Thanks Ruckus.  I was just going by what it looked like on their website, and when you read through the package it sounds like you're going to be getting a physical CD single in there too.  But it is entirely possible I am just reading it wrong.

I read it that way too Brother Beck so we shall see.   It might be "Born at Zero" which is a song they've played a bit over the past year but didn't make the album.  If you watch the "making of" video clip further up in this thread it is in there, so they definitely recorded it!
Ahh, I actually went to the Partisan site and read the description.  What am I gonna do with a CD single?  I'm not really a collector so that's going up on ebay ;D

OUCH!!

Its gotten to the point that when I see a low score on a Pitchfork review I think to myself "I ought to check that one out".
The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

Pitchfork is a joke, I honestly dont even understand why they have the reputation they do. I never go there and only see them step onto their pedestal when stuff like this is linked somewhere.

I don't care for pitchfork because of all the music 'fans' that flock to see the new pitchfork acclaimed band that disappears after one album if only for the reason that they may have tried something different, regardless how soulless the music may be. :-X
It's crazy how influential they are.
BUT, they are spot on with this Deer Tick album.  I think it's pretty bad

I have grown to dislike this album too... just way too many "skippers"

If anyone wants Virginia Gal, the CD single PM me.  I'm sure a torrent of it'll be available soon as well.  It's so much better than most anything on Divine Providence.  Bluesy with jam potential

also, for anyone else going to the Boston show, I confirmed while at the venue that Deer Tick is going on last.   No opener either which is good news (didn't need a 3rd band w/ Dawes / Blitzen).   Rough times are going to be doors 6, Felice 6:45, Deer Tick 8:00 but final times will be posted on the Bowery Boston facebook page within a day of the concert or so.

deer tick / felice in Boston was great last night.   Will report fully later.

Crowd was good, setlist was perfect (both songs I've never heard and wanted to hear, I did), good to see Ms Penny Lane, on the rail, Mrs Magh33ta scored the setlist, cool poster.

What a great show! DT covered the Replacements Bastards of Young and sang Something in the way with Felice Bros. Great sharing the rail for a bit with Mahgeetah and the Mrs and their friends Zach and Sean Riley. What a great night.

Deer Tick Boston:

I've been on a bit of a Deer Tick bender – 4 shows in 6 months.   And I can happily say that I'm Done with Deer Tick for a while – not because I'm sick of them.   Quite the opposite – Friday night's show was so enjoyable, so satisfying in every respect – the company, the crowd, the setlist, the shenanigans – that I can rest.   There were 2 songs I had not yet heard and wanted to – got them both!  Like eating a great meal – I am content, full, satisfied.

Pre-game with some food and drink at Rock Bottom down the street from the Royale.   Felt a little crazy to be pre-gaming so early, but that's the life of a 6 pm show.  Walking there, I noted that there were 4 people in line at 4.   That put a thought in my head that people were serious about this show.   Great to see Penny Lane (4 states and counting!) and spend some time hearing about her whirlwind 3-night tour.   I love hanging with people more hardcore than me because I don't feel so crazy.   Our waiter was a big MMJ fan from Kentucky which made for plenty of good conversation, until I told him "I wish you were coming to the show tonight" and Mrs Magh33ta told me to get a room.

"Doors open at 6" apparently means 6:40 which made for a long wait once we got to the venue.   Luckily Sean Riley had secured a spot near the front of the line, which by now had grown longer.   I felt a little jerky cutting, not a lot, and figured I'd better get used to the feeling in case the opportunity arises at MSG  ;)

We secured a spot, on the rail, a little right of center.   Actually, I was next to the 4 people who I saw in line at 4 pm who were dead center on the rail.   That gave me a little thrill, as if I'd stolen 2 free hours of food and drink and still ended up right where I'd have been if I'd gotten in line at 4 pm.

I had been listening to Felice Brothers on heavy rotation since this show was announced, and knew S/T (that's self-titled BTW), Yonder, and Celebration pretty well.   I had not seen any live /  youtube so I was pretty interested to see what they were all about.   I had a great time and would definitely see them again.   They did seem to play more of their uptempto stuff, which is the stuff I like more – and I'm not sure if that's always the case or because they only had an hour set.   But I did peek at some older setlists that had Wonderful Life, Murder by Mistletoe, and some of the new album slower tracks on them but they were skipped.   Fine by me.   The crowd was pretty into them and by halfway through their set the place was packed.

Deer Tick – what can I say.   The pessimist in me was expecting a short show- 1 hr ish – likely packed with songs from the new album, which I'm not a fan of...  But instead we got a fantastic show, plenty of oldies, some covers, collaborations, etc.   The boys were in fine spirits   (when I saw them in Oct in RI they were much lower energy).   There wasn't much banter or silliness between songs, but I think that's because they knew they had tight deadlines (see the setlist pic and a big "Be Swift Gentlemen!" written along the side).

