Jen, if you ever feel bad about missing a Spanish Jam while peeing, you can think about a guy I know who was at one of the Madison Square Garden shows in '83 and in the bathroom when they broke out St. Stephen.  That's orders of magnitude worse than your story.
If there's ever a Cortez, by Neil or otherwise, you can be assured I will be in the bathroom.  That's how my life rolls..

But missing that Stephen is pretty major!!

This is why we stop drinking liquids before shows!
I don't understand?  Stop drinking?

Woh!  At first glance I thought that was etched into the bottle, then looking closer...WTF?  Yeah, depending on how you view life that's either a sign to stop drinking, or one that says BOTTOMS UP!  I'd be inclined to lean towards the latter.  Steal My Face right down the hatch!

Thanks for sharing the memories, Mr. White.

And, speaking of memories, it looks like JerryGarcia.com website has been revamped:

3,450 shows?!?  That's mind-boggling.
15,000 hours of recorded music?!?  I might have to quit my day job.

HEY JOHNNY I'll be getting the soundboard of tonight's show either in the next couple weeks or in mid-December when my friend who's getting it brings it down to NC for me to copy--- IT'S GOT YOUR NAME ON IT!!!!

Do you still have this show?  Would love to have it.

Europe 72 coming to a theater near you

Sweet!!!

Europe '72 was one of my "go to" albums back in the day and I still spin my original vinyl a few times a year, especially when the temperature rises.  Just did so a few days ago.

The show they will play at the movies in July was from a German TV show, but this is the well circulated Cophenhagen show from the same tour.  Lots of versions of this video on youtube, this one seems to be pretty high quality.  I'm looking forward  to seeing that Bremen Beat Club show at the movies next month.

Had some friends over for a listening party last weekend.  I chose 1985, creating a "dream show" culled from that year, most of it from 3-28-85 (set I) and 6-28-85 (set II) with a few additions. These shows have been faves of mine for years, but I was still surprised how good they sounded up real loud. Front half of set II Hershy Park the band was truly on fire. So much bass and so much separation between the instruments, the band jamming so good!  Too bad about the forgotten lyrics and a few bum notes, but ya gotta love the Dead warts and all!

Damn! That was a great little short show (last night's Dead at the Movies, Bremen '72)

Garcia was on fire and making it look effortless and my oh my that sweet Fender tone he was getting out of his Strat.  I believe that was Alligator without the sticker.  http://jerrygarcia.com/guitars/#alligator  Sounded so great, such a sweet strong country rock tone, perfectly foiled against Weir's warm Gibson sound.

One More Saturday Night was a definite highlight, holy shit they were jamming.  I thought to myself "this may be the most perfect hard rocking grooving expression of Chuck Berry rock 'n roll ever" (neck and neck with the Rolling Stones doing something like Brown Sugar in 1972 or Wilco playing Monday live in 2008-2010).  Keith and Jerry were so locked in, rocking the fuck out!

I loved seeing the goofiness, Bob and Jerry disagreeing about whether to wait for Pig's organ to get fixed, Jerry telling Donna (right before the second version of Playin' In The Band) to back off from the microphone, restarting songs, all that was funny and cool to see.

Phil and Billy were all over it all night long, too.  Garcia was the man of the night though.  He was blazing away in the Other One.  I am firmly convinced with the listening I've been doing the past couple years, that Spring to Winter 1972 was the peak of Jerry's guitar playing, he was so clear and precise, so fluid, never running out of ideas, aggressively leading when called for but always fitting in to the song.  Seeing him do it 40' tall on the IMAX screen really brought it home.

Yeah it was short but I knew that going in, so I wasn't surprised.  To get more of the same, we watched the 4-17-72 show at home with some friends the next night.  Its all on YouTube, as I posted it above.

Jerry would've been 72 today, and I'll be raising a glass for the big guy's birthday.

Gone way too soon, and missed all the time.
