Bobby's ok.

The same cannot be said for his Capri pants which suffered the fate of being cut off from his body.

(the first sentence in this post is true. The second may or may not be)

Lots of it is on YouTube, but check out this clip on this page, all cleaned up, looks pretty good (except for all the naked sunburned dancing hippies )

This is one of the best Dead shows ever, IMO.  I'm stoked and I hope it means it will come out on Blu Ray/DVD

For Sirius listeners, if you're using the internet to listen to the Dead channel, in the upper right is a little button called something like "My Dead". If you click on it, you can customize your Dead listening to era, coast (wtf?) and short or long jams.

I don't know how long this has been around, but I just found it.

I don't have Sirius but it sounds cool.  This is hilarious:  I can easily imagine some Deadhead saying "I only want to listen to East Coast Dead shows, don't give me any of that laid-back West Coast shit"  or "I don't want to hear any short songs, just the jams and second set long songs."

Ha! I can see more usefulness here, like, "-jorts"
"...it's gonna be great -- I mean me coming back with the band and playing all those hits again"

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Oh, I definitely have it set to only the longest jams. That's where the magic happens. or happened as it were.

I was watching the Phish webcasts this weekend and thanking God for Trey's sobriety and it hit me that we were robbed of so many years of music because of Jerry's health. Such a bummer.

Thanks for the remembrances, Eric and Mr. White.

As and avid camper/canoe-camper, John, I can appreciate your story of celebrating Jerry in the woods but so sorry to hear of your friend's passing at such an early age.  The loss of good friends like that leaves a big void.

Nice post Eric.

What's amazing is the double encore, two songs about, well you know. I miss Jerry dearly. Had some of the greatest times of my life following the Dead. First show was in 1977.

Loved hearing Weir with MMJ doing IKYR. My two favorite bands.

Thanks. A sad thing to remember, but it needed to be noted,IMO.

I totally agree with your post too. Double encore was rare, and for it to be those two is almost a bit poetic in their foreshadowing. I too miss the big fella dearly, and had some great times, and lifelong memories following the Dead.

So thankful to have experienced that, and to have Jerry, and the guys be a part of the soundtrack to my life.

Another milestone coming up in a few weeks as Jerry would've turned 71 on 8/1. I know what I'll be doing that day.

Hey Eric, just curious, how many Dead shows would you say you've been to?

Me too!  I wish I could have seen Bobby up there on stage with the boys!  Talk about magical!

It took me a while to find a band that filled the void left after Jerry passed and MMJ were just that band to do that for me.  MMJ are my favorite band currently still playing but the Dead are still my all-time favorite band and, as the immortal words of Looks Like Rain say, "...that's not going to change."

I didn't get in on following the Dead until my high school days in the late 80's but I still caught some memorable shows before the scene and Jerry's health started deteriorating which I will cherish forever!

Sidenote to this is that Jerry was taken from us on August 9. That was a sad day and I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news.

On a better note my son was born on August 9, so I do have something wonderful to celebrate!l

Hey Eric, just curious, how many Dead shows would you say you've been to?

Not as many as some here I'm sure.  I was fortunate to get to hangout in some lots in the mid to late 70's and take the scene in, but it wasn't until 1981 that I saw my first show. Like MMJ did to me years later, I was hooked! I never really counted or kept stubs, but I'd say probably about 35-40. Pretty much all of them East Coast shows and none further west than Pittsbirgh.

Very fortunate, and thankful to have seen that many, but unfortunately I never got to see The Jerry Garcia Band. Somehow the stars just never aligned for me on that, and I've always been a bit bummed about missing those shows. Can't catch them all I know, and I don't dwell on what I missed, but I definitely enjoy the memories of the ones I was lucky enough to see.

That's great, sounds like good times indeed. I wish I could have experienced at least one.

I'm 33 and the vast majority of my friends grew up obsessively collecting/trading/listening to Dead tapes but only one of them actually got to see The Grateful Dead. Jerry died when we were 14-15 years old. Some of those guys still consider GD their favorite band and give me shit about MMJ. I like to give them shit back about the fact that they've never even seen their favorite band live. A couple of them are finally coming around to them and the Bobby sit ins have helped. I have no point to make here, just thought I'd share.

I had some friends who were OCD Dead Heads who couldn't comprehend listening to any other music other than the Dead and would always give me shit for my interest in music outside of the Grateful Dead.    :cheesy:

They have mellowed some on their OCD in that regard, but I'm always humored when I think about how it was almost a mortal sin to allow your ears to hear anything other than the Dead back in the day...

Did anyone else see the article in Rolling Stone about the new '77 box set?

There is a quote in that article from Bobby saying that he thought the late 80's were the best period of the band.  I thought that was really interesting as I had never heard anyone, let alone a member of the band, say that.

'89 up until Brent's death in '90 was definitely the peak of the years I got to see them ('86 to '95) but I never would have thought of it as their absolute peak.  The energy of those shows was amazing though, and Jerry was so engaged and sharp in that time.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.
