Bumbeli

So, after some things didn't turn out the way I wanted them to, I need some help to bury feelings deep down inside, which means I'm going to buy loads of CD's and books. Now I've got a list of candidates and I'd apprecciate if someone could help me out and tell me which albums would be best for starters.

Joy Division
Alice in Chains
Soundgarden
Wilco
The Who
Yo la tengo
Neko Case
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
The Decemberists
Grateful Dead
Queen
The Who
Morrissey (gonna start with the smiths here)

These are the ones I'm probably going to get, but there are 2 other possibilities.

the record of Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
mb a Cat Power record

I'd also like to hear some of some artists I've not mentioned, preferably with a record.

The Who
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Queen
For these bands I'd start with:
Badmotorfinger
Quadrophenia/Sellout
Damn The Torpedoes/ Hard Promises
Night At The Opera
How loud can silence get?

for the bands i'm into on that list.

Joy Division-Closer
Alice in Chains-Unplugged
Wilco-Being there, YHF, and the live one in Chicago
The Who-Live At Leeds
Neko Case-Live at Austin
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers-Wildflowers, Southern Accent, but you can't really go wrong with any of them.
Grateful Dead-American Beauty, Workingman's Dead and anything live from 72', 77-78' or late 60's.

first of all, I wouldn't try to "bury your feelings deep down inside"; that never works b/c they will always be down there. Feelings are not banana peels and won't eventually just "go away", IMO. They need to come out and leave your body. Find someone in your neck of the woods who can help you do that; most of the time all you need is a friend that will listen. It's been my experience that you can only "bury" so much shit before it starts to overflow or smell really bad.

The Who - Quadrophenia (speaking of not burying your feelings, this is Townsend purging at his best)

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Full Moon Fever

Yo La Tengo - Painful

WILCO - Summerteeth

Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood

and if you want to get down in it, I recommend these two also

Sugar - Copper Blue

Peter Gabriel - Us

Crispy

Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts
Grateful Dead - Two From The Vault (you must a live record if you get anything)

All the others were answered appropriately, and I would second the Quadrophenia and Summer Teeth selections, although I'd say Fox Confessor for Neko, because that's her best studio record, and maybe best for bumbeli's feelings-burying purposes. And I agree with Tracy's advice to purge rather than bury.

Although I love Quadrophenia, it's not a first buy. I'd say Who's Next and bookend it with Live at Leeds. Then move on to Quadrophenia and Tommy. Although, if you like their mod sound, get any and all of the early albums.

Gotta go with the DELUXE EDITION of "Live at Leeds"... the live Tommy on this is just out of control!!!
Also go with the deluxe of "Who's Next" for the live disc as well.

Soundgarden - Superunknown was a hit for a reason, but I agree with whoever else said Badmotorfinger. It has much better flow and Drawing Flies
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot only because out of all their albums, this is their most condensed collection of amazing songs that are instantly gonna hook you. Summerteeth is for when you've accepted the fact that Wilco is awesome and you want to see them really open it up.
Yo la tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. Sugarcube and Center of Gravity  are guaranteed to give you a moment of syncronicity at some point. Or, if you're not snobby, get Prisoners of Love and get the band's version of a Greatest Hits album.
The Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts if only for the mood. It's made for a cold rainy day.

I'd also like to hear some of some artists I've not mentioned, preferably with a record.

Other artists you may want to check out could include Fred Neil - Everbody's Talkin (yes, THAT song everyone covers) if you wanna take it old school, the Tragically Hip - Live Between Us, or Dismemberment Plan - Change (most accessible). I am assuming your mood is somber and/or annoyed.

Also, MMJ

Wilco - Summerteeth, or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Neko Case - Blacklisted (trust me, don't listen to anyone else), Fox Confessor is also very good
Grateful Dead - American Beauty

That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

Yo la tengo

JD- Go for both albums Unknown Pleasure and Closer. Both are great
AIC- Dirt
Soundgarden- Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are essential. Louder then Love is great too
Yo La Tengo- Electr-O-Pura, I'm Not Afraid Of You and Will Beat Your Ass
Neko- EVERYTHING. Start with Blacklisted, then go with Fox Confessor, Furnace Room Lullabye, The Tigers Have Spoken (live album), Canadian Amp. Be sure to pick up the new one on 3/3. It's fantastic. Also, check out her DVD of her set from ACl a few years go.

Alice in Chains: Dirt. Easiest answer of any of these, although Unplugged wouldnt be a bad place to start either.

Soundgarden: Superunknown

Wilco: Summerteeth. Out of any of the other recommendations, I'd take this 1 to the bank 1st. Bridged the sound of their early and later albums to some perfect medium. I also think its their best album as well.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Wildflowers or Damn the Torpedoes

Grateful Dead: The easy answers here are American Beauty and Workingman's Dead, and while good albums, theyve never been my favorite. I always seem to come back to Aoxomoxoa, Wake of the Flood, and Terrapin Station whenever Im looking to listen to a Dead album. IMO Wake of teh Flood is their most underrated

"Wildflowers" isn't *technically* a Heartbreakers album. It's a Tom Petty record that most (if not all) of the Heartbreakers ended up playing on, but it's a Petty solo record.
I learned that from the documentary that came out a few years ago. I hadn't realized that before.  :)

I have no idea why I felt the need to point that out.

Not sure if I realized that, but I think what Bumbeli was going for was just any Petty, Im assuming, because lets be honest - does it really matter if the Heartbreakers are there?? Its kind of like Neil Young and Crazy Horse, I could care less if theyre their or not if Im just picking a NY album.

Now that I think about it, Wildflowers might not be the best place to start. That said, in some band's case though (and I think Petty fits this category), most people are familiar enough with his music and sound that it isnt necessarily best to start with his most "Petty" album as opposed to his best album, which IMO is probably Wildflowers, though he's got a handful that are all just about equally good.

Thank you for all those advices, I've got a lot of music to go through in the next days and I'm really looking forward.
And I thought about not burying those feelings, but then I figured I'd stay with what I already know and can do, so here I am, again.
