I saw CBGB a couple of nights ago. I really enjoyed it. Comes to theaters Oct. 17, but it available on demand on DirecTV now. Mostly great depiction of the birth of American punk with reenactments of Talking Heads, Dead Boys (with Rupert Grint- Ron Weasley- as a fucked up Cheetah Chrome), Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop (FF's Taylor Hawkins), Blondie (Malin Ackerman as Debbie Harry- meh), and The Police. Alan Rickman as Hilly Kristal. Great music, using mostly studio tracks. We owe Kristal so much for music he curated.

I hear good things about this flick.
BTW, you have a big typo in your first sentence. I believe you mean: CBGB.

I really want to see this too. I wanna see Taylor Hawkins as Iggy Pop.

I saw Prisoners last night and all I can say is Holy. Fucking. Shit.  It's one of the heaviest, most tense movies I've seen in a very long time, maybe ever.  Hugh Jackman and Jake Gylenhall are excellent.  10/10

Can't wait to see this too. The movie caused a sensation earlier this month at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). Keep an eye on the film's director, Denis Villeneuve. He's fucking brilliant. This is both his first Hollywood and English language film. He's already been nominated for an Oscar in 2010 for Incendies and had another big English-language movie premiering at TIFF this summer, also starring Jake Gyllenhaal, called Enemy. It hasn't been released yet, but the reviews are even better than Prisoners!

Trailers look really good.

I saw Gravity in 3D at the Imax.
visually, the film was beautiful.  It was the best looking film since last year's Life of Pi.
The story is a basic survival story, however it is decidedly un-basic as it takes place in space and is depicted with (what I can only assume is) such detailed realism.
Sandra Bullock is pretty spectacular.
Whether you end up liking the movie or not, I think this is one of those movies that you just have to go see on the big screen in the theater.

Had to share an alternate viewpoint on this film, from someone who was part of the scene.  Check out the comments following the review, from other real-life characters in the story of CBGB and the birth of American punk (and the top comment re: MMJ).  Not knowing details, I enjoyed the film for what it was.  Anyone expecting accuracy in any Hollywood bio-pic is gonna be disappointed.

yep that was the last movie i saw as well, also in IMAX 3D.  Visually outstanding.  Sandra Bullock might win an Oscar.

Also saw Rush which was also good.

Gravity in 3D, catch in the theaters while you can! Might have to go to a different theater and try to see it again in Imax. Never was a huge Bullock fan, but she's good in this.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

add me to the parade of people cheering Gravity 3D.  What an experience.
Don't you ever turn it off

Iconic director David Cronenberg (The Fly, Scanners, Videodrome, Dead Ringers, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, etc.) is hanging around my workplace right now. COOL!

The Hobbit- The Desolation of Smaug. They changed it heaps from the book but I still liked it none the less. I didn't mind Tauriel as much as I thought I would, and I loved all the parts with Gandalf in Dol Guldur.

Saw American Hustle last night. Great - and sometimes very funny - film, great cast, great script and direction. Only one gripe, and it's minor, is that Jennifer Lawrence's character said "pissed" twice; the film is set in 1978 and I'm pretty positive that word wasn't around until the mid to late 80s.

I didn't mind the ending, I just didn't think that was where the movie would end. I thought it would be just as they got into the mountain. Or at least not so close the end of the book. Can't wait for the third one though.

I looked this up, and it looks like it may have come a little bit earlier. It probably wasn't in wide use like it is now though. I do remember that "piss" was one of George Carlin's original "Seven words you can never say on television" back in the early 1970's.

Here is what I found on Online Etymology Dictionary:

I should have said "pissed off" (Lawrence said it twice). I'm a child of the (late) 60s and never heard the phrase in 1978, and I think I started to "officially" cuss around then (no doubt wearing bell-bottoms with Cougar winter boots).

Looks like "pissed off" originated during WWII. It's okay, I thought I made up the word "boobies" when I was a kid.

I saw the hobbit yesterday w/ my son.   Was mildly disappointed but still a good movie.   My expectations were raised based on a bunch of reviews I'd seen stating it was much better than the first.

I recognize the challenge of balancing the purists vs the action movie crowd.   To me, it was too much action packed.   Like watching Indiana Jones on steroids.   I'm not a traditionalist getting worked up about things like invented characters or plot changes, but it just felt like it was too designed for a video game tie-in.

The 3d IMAX was amazing.

The dragon was amazing, especially at the beginning while under gold.

The river barrel fight seen was creative and inventive.

Inside Llewyn Davis - Somewhat disappointing for A Coen Bros. film, as they're my favorite film makers. Still had some good moments though.

Her - Smart film that's a satirical look on the not-so-distant future, and how computers and technology have affected society and how we build relationships and interact with each other.

Lone Survivor, pretty good.  Lot of cringe worthy scenes.