In terms of setlist, it started strong and never looked back (The Bump, Easy, Baltimore #1).   There were plenty of new songs, but never took the wind out of the show for me.   Maybe they were better spaced, maybe I like them more.   Most likely it's because although they played 9 songs off the new album, the 3 they didn't play are my 3 least favorites! (Something to Brag about, Make Believe, Electric).

John also mentioned his latest collaboration super-group Diamond Rugs and did one of those songs from the upcoming album early on and another in the encore.   I liked em.   I will see them on tour.

In terms of old songs, we got 8 – WAY more than I was expecting, and what an 8 it was.   I couldn't have been happier (come to think of it I posted my fav 10 DT songs somewhere).   The two songs I really wanted were Not So Dense and Dirty Dishes.   The first one was nailed at the end of the set before Mange – a great 1-2 punch.  Dirty dishes- what can I say - I guess a little cliched but I still hadn't heard it live.    I had pretty low hopes at the end of the regular set, knowing it was 9:40 and we were approaching a hard stop.   In fact, at that moment I was guessing a 1 song Lets Go to the Bar encore and out the door.  WOW – nothing could be further from the truth.  We got a SEVEN song encore, including an awesome 3-song stripped down set, 3 covers with Felice Brothers, and Bar to end it all in mayhem at 10:15, a massive curfew buster that had everyone stunned.

To start, it was just John and the keyboard player, playing another Diamond Rugs song called "Christmas in a Chinese Restaurant" or something like that.   I REALLY liked it (youtube: "deer tick wellfleet christmas" for a clip of another time they've played it).  Then it was a John solo Houston, TX – followed by Dirty Dishes, with the band rejoining one by one until they were all blaring by the end.   Great, Great, stuff.    It just felt SPECIAL.   I guess because we knew it was curfew time, the fact that they kept pressing on and playing felt better and better.   The covers were Something in the Way (Nirvana), Two Hands (Van Zandt), and Be Kind to Me (Michael Hurley), only the last of which I'd seen before.

To make matters even better, that whole 3-song start to the encore was an audible – NOT on the setlist (see below) but what a move – made the night even more memorable.   Just so... .improbable!?

If there's ANY disappointment at all (and I'm really digging to find one), it's that I knew the ending "Let's Go to the Bar"s had been big parties lately, with the crowd joining the band onstage in a big free-for-all.   I had warned Mrs Magh33ta and she said she was up for it.   When we secured our rail spot, I figured this was working well and I was going to get come good footage of her and the band.    But, because they were joined by Felice Bros and some other of their friends and entourage, nobody else joined and my plan fizzled.

I'm not quite sure what happened to Penny – I was worried she was swept away somehow but suspect instead she drifted off to meet other friends – she seems to have friends wherever she goes!   But she was back with us by the end of the show so I could tell she was fine.   Amy did manage to score both setlists – beginners luck I guess!!

We had an extra ticket and my good friend Zach stepped in- he is not a huge concert-goer and wasn't familiar with either band at all.    But he's a good-natured guy and always up for anything, so he tagged along and had a complete blast.   I think he saw how much fun this can be.   He's now thinking about coming with me to MMJ MSG to try and re-capture the good times.   Obviously Deer Tick is a different vibe than MMJ but I'm confident if we get him swept up in the GA West crowd he'd like it!

We probably should have called it a night once the show was over, but we stupidly decided to continue on to another stop.   That's the mindset after a Deer Tick show.   Not a story for the forums though.

Great to hear about the show!  Also thanks for the reminder on Diamond Rugs.   I'd kinda forgotten about them when I'd actually been looking forward to this album since I 1st heard of the collaboration

Haha I KNEW someone would beat me up for droning on about a bunch of irrelevant stuff.   Didn't think it'd be you!   I write these things for me, really- because my memory is not great and I enjoy reading them years later.   I've kept a log of shows for many many years now (OCD sign I guess)... just started posting the Deer Tick ones here...

...I saw the felice brothers play 'Two Hands' at the NFF 2 yrs ago, even tho its bascially a hymn, its a fun cover...love me some TVZ

I, for one, am really a fan of Devine Providence. To me it captures all that shit that the Pitchfork reviewer was talking about... in a good way. McCauly is a creepy, insane, alcoholic. To me Devine Providence captures that. I love it.  It definitely has a punk-esque sound, which is awesome for me. I grew up pretty much solely on punk shit like Black Flag, which i have grown out of since high school. (By the way, I'm sure the boys in Tick would agree with me, but having an album compared to/remind one of Damages would in no way insult. So, bravo Pitchfork!) To listen to a band I love now do stuff similar to that is really fun for me.

I hate Pitchfork with all of my soul as well. Any music media source that hates on the vast majority of popular bands but will accept a bag of pubic hair from Animal Collective has gone astray.
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...
