I haven't really loved anything since War Elephant.

agreed.   That album is great - each of the others has about 1/3 songs I love.

After to listening to this a lot over the weekend, I'm a little disappointed.   Not apparant to me what will be longterm keeper fan-favorites.

They always have one or two songs that are great live...I've heard "Let's All Go To The Bar" and "The Bump" and they work well live but yeah I'm not really big on this album.

Finally got around to listening to this. Its no BOFD or WE, but Im enjoying it after a couple listens. It sounds like how I would imagine their live shows sound and is a real fun listen.

their tour schedule is brutal.  14 straight shows with no off day.   I'm not sure I've ever seen a run of dates that long without a break.

if anyone DOES go to any shows... mind writing down the set list? I'm preparing for my first Deer Tick show next saturday in Nashville. Have to say Tick is the only one of the three Middle Bro gang that I'm not obsessed with yet.

I am going tomorrow and will report back.   If it helps, here are the two shows I've seen recently

April:  Easy, Choir of Angels, New Song (starting over?), Ashamed, New Song (Love is a Funny Word?), Baltimore Blues, Now It's Your Turn, New Song (Ms K), Authority Song (cover), Diamond Ring, New Song (Let's all go to the bar?) // Be Kind to Me (Michael Hurley cover), Mange

July: Bump (new?), Easy, Baltimore Blues, Miss K, Smith Hill, Walkin Out That Door (Ian), Old shoes (chris paddock), Main St (new?), Spend the Night, Little White Lies, Christmas All Summer Long, F Word (new?), Ashamed, Now It's Your Turn (ian), Let's Go to the Bar, Shotgun Blues // Serve The Server (Nirvana), Christ Jesus, Mange

I don't know the new songs at all yet. 2 things I'm hoping for are a Nirvana cover and a Middle Bro song, as well as any song off War Elephant

Look forward to your review Kyle.  When are you really gonna be able to tie one on for a Tick show.

We decded to go to the York, Pa show since it's a Saturday in a venue I've never been to.  I'm intrigued because the Strand is an ornate, historic theater that is seated yet the tix say GA.  I've never seen them in any setting other than dirty, dark clubs so this will be interesting.

this show will be a relatively sober affair too (so I should have a thorough review and setlist)

Next Deer Tick, however, will be Nov 18th and that's a birthday celebration for me w/ a few friends and mrs magh33ta, and I'm not driving, and I'm taking the afternoon off work get a jump.

Well, I survived another trip to the Met in Pawtucket.   Left house at 9:30, arrived 10:15.   Deer Tick played 10:45 – 12:40.   Home and in bed at 1:30.

It was much of what I expected.    Some drunken rowdiness.   Random craziness.    John was pretty gonzo – he sprained his ankle shooting a video and was on lots of painkillers ("luckily I have a VERY generous doctor") and he seemed a bit glassy eyed and out of it.   At one point he promised to French kiss, on stage, anyone who brought him a double ketel one and tonic w/ lime.   He got about 8 of them (kissed all the ladies), then lined them up onstage to cut through them.   Anyone in the front row who wanted some- he'd fill up his mouth with booze and transfer to a woman, or pour from high above into a guy.

They are known for pretty short sets but tonight it was 2 hrs, 25 songs – by far the longest I've seen them.   That's the good news- if you'd told me 25 songs, I would have been thrilled.   BUT – that's 10 songs off the new album, 8 (!!) covers, and only 7 songs from all the old albums.   Definitely a bummer.   From the new (unreleased) album they played everything except "let's go to the bar" and "electric" (which IMO is a snoozer).    Of the 10 new songs, I have to say, now that I have the leaked album and heard them live.... Not a huge fan... many seem pretty generic, boring, straight ahead rockers.   Definitely a bummer.... I always get to a stage in my band love that I long for the old stuff; can I be there already with Deer Tick, whom I've followed for less than a year?   The Bump and Miss K are new songs and great live.   And I heard Clowning Around for the first time, which is the song about a serial killer that the drummer sings, and that was cool.

8 Songs in, we'd had 5 new songs, including 4 I thought were so-so (something to brag about, love is a funny word, make believe, walkin Out that door), and I was thinking uh-oh this night is a dud.    But things definitely picked up in the middle, and Clowning Around, Ashamed, Smith Hill, Sunshine of Your Love was  great run that was well worth the admission.   Smith Hill is a fantastic song live (whole place belting out "I could drink myself to death tonight, I could stand and give a toast...").

Sometime shortly after this some crowdsurfing chick landed on the stage and rolled around a bit.   She then got up and gave John a hug and did some incoherent mumbling into the mic (something about her friend "J.T").   She left but not before stuffing the band's shared setlist down her tanktop I think in an attempt to invite John to get it.   She got pulled offstage by security and I'd say the night went a bit downhill after that.   I'm pretty sure the band couldn't really remember what they'd played or not, so they started playing covers, which were good, or at least interesting (the beatles, Dylan, some GnR before he admitted he didn't know the words and the guitar player said "good, didn't want to get to the solo!").   Baltimore Blues and Art Isnt Real were two well needed blasts of fresh air from War Elephant.   They KILLED them and honestly if the whole concert was this good it would have been epic.   20 Miles was great too.   The covers were clearly audibles and were "fine", but since they are known for playing all kinds of random cool covers (much appreciated Sunshine of Your Love), it was a bummer that 3 of the covers were the same as I heard on the boat a few months ago (shotgun blues, serve the servants, waitress in the sky).  I see what else they play sometimes – springsteen, la bamba, Maybelline, authority song....

I'm pretty sure that the setlist had "Easy", "Bar" (let's go to the?), "Mange" as a 3 song encore.   Not completely positive, as I was 2 deep in the crowd and there was only the one setlist in the middle of the stage in front of the drums.   But I think that's what it said and for sure there were 3 songs listed below a bold line.   Instead at some point the guitar player pointed out what time it was – the band had clearly lost track – and they went into Mange, no encore 'leaving and come back',  and that was it.   Easy would have been great and Lets Go To the Bar at the end would have been a singalong.

So that's my report.   In rereading, I'm sounding more harsh than I mean-  I had fun for sure... Mange was great... but the night tried my patience a bit, maybe just because I was tired and sober.    I talked to a guy who was there the night before- no dirty dishes either night.   They did play easy and Not So Dense, which is my favorite "deep track" and would loved to have heard, but he said they had more energy our night.   Don't blame them as playing a gig hours AFTER playing on national TV after drinking all day must be heard.   Spin reviewed the first show and pretty much said that.   John had a funny rant towards that Spin guy last night which was pretty funny.

Nasty setlist....Love the cover choices, but youre probably right that you missed out on a few older songs because of the setlist pilfering
