In Absentia is a classic from 2003, 2007's Fear of a Blank Planet was grammy-nominated and the most recent album, The Incident, is also great.  A good taster would be the download of Atlanta from their online shop - a 2-hour gig with all the good ones!

Can't pick just one, but older Genesis is my favorite prog band, and this one ranks right up there for me. Especially with Hackett on guitar.

Well any album will do ;). Think best place to start might be "In Absentia". This is a good mix of the "older" Porcupine Tree and the "newer" (somewhat heavier) I think. I would not start with "The Incident", it's not their best imo (although it's still very good).

If you like their softer side more, you might want to go to "Stupid Dream" or "Lightbulb Sun" after "In Absentia". If you like the heavier side, you could go to "Deadwing" or "Fear of a Blank Planet" after "In Absentia". But as I said, you can't go wrong with any of the albums ;).

Also, go see them live if you have the chance, it's just perfect :)

I listen to quite some progrock, but only to the "newer" bands like Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Tool etc... I never really got into the older progrock (except Pink Floyd), might give it more chances...

A band I really love is the Norwegian band Gazpacho. I think they can become pretty big, but they're not signed to a major label. Their last 3 albums are really great! They sound like Porcupine Tree with the singer from Muse or something. If you like Porcupine Tree, I think you like these guys. I'm seeing them live for the first time in March :D.

Alright, thanks to Sidus (and mjk and db), I downloaded Crippled Black Phoenix's I, Vigilante last week.  Aside from the unbearable (futuristic sounds at the beginning of tracks 1 and 4), they had me mesmerized after two full listens.  I can definitely see the influences of the different components but the variance in the songs, particularly the last 2, were never a turn off.

I spent this weekend in a number of record shops in Philly searching for a copy of (Mankind) The Crafty Ape.  I guess I'll have to Amazon it.  Great stuff!

Ha!  I've talked about them ad nauseum in the Metal thread.  I'd loosely call them instrumental prog metal.  They do seem to have overrarching themes but it's their complex rhythmic structures that give them their progginess.   I mean, there is a jazz quality to their music as well

Old thread, but I've been listening to a ton of prog recently! Up until now my only exposure had been Pink Floyd if they count. Some of the 70s bands I've been enjoying are Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, Nektar, Camel, Caravan, etc.

That led me down the road of what I guess is prog metal with groups like Porcupine Tree, Oceansize, Riverside, Beardfish, Scale the Summit, Ayreon, Transatlantic.
