For me it doesn't get any better than GP

I know it's "country rock" or "cosmic american music" or whatever, but God damn does it feel like country to me!
We could.

QuoteI'm seeing Billie Joe Shaver tonight!
I'm so jealous!!! I was lucky enough to see Billy Joe Shaver in a tiny little club in London a few years ago. One of the best shows I've ever seen, the music was amazing & Billy Joe made everyone laugh between songs with his stories. Hope you have a good time EC, let us know when you get back.
Well it was pretty special.  He's a big flirt, but I will say that the man gives a genuine and heartfelt hug.  And as he was instructing us that it's not usually a good idea to do heroin - maybe once or twice to try it, but don't go over the edge (!!!), I was thinking about his life, or at least what I know of it.  Talk about some tragedy.  I think somebody took a picture so if I ever see it, I'll post.  He's pretty funny.  Romi Meyes opened for him, and she's quite lovely (another Canadian, she's from Winnipeg, pretty much full on country).  There aren't so many guys like BJS anymore, maybe.  And the man can dance.

dragonboy

Yeah he definitely ran into some bad luck over & over again didn't he?
& you got to meet him? That's so cool!
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

nice. Shaver is the real deal.

which reminds me of this article by Dave Pilot, it actually mentions both Billy Joe Shaver and My Morning Jacket as bein outlaw music.

Sleazy Rider

I love Hank Snow. And the Leon Russell album Hank Snow's Back, where he records country classics. Pretty much the usual suspects, Ithink Freddy Fender has a killer voice, but for me noone tops Ol' Watasha, Waylon epitomizes what country is supposed to be. Listening to Waylon Live right now!
Politics. It's a drag. They put one foot in the grave, and the other on The Flag.

QuoteDead Flowers at the end of Lebowski got me into Townes. ;D
Which albums do you have KCL?
I'll have to go look, but I have a double-disc live album of him somewhere in Texas and some sort of 'greatest hits' comp.

MMJ_fanatic

Jeez no mention of Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Jimmy Rodgers, Chet Atkins, or Glen Campbell yet?  Horrors! ;) I must profess my undying love for Hank (and Hank Jr.), Waylon, Willie, Kris, Johnny (& June), Patsy, Loretta, Bob Wills as well...
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

Live @ The Old Quarter? Excellent live album if that's the one you've got!
My advice is go straight out & buy the Texas Troubadour box set. If you don't feel like splashing out then look out for High, Low And In Between & The Late Great Townes Van Zandt as a 2 for 1.

I'm with you on most of those Fanatic. Don't have any Roy Clark, Jimmy Rogers or Chet Atkins though.

How come Emmylou didn't make your list?

i think that townes van zandt - the nashville sessions is my favourite of his.  i've probably mentioned that 49 times already. ;)

Of course I like Emmylou, I guess I consider her somewhat more contemporary (but she is a legend) and when I hear legend, I think my mind says "Classic".  Does any of that make sense(?)

Of course it does! Basically you're saying you want to go back in time & woo Emmylou Harris. Who doesn't want to do that?!!

I only have Detroit City. Bobby Bare Sings Lullabys, Legends and Lies has been on my 'to-buy' list for ages, apparently that's the best place to start.
