All too tidy of an ending. It felt like the studio and executive producers got their hands on it. Still, it'll give most people what they want. I thought the portrayal of mental illness was bang-on.

It was, but the thought of him getting back with his wife/ex wife considering the circumstances and not even wanting to speak with him let alone be in his presence just made no sense. The whole bet and stuff was unnecessary, but I wouldve been angry if Lawrence/Cooper didnt end up together as they were perfect for each other.

Yes, I agree with all of that. It's the bet that feels contrived, and it is. The rest of it makes perfect sense.

I liked the bet. I loved how they were so excited that they got a 5 out of 10. Hooray for average!

Lebanon.  Really wanted to like this flick as I had heard good things when I picked up a couple of years back.  The camera work and concept is different so there was that but in my opinon the actions of the tank crew seem to not be way different than what you would expect of trained army personnel in a war.  Their indecisivness was mindnumbing and caused lots of issues.  The overall movie wasn't horrible, but their perception of what a war time scenario would intell really bothered me.

Knuckleball! - Thought this was a really well done documentary if you like baseball its definately worth the watch.

The Guard - Have seen this before when it came out in theaters, still a fantastic movie IMO.  Was probably the best movie I saw the year it came out as there are very few comedys that are similar to this and that is a shame.  Gleeson, Cheadle, and Cunningham all put on great performances and had interesting characters that really helped the movie.  Highly reccommended.

Pacific Rim. Great movie. Awesome special effects. I'm a total geek so when I got wind of a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters I rushed to the theater and it didn't disappoint. It's not a deep movie but it is a Guillermo Del Toro movie so it's got great cheesy humor, decent acting, and mind-blowing visuals. Fun stuff.

Dead Man Down

I was expecting an action/mystery, but there wasnt too much mystery here, or action for that matter, but I enjoyed it. The Colin Farrell/Noomi Rapace storyline and interactions were great, and that alongside solid direction from Oplev (who directed the original GwtDTattoo film) and the feel he gave it elevated this to above average. Farrell and Rapace are quite good in their respective roles and the biggest reason this is worth seeing. Early on you think youre in line for a lot of action, and there is some action again before the end but in reality this is a solid and compelling character drama with guns involved periodically.

The Conjuring: Entertaining old school ghost/possession story. Good acting with nice use o some tried and true frights. It's not overly original and isn't as good as the other recent low-budget horror hits, Mama and The Woman in Black, but it's well worth checking out.

The Conspiracy

Decent flick, shot as a psuedo-documentary, so that was interesting.  Not really anything great but interesting concept and decent plot line that at least makes you question the ending of the film.

The Place Beyond The Pines

I can understand the complaints Ive read from reviews of this, and its usually the same few things because so much of this film was excellent, but I personally disagree with the complaints Ive seen most frequently. One of which is many disliking the last act of Pines. While I would agree its not as riveting as the first 2 acts, with how the storyline and the path of the main characters went, as well as the jump in time, I thought the final act fulfilled its purpose masterfully. Without it, the major themes of the first two acts - namely family relationships & the consequences our decisions/actions have on them - would never have been fully realized. The last act to me is what takes this film to the next level and made it great. Another common complaint is that its too long, but if Pines is only 90-100 minutes, it is instead just a well made character drama that ultimately falls short with its screenplay. Each act was about 45 minutes, and all of them took some time to really heat up. The last act was no different, and with a focus on newly introduced characters, naturally it took some time to build. While it is 2 hours15min, I didnt think there were wasted scenes here and I have a hard time understanding those who think this film wouldve been better if it was considerably shorter. Last but not least, the length of it also didnt bother me because this was carried by a strong ensemble cast. Gosling and Cooper will get a lot of credit and rightly so, but Dane DeHaan (Gosling's son) and Ben Mendelsohn really stood out in smaller roles, IMO. Derek Cianfrance is an up and coming director to keep an eye on. This will certainly end up being one of my favorites of 2013.

The Act of Killing

A really well done documentary about one of the worst attrocities of modern times.  Very interesting portrayal of this crazy episode and you see a point of view that only people that lived during that time could have.  It almost seems like the country in general has a twisted view of the world that most people in our society can't understand.  Would reccommend as long as you can handle serious subject matter.

Is it just me, or are other people finding that the experience of seeing movies in the theater is getting worse and worse?

I feel like if I go to a movie these days it is a miracle if there are not any disrupting/distracting things going on (people talking, people using cell phones, people excessively milling around, etc.).

I really like the experience of seeing a movie on a big screen, but that's starting to get overshadowed by how often the crowd in movies ends up being a distraction.

I don't remember it being this way in the in the past.  Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this.

I dont go see movies in the theater all that often, but Ive never had this problem. Ive seen plenty of people complain about the same things you are though. I think part of it depends on when you see the movie (friday/weekend? matinee?), the target demographic, and if youre going opening weekend or something when the theater is more full. I try to stay away from those situations.

I used to be bothered by this all of the time, but now I tend to watch a lot of indy films which attract a totally different crowd.  Plus I tend to go around 10 or so on Sunday mornings for matinees and usually you never have a large crowd at that time.

Yeah, I almost never go when theres going to be a big crowd, because that I think is where most of these complaints stem from. More people in the theater, more likelihood youll find people you dont want to deal with.

I think the last movie I had with a big crowd was Inception on opening night, and everyone was psyched to see it so cell phones and talking and such werent a problem. Plus I think if you sent a text during that movie you wouldve lost track of whats going on.

The Long Goodbye. I'm a pretty big Raymond Chandler fan, loved the book, but had never seen the movie. It's awesome, and available to stream on Netflix. Ah-nold has a small part in it, must be one of his first movie roles! He plays a gangster's goon!  It's a time-capsule of LA in the 70s, great locations, and of course a great story, though quite different from the book. I thought Elliott Gould was great as Marlowe.

I hardly ever watch movies but the last few i can remember

V/H/S - holy shit one of the creepiest horror movies Ive ever seen.
Life of Pi - Holds up to the book well.

The House I Live In - WOW. Probably THE BEST documentary I've ever seen. It very powerfully highlights one of the most pressing political problems in our country- The War on Drugs. It focuses on TWOD as it effects us in the U.S., and hardly mentions cartels and all that. Its just wonderful. The maker of it was one of the writers and directors of the Freakanomics documentary. One of the people interviewed in the doc is the creator of the Wire, who's a genius of a human. This is a must watch for ANYONE. Highly educational and moving.

The World's End.  Great and funny movie.  Better than Hot Fuzz, almost as good as Shaun Of The Dead.  Def. see it if you like their other two movies.
