New from Terrence Malick

The Tree of Life Trailer 2011 HD

Saw this tonight and I loved it. I see why some people hated it (actually, some have booed, walked out, demanded refunds, etc...) but I loved it. In fact, it may be one of the best "films" I have ever seen. But, it's definently not for everyone and I'm not remotely close to being a film snob.

I believe the boos and walkouts came at this year's Cannes, but this is not uncommon regarding the fest. Malick is a treasure; too bad he isn't more prolific.

There's some pretty good hate and gnashing of the teeth over on the IMDb message board for this one:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478304/board/

Who cares? imdb is hardly legit regarding responsible reviews. Anyone with a computer and half a brain (or less) can write whatever they want without worrying about the consequences or backing up their statements. We don't even know if these fools have watched the film in the first place. This is an example of why bloggers shouldn't replace real jounalism, which, sadly, is occuring more and more frequently (some bloggers are legit mind you). Now, if reviewers around the world hated the film on Rotten Tomatoes, then I'd pay attention.

My point being, this is a divisive movie from a "non-critics" POV. Most of time on RT, movies high on the Tomatometer are pretty close to audience reations (Bridesmaids: 90-84/ Super 8: 82-80/ Incendies: 92-92). However, movies low on the Tomatometer don't necessarily pan out that way with audiences. Like the latest Pirates of the Caribbean:  33-66 or Green Lantern: 26-57.

Tree of Life is an anamoly b/c it got the high rating on the Tomatometer- 86 and audiences didn't give it such a great rating- 66.  That is fascinating to me, mainly b/c I loved the movie.

Be the cliché you want to see in the world.

Mallick isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Hey, nice that you mention a great Canuck film, Incendies! Denis Villeneuve is a director to watch for sure. I wonder if he'll ever make an English-language film? Check out his chilling Polytechnique, about the 1989 Montreal massacre of 14 women at an all-female college by a feminist-hater. I remember the day well.

Adjustment Bureau--great fun movie though some may not appreciate the backstory of the "adjusters"

Tron Legacy--as awful as I had imagined it
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

I haven't been to a movie theater since my children were born (slight exaggeration), but if I could, I'd consider these choices:

Bad Teacher - read a good review; a one-joke film, but does it well
Super 8 - sounds like the collaboration of JJ Abrams and Steven Speilberg turned out like a collaboration between JJ Abrams and Steven Speilberg
The Hangover Part 2 - Zach Galifinakas is a MMJ fan, 'nuff said!
Bridesmaids - chick flick meets Apatow raunch

Please note I have not seen any of these.  I live vicariously through the media, as I was once quite the movie house addict.  And, I tried to avoid the kids' matinee as well as the art house.  Have fun and report back.

Wow.  Ok, thanks for the feedback guys, will definitely consider Bridesmaids!

We were also looking at one of the more indy-ish film houses up in Montclair, and they had "beginners," "the trip," and the NY times documentary.  Has anyone seen any of these?  I trust you all as being discriminating purveyors of entertainment, so I trust .

I have not, but I am dying to see "The Trip"...I love both of those guys and it looks hilarious. I would go with that one. Or "Win Win" if it's still playing anywhere.

Sticky Icky Green Stuff

haven't seen bridesmaids.  super 8 was pretty cool, sorta typical sci fi but it had decent character development I suppose.  hangover 2 is worth waiting for video I'd say, fuck that bad teacher movie, wtf yac?

Sticky Icky Green Stuff

insidious - not that sweet of a pay off, tho it had potential it fell flat in the end.

Sticky Icky Green Stuff

sucker punch - this movie is a complete piece of shit.

WSS2

Good movie (TV):  The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Medium movie (TV): Unknown
Bad movie (TV): Swamp Shark

Sadly Swamp Shark fell short of both Sharktopus and Dinocroc vs. Supergator

Did you read what I posted?  Have you seen it?  And as a teacher, I wouldn't mind Cameron Diaz hanging in the teachers' lounge.

I'm way way late but I finally got around to seeing Scott Pilgrim. This may be the greatest thing ever made. I'm blown away.

The Indian guy with eyeliner ruined that movie for me, but it had some innovative stuff in it and I liked the music.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

I really liked Super 8. Everyone I know at least enjoyed it. Only complaints are from people with high expectations (but they still thought it was good), so u should be good on it exploding your mind
