An article in Mojo Magazine indicates that the White Stripes 6th studio album will be called "Icky Thump". Here is an excerpt from the magazine:

"The album will be called Icky Thump, a title drawn from a Lancastrian colloquialism beloved of White's Mancunian wife Karen Elson ("I changed it to "Icky" because that's how it sounds when I say it, and I love the weird imagery it suggests," he explains). White describes the album as "really heavy. There's a couple of one-take numbers in there, people who love our first album will dig those songs. But there's also some of the most complicated stuff we've ever done. Of course, complicated for the White Stripes means three instruments playing at once."

The article goes on to state a couple of song titles, "Turning Into You" and "Icky Thump" - which would be their 1st ever title track.

Let the buzz begin!!!

I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Can't wait for this one.  I've been on such a White Stripes kick the last month or so.  They bring the ROCK!

ali

does this ring bells for anyone else? db??

;D ;D
love a song for the way it makes you feel

dragonboy

No idea what that is Ali, do tell! Looks like The Goodies?!!

Jack White sure is a hard working man!

How about you change the subject title of this one BH before we get 7 'new White Stripes album' threads in the coming weeks  ;)
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I'm certainly intrigued.  Loving the album title.

Ah, the ancient art of Ecky Thump!
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

dragonboy

Woah! Who's that sporting the 6...no wait 8 pack in your new pic Mark?
I'm pretty sure I'd have abs like that if I didn't like the other kind of six-pack so much  ;)

i bet half this album will be excellent, and the other half will be terrible, unless it's like GET BEHIND ME SATAN which was all terrible.

:-/

attack me if you wish.  i really do like the stripes overall, but i have an extreme love / hate relationships with their songs.  either i think they're fucking tops, or just the opposite.  i'm not sure if there's any other band / artist out there whose material is so polarising with me??

I can see how then can do that. I have several friends that just hate them, yet love bands that are similiar. I hated Get Behind Me. Probably hated it so much because I loved the first 4 so much. Such a sharp contrast from striped down guitar brillance.

Out of curiosity, examples of songs that you hate and what about them that you hate. just curious

ratsprayer

i pretty much dislike all the twee songs.  i'll take the rockers any day.

It's Tony Jaa, db.  Thai film star who starred in Ong Bak and The Warrior King (both got a wide general release - Ong Bak is well worth a look if you like martial arts films), well known for not using wires or CGI in his stunts.  He is unbelievable to watch.

Obviously my own mid section is modelled on Tony's.  My stomach is just more well-developed in size terms and less so in muscle terms.

Just in case the relevance police are watching, and to keep the thread on-message, I agree with Ratsprayer.  The White Stripes are best when they're flat-out rocking.  I fear for any album with such a contrived title...

Do you think Karen Elson has done a 'Yoko'?

My eyes!  That picture should have a public health warning - soooo ginger.

I hope she hasn't done a Yoko on Jack.  That would be a real shame.  I have to admit, though, that now I've started listening to the Black Keys (thanks to this board) I tend to get my raw guitar/drums fix from them rather than the Stripes nowadays.

I personally find The Keys to be patchier than The Stripes.
Big Come Up was OK, Thickfreakness was excellent, Rubber Factory has a couple of great tracks but the rest is very average IMO, still can't get into Magic Potion.
Granted, Get Behind Me Satan was very patchy but De Stijl, White Blood Cells & Elephant are all excellent.

It's an easy comparison to compare The White Stripes with The Black Keys. I think The Black Keys still remain rooted in the blues whereas Jack and Meg have evolved past Detroit garage rock without abandoning a blues and country folk influence. A better comparison with The Keys are The Soledad Brothers - if comparing drum/guitar blues duos is the essence of this argument. Anyway, none of the above bands invented the stripped-down drum/guitar approach. The old blues guys experimented with that set-up in the 30's and 40's. Check out some of Muddy Waters' Chess stuff for proof (amongst others).

As for Get Behind Me Satan, there's no doubt this album polarized fans. I think it had some decent highs and was at worst, overly ambitious. I think Jack needed to produce an album like Satan since the band at the time was at a crossroads. Most great bands have that one album where things get shuffled creatively. I like the deprecating folk of As Ugly As I Seem, the fun bluegrass of Little Ghost and the spooky blues of Red Rain. But the lead single was by far their weakest as their lead-off singles go - hearing critics describe Blue Orchid as a cross between disco beats and garage rock made my skin crawl, as does the song. However, one of The White Stripes' heaviest songs is on Satan, the Zeppelin-fueled Instinct Blues. That song proved to me once again that the most resonating and powerful type of music The White Stripes produce is heavy blues.

Any love for the Flat Duo Jets?
A good friend of mine introduced me to them a few years ago.

I have never heard of them. I'll check them out. Any love for The Immortal Lee County Killers? They are punishing, but surprisingly musical.

dragonboy

Heard the name but not the music, I'll check them out.

Look out for Dexter Romweber's (Flat Duo Jets) bluegrass cover of The Seeker:

Thanks.

I forewarn you, the "real" Killers are hardcore blues - meaning, hardcore punk meets delta blues. Punishing is putting it lightly.
