What a talent. He could easily be the front man for a successful band. I was at the side of the stage and got a few high quality videos, even though I was not supposed to. Also some good photos. I was filming him in the wings when Bo had to nudge me out of the way as he got onstage. Carl acted as his own roadie, and has some wild sound toys.

i wonder if he recorded any songs inspired the dearth of quality mexican food in nashville, but didn't put them on his album...

terrific show!

Sounds like the show was awesome!!
Will you be uploading the videos?
How loud can silence get?

I never have done that before. I guess I need to set up a youtube account. Any way to just paste them here from the chip?

I wish.

I'd love to hear more.

It seems Carl stays away from playing Jacket tunes.  Was that true last night?

Did he only play All Birds Say tracks or did he pull from Lose What's Left as well?

Glad you had a good time.

I am not familiar with his solo stuff. I stumbled upon the show on this website 3 days ago, saw tickets were $12.50 and the venue was only 40 miles from my work. I snuck out early, dressed like a 50 year old coming from a semi-professional job, which is true, and had no idea what to expect. Everyone was 15-20 years younger than me and dressed like they belonged in LA. I was lucky enough to sit on the subwoofer adjacent to the stage, and also hide behind the curtain where the stage access is. I was not familiar with any songs, except the last one Lolly-Pop. He has gadgets that records snippets of him, playing guitar, singing, hand clapping, etc. He would then change instruments with the other sound complementing him in loops. He only played one song that had any MMJ like energy, and that was a few minutes of controlled feedback with melody. It seemed like it was almost a private show for friends, as he seemed to know half of the crowd, and made several comments about his former LA life. It was like he was some guy playing in a friends living room. I will investigate posting the videos when I am not at work, which means Monday.

One of the best parts of the show was how witty Carl was. He was joking about being at the end of his long two day tour, trying to find a good Margarita in Tenn, saying it helps the Mexican food there taste better. Deft. saw a side of him I wasn't expecting. Nice seeing Bo on stage, the support and love were apparent.

He sounded great, All Birds Say tunes were played. Seemed like a similar set to the Joe's Pub show.

Such a great time last night.. not much else to say!  He did an even better looping than in NYC i'd say but a similar setlist.
Someone made me miss Crispy when he yelled out "CARL BROMEL KICKS ASS!!!!"
good times! it was nice to have a mini T5 crew reunion :)

It was quite dark, I felt lucky to get a shot as good as this. You can even tell it is Bo on the piano.

link removed since the next post is more efficient.

Thanks for the photo.

We know Carl and Bo came to join MMJ around the same time in 2004.  Did they know each other or work with each other before then?

I know there must be some simple way you posted my picture. Cut and paste is my least proficient computer skill.

if you're using photobucket, go for the option that is phrased something like "direct link". basically, the end of the long string of information has to end in .gif, jpg, or .png. then, when you want to post, click up above and paste that string into the prompt

I tried that but with no success. I will research this further. Got several more cool ones, including a facial close up of Carl whistling.

Its all the magic of the right mouse button.

Whenever your cursor is on an image, right click and look for "properties" from the menu that appears.  Hold your left mouse button down as you highlight the entire URL of the image, which must end .jpg or .gif or .bmp.

Then, with the cursor over the highlighted URL, right-click and choose "copy" OR press (simultaneously) Ctrl and C.  Then paste the URL between the image brackets using right-click "paste" or Ctrl and V simultaneously.

Its all explained here: http://mymorningjacket.com/forum/index.php?topic=12431.0

Irregardless, great picture and I appreciate the report on Carl's show.  Love that Bo was there.  He's a cool cat, too.

Someone made me miss Crispy when he yelled out "CARL BROMEL KICKS ASS!!!!"
;D

two memorable moments during the show:

--carl was at the pedal steel, bo at the piano.  they had their backs to one another but were playing something so beautiful...i don't remember what it was off the top of my head.  mmm.

--at another point carl walked over to the piano and played guitar there while bo played.  something we don't get to see at full-band shows b/c of the staging.

mmtt:  carl was very funny!  toward the end of his set he thanked everyone to coming out for what was dangerously "close to a soft-rock show."  ;D ;D

rincon:  what great luck you found out about this show before it happened.  glad you made it!

I am currently downloading a video that shows Carl going over to Bo. This youtube thing takes a while. I also videod from behind the backstage curtain, Carl on the pedal steel, from 7 feet away. It is VERY dark, but if you were there you know that. I was at the front of the stage the whole show with my DLSR. I must have stuck out, I was the LEAST trendy or cool looking person there.

Carl Broemel Hollywood 2-18-11

wow, holy shit. another true testimonial of MMJ genius. first pat and jim do their duet thing in louisville and next bo and carl do this in LA.

Shows you how well they are able to play off each other, and makes me wonder what percentage of their playing live is "improv" and just a result of them feeding off each others' playing.

Poor tom doesnt have anyone to pair up with, but i guess all bass guitarists are kind of out there on their own anyways.. and for good reason. they add a huge dynamic to the overall sound.

if i had to guess the monitor mix for each member on stage i'd say jim gets pat higher in his mix and pat probably has himself loudest in his. bo probably hears carl the loudest, and carl probably has himself loudest. tommy probably has everyone the same for him.
