In Aeroplanes Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel

Great album, but I wouldn't consider it overlooked. It's like the indie rock bible for a lot of people.

Agreed

Im pretty sure that album has been jizzed on more than Tara Reid, and Im not even an indie guy and know of this fact.

I get your point, it's huge in the indie scene, but I still think it's underappreciated in a larger sense. The album sounds more like folk than indie rock to me so I think a lot more people should hear this album, not just the indie kids.

Im not an indie kid, and I like this album a good bit. MMJ is probably the most indie band I listen to, and I wouldnt call them indie.

Although the only reason Im familiar with the album is friends from college who were big in the indie stuff

This album qualifies on all accounts:

Not quite as exciting as their monumental Marquee Moon, but Adventure is really excellent. It also contains a number of Television's best guitar songs like "Foxhole",  "Ain't That Nothin'" and the haunting "The Dream's Dream".

My favorite Floyd album. ;)

I knew I liked you.   ;)

Well, that and animals.

I second those emotions.

Should be praised as much as, if not more than, that first Arcade Fire record.  Next to You Fogot It In People, it's my favourite Canadian album of the decade.

Not from the same record, but I can't pass up a chance to post it.  Blows me away every time.

The Go - Whatcha Doin'

jack white's only album with'em. this band is pretty much rock n' roll at it's finest. every one of their records is under appreciated/overlooked, not just the one with jack white. i often wonder why they are not bigger. maybe it's the fact that they never tour, and i'm still big on the detroit rock scene.

just my opinion

QuoteThis one will only make sense to a few here (DB, Mark, pennylane). I'm almost leaning towards this is a better album then their debut. At least musically..

:D 8-)
Great album!
I'm not trying to be mysterious about it, it's just that what I do is tough to explain.

God there are just too many to mention.
For me the most underappreciated band of all time was Blind Melon and one of the most underappreciated albums EVER is "Soup".  This record... start to finish... is perfect.  I never, ever get tired of it.

I think some major overlooked albums, to me, to start with are Neil Young's "Mirror Ball"... a band called Brad's (Stone Gossard's side band with the MIGHTY Shawn Smith) first album "Shame"... too many to mention!

Jaimoe

Mirror Ball may be overlooked now, but it certainly made lots of noise when it came out.

Agreed.  But I think Nico is their best and underappreciated even amongst Blind Melon fans.

by most? really? so you think if you stopped 10 random people on the street that more than 5 of them would say that it's a great album.  I think you'd be lucky to find 2 people out of ten that have ever even heard about it.  If you mean by most people you know I'm going to assume you hang out with indie kids (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Maybe I should make myself clearer still: Aeroplanes Over the Sea is underappreciated by mainstream standards.  When compared to  the Jonas Brothers, it is underappreciated.  In my book this album should have won Grammy's and gone quadruple platinum with singles shooting up the Billboard charts, but that didn't happen.  So in my opinion it is underappreciated.  Paula Cole won the Grammy for Best New Artist the year this album came out, so next to Paula Cole it is underrated.  Anybody have a problem with that?

Youre reasoning is a little skewed  ;D

If you ask 10 random people on the street if they know who Lil Wayne is, whose sold millions and millions of albums, I bet more often than not less than 4 people will say yes. And that might be high.

I think the point myself and about a handful of other people here who dont think this album is underrated, is because most anyone under 40, who listens to music or genres similar to NMH, has heard of this album and appreciates it.

Just because everyone and their grandmother hasnt heard this album doesnt mean its underrated. If some guy who jerks off to Mozart concertos has never heard of this album, it doesnt mean its underrated. People who dont listen to music like NMH are a moot point in an underrated discussion.

FWIW, I recently did an "Acoustic Song Draft" with 16 other people, and 3 NMH songs were picked, including 2 in the first 45 picks - and this was on a fantasy football message board.

The Dillards- Tired to do "bluegrass-rock" the same time as Gram Parsons and the others in California were doing "country-rock". These 3 albums they did are fantastic and ahead of their time.

I will say I love the Nico album... I mean I love everything they have done really... but to me SOUP is their masterpiece.  Start to finish it is just a perfect album.

Yes Soup Perfect Start To Finish.  In my top 5 every time.

Nico has great songs, but you can tell it is more of a hodge podge.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.
