He RARELY tours.

Usually only plays Austin or Paris.

And he is coming near me!  I'm so excited!  I've already got my tickets.  I've seriously considered travelling to Austin for the sole purpose of seeing him and now this!  Wow!

While we're on the topic of DJ.  Does anyone have Pearl Jam's cover of Walking the Cow or Wilco's version of True Love Will Find You in the End?

I suddenly feel a LOT better!

What is Wilco's version of that on?

Beck's version is awesome.

I've been meaning to watch The Devil & Daniel Johnston.  I've only heard a few of his songs and read a bit about him on Wikipedia.

Beck's version IS great.  I don't think Wilco's version is on a proper release.  I believe they've only played it live.

yeah, here's a list of all the times they played it.  Anyone have any of these?:

this was a great show and an amazing performance.  I say that subjectively, you would have to be a fan of Daniel's to enjoy the show but everyone there seemed to be a fan.  The crowd was silent as Daniel tried his best to make it through the performance.  Obviously heavily medicated he barely had what it took to strum his way through two acoustic songs.  Then he put the guitar down and sang a few songs accompanied by a band that he put together just for that night.  They sounded good considering it was probably the first time they played together.  Songs included True Love Will Find You in the End, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Life in Vain, Speeding Motorcycle, Tell Me Now, and Living Life.

Where should I start with Daniel?  I've watched a few videos on YouTube and am going to watch the documentary this week, but I'm more than ready for an album.  Captivating.

i would start with Discovered/Covered: the Late Great Daniel Johnston.  It's a 2 disc comp.  the first disc is Daniel, the second is other people covering Daniel including m ward, tom waits, flaming lips, and the eels.

also he has a great fan site that has free mp3s, some of his art work, and a lot of other shit.  Here's the link:

(if you go to the bottom of the screen and click the word "bottom" it will take you to the members only section with a ton more free mp3s and other cool shit)

Thanks so much for this aMD  :)

EDIT: Discovered/Covered seems to be currently out of print  :(
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Dee.

I recently saw Daniel at the Mod Club in Toronto and loved it so much my heart nearly exploded. Here is a brief little video of Casper the Friendly Ghost and pics.

holy shit, Deanna!!! That's awesome!  I don't know if I would have noticed that on my own or not but either way, you are awesome.  Thanks for the video and pics.

Rant: I think it's so cool that other people are into Daniel.  Being in the same room with so many people who appreciated this music affirmed to me that if you make great music and are true to yourself you WILL have an audience and be successful, damn the haters.  (I often have similiar moments at jacket shows but it's been a while since i've seen them).

Dee.

Yeah, I really enjoyed. I'd see him again in a heartbeat. I was just so happy to get the chance to see him because I never imagined I would. I, like you, thought I'd have to travel farther to see him. I hope he's having a nice time touring. The day after the show he mentioned that he'd be on MTV Canada. I found a bill for that show:

I suppose they play the performances on tv? That's cool. Too bad I couldn't stick around Toronto long enough to see it.

EC

DEANNA YOU WERE IN TORONTO???????

Dee.

Briefly, yes. :) For the Over the Top festival, mostly. You have a fine city. I really had a good time. I hope to go back sometime soon.

EC

it's a great festival.
i hope you tell me next time.  :)
i probably passed you at the mod club - it's about 6 minutes from my home.
glad you had fun.  i like it here. :)
daniel johnston played hamilton the night before i played, and apparently tuckered everyone out. ;)

Dee.

Aw snap, you had to follow Daniel! He rocked them to pieces, you had to put them back together. :)

I'll definitely tell you next time. This was a bit on the fly. But dang, Toronto is nice. As I walked down the streets, I was thinking, 'I'd live here... and here... or maybe this house..' hehe. Also, I enjoyed the public transportation. Such a relief from driving myself to every single place I go.

*a high five*
