Just came to post this very same thing

My college radio show was "I Sold My Soul for David Grohl". I was very disappointed by that bland double album 5 years ago or whenever. But this makes me very happy

The new Foo Fighters is streaming and I personally think it rocks. It's hard not to like this band. They are just hard, alternative rock, nothing derivative. I just got every single one of their albums from the local library system and was surprised at how much i tossed them off over the years. I've even seen them live once and thought they were great. This one is a great listen.

Yeah, they are great live.

Last night became my (better late than never) indoctrination into Foo Fighters.  I've got a new top 5 band.

Palladia, an HD channel spawned from VH1, premiered a 2-hour "rock doc" on Grohl and his evolving line-up.  This was commercial-free, followed by 3 or 4 videos, then an episode of VH1 Storytellers.  I also recorded from Palladia live at Wembley Stadium and from PBS the 2009 episode of FF on Austin City Limits.

Needless to say, I went to bed kinda late.  :o

Its funny; I only have 3 FF tracks in my entire 100+ GB music library, and none of their CDs.

Speaking of funny, Grohl is a dork but a very funny guy, charismatic and talented as hell.  He's found some solid bandmates but its cleary the David Grohl show.  He seems like a fairly grounded guy, likeable (unless your offended when he re-records your parts on albums).  Like MMJ, as long as everyone knows who's boss, they get along well.

So, once again, John shows up 15 years late.  Suggestions on where to start?  You forum kids rarely steer me wrong.

I by no means am a FF expert and just recently obtained their whole discography.

It seems that fans favor the Colour and the Shape (2nd album) but I certainly also enjoyed their 1st which is a classic and their 3rd There is Nothing Left to Lose may be my favoirte; Grohl often refers to this album as a transitional album with several lineup changes. He stated that they recorded it at a cabin and had a BBQ everyday after the recording session which makes me feel good about that.

Generally it seems that some fans had criticsms with each preceeding album being One by One (which is decent), In Your Honor (double disc acoustic electric, which I think is damn good) and echoes, silence patience, grace (like one by one has its moments but not their strongest).

Wasting Light may turn out to be my favorite, it's a great, hard rock album with a lot of hooks. No matter what they are a hard, alternative rock band, in the vein of pearl jam. Most criticisms are that they are too same-y sounding but if you are in the mood for fun rock you don't have to think about too much you can't go wrong with anything they've done.

I had a very weird Foo Fighters day yesterday.  I've never listened to anything other than what they have on the radio.  Yesterday, I read an article about them before I went to lunch.  Then, as I go to lunch, I had a song of theirs stuck in my head.  As soon as I start my car that very song comes on the radio.  I don't even know enough about them to know the name of the song, I just know some of the words.   Weird enough already.  Then, last night, I stumble upon what I'm assuming is the same rock doc you're talking about.  I liked the doc and thought Grohl came across as a pretty genuine and likable guy.    Is that some kind of sign I need to listen to more of them???

you guys should check out the stream of the new album, the first 5 tracks are undeniably great!

and getting to see Bob Mould was an extra treat

YES!  and Grohl saying, "we've just made Copper Blue!" cracked me up.

The fact that Grohl redid all the drum tracks on that early album, forcing their first drummer to feel he must leave, is kind of a dick move, but then I thought about it and...

...its his band, his vision, he is a drummer.  The current drummer either has the talent to prevent Grohl from taking over on recordings or is secure enough to let Grohl have his way.  It seems like a pretty sweet gig if you can get past egos.

Its lke MMJ.  Carl, Bo, Tom, and Pat have to accept that its really the Jim James show in many ways and, I think, the more they let him express his vision, the more he "lets" them contribute in the recordings and performances.

Bottom line- no Foo Fighters without David Grohl just as there's no My Morning Jacket without Jim James.

From what I remember reading about that there were ego clashes and possibly substance issues with that drummer Grohl couldn't get behind.

I don't mind the Foos. They aren't really a hard rock band though; more like suped-up power-pop (and I don't mean this as an insult since power-pop is one of the great music genres).

Anyway, I like a handful of their songs and the new album is pretty ballsy. One big problem I've always had with them is that many of their best-known arena rockers sound similar (tempo, structure etc...). I also wish they actually played more solos (I know Grohl has it in him too - I loved his guitar on the Foos live cover of "Young Man Blues" at the recent tribute to The Who).

And to top of a Foo-centric weekend, they were musical guests on Saturday Night Live last night.  I only saw the first performance, though Dave Grohl showed up in the SNL Digital Short and at least one other skit; he does like to ham it up (see their music videos).

I ordered the new CD, and downloaded some early stuff.  It is fairly similar, reminds me a bit of Mould/Sugar, which makes his cameo the more fitting.  Very listenable, at the very least.

I love Foo Fighters. My favourite album by far is There Is Nothing Left To Lose but I am really excited about the new one. I've listened to it a couple of times on their website. Arlandria is a favourite at the moment. They were in Australia recently to promote the new album and my friend won a Meet and greet with them. She got them to sign my 7inch This Is A Call and the drummer Taylor to sign one of my Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders albums too. I was a happy girl.

Foo Fighters are ok I guess.  They have really catchy pop friendly songs that sell very well.  However my only beef with them is that album to album so many of the songs sound the same.  I have heard the new one and though it is a bit harder sound wise it still falls into this problem imo.

I suppose the fact that I'd really paid them no attention until this past Friday has prevented me from regarding them as you do.  However, as I plow through some of their albums, I hear what you (and others) are saying.  They are "catchy" which is a good thing.  So much unlistenable crap out there, so I'm okay with it.  I'd much rather have my kids get into Foo Fighters than the other pop drivel that's out there (I'd name some examples, but I can't).

I'm loving the new Foo.  Fortunately, so is my 2 1/2 year old son.  It's a lot harder than past stuff imo.  The first listen I felt as others here have expressed, a lot like past releases, nothing too new.  The more I repeated though, the more I could hear the newness.  It's certainly got a metal aspect to it and the re-addition of the third guitar in Pat Smear is excellent.  The guitars and the bridges are where it's at.

Dear Rosemary, White Limo, Arlandria, Miss the Misery, I Should Have Known and Walk are probably my tops as of the last listen.

Here's a YouTube link of my son getting into White Limo.  It's primal.

Thanks Johnny!  You never know if you're falling into that trap of thinking everything your kid does is adorable or if maybe it really is.  This one I thought was worth sharing and I'm glad you enjoyed.

I'm getting him prepped for May 30th, I can't freaking wait.
