Hey Meg,your choices of country music legends are way cool! I also like Dwight Yoakam alot since he is keeping the spirit of traditional country music alive and kicking. Also I'll mention again about local Louisville artist Johnny Berry and The Outliers. www.johnnyberrymusic.com. Another artist who is trying to keep good ole honky tonk music alive. Give a listen to the song "Every Time I Turn Around".It is pure country .Also he gets to open for Dwight here in Louisville on Nov 18.

Junior Brown is an amazing guitar player and always put a fabulous show. He calls his creation a "Guitsteel".

I love Stompin' Tom.

Riny, it's hard to find her old albums on cd, the way they were released.  If you can find Fist City, that's a good one.  But mostly, it's collections of "greatest hits" and stuff.  I would look for a collection of her and Ernest Tubb, and if there's a collection anywhere that has her singing her own sons, I would go with that.  (The 20th Century Masters is pretty good - I have that, and I like it okay.)

I forgot to mention the man that helped start it all: Jimmy Rogers.

The Carter Family needs some serious props too!

I quite agree! Anyone unsure of Dwight's talent needs to buy dwightyoakamacoustic.net right away.
It's like a greatest hits Album but re-recorded with just him & his guitar & the songs are just fantastic!

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Any Michael Nesmith fans?

Something of a cult legend for me & certainly very famous due to his time in the Monkees.

I bought a Monkees box set a few years back & was very surprised & impressed by Mike's country solo stuff from the 70's.
Amazon.co.uk has a couple of 2for1 CDs:
Magnetic South/Loose Salute & And the Hits Just Keep on Comin'/Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash are both excellent.
Listen to tracks like Nine Times Blue, Calico Girlfriend, Listen To The Band, Some Of Shelly's Blues & If I Ever Get To Saginaw Again & thank me later!

Alright folks, I need some country guidance.

I only own the following 3 country albums:
Willie Nelson - Stardust
Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger
Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose

What other stone-cold classics should I add to my wish-list?

dragonboy

Can I go again?  ;)

You need some Johnny Cash - both of his prison recordings are essential:

Merle Haggard (these 2 for 1s are excellent value):

Waylon Jennings (look for the studio albums as 2 for 1s & 3 for 2s):

Kris Kristofferson:

Those should keep you busy for a while...

The dvd "Be here to love me" is really what got me into Van Zandt.  Give it a shot, you will enjoy.

I'm so jealous!!! I was lucky enough to see Billy Joe Shaver in a tiny little club in London a few years ago. One of the best shows I've ever seen, the music was amazing & Billy Joe made everyone laugh between songs with his stories. Hope you have a good time EC, let us know when you get back.
