If it's still up watch: FOTM>ALTHEA>NFA"

that's what ended 18 hours ago, thought I quoted it. Never got to see what it was.

I am not interested in watching any of the John Mayer stuff either...sorry if that makes me a jerk.

walterfredo

right there with you.  The Mayer thing just seems a little pathetic.  That said, the old farts have every right to keep on truckin' if they so desire.  I'm just not interested in the slightest. I had a blast in Santa Clara and Chicago last summer.  I mean a real good time!  But that was my goodbyes. And really guys, John Mayer? I know he is a talented guitar player, but file me under hater now. I think it's awesome that some are digging it though.

beardedwonder

That's unfortunate y'all don't dig Mayer. But I understand. Admittedly, he's got some cheez factor but his chops are all there. I like that he's not billed as the next Jerry. Nor are Dead&Co billed as the Grateful Dead. There just doing their thing.

Personally, I was not a fan of FTW or Trey up there. IMHO last Dead & Co tours SF and MSG shows blew the doors off FTW. To each their own.

I was lucky enough to see Jerry & the boys a couple times and the sequential bands a few more. I am pumped to see this band 4 times this summer. I'm def gonna have a real good time.

After the movie/show ended last night they played like 15 minutes of Dead and Co. live, I guess to get people interested in the shows.
I had no choice but to watch. It was painful to watch John Mayer, only reconfirming to me why I don't want to go to any of these shows this summer. And then he sang Franklins Tower and I hated every second of it. Then Bob came in and sang verses of it too and pretty much mangled the whole thing. of course I know that John Mayer can play guitar and they needed someone who could handle those songs...but it is just not for me. I'd honestly rather see Dark Star Orchestra do these songs!

Another interesting thing I noticed. We went with 7-8 people last night and 2 of them saw a Dead and Co. show with John Mayer already and liked it, and are going to 2-3 more shows this summer. After we saw that Franklins Tower she asked me what I thought and I told her. Then I asked her if she had ever heard any of John Mayer's music before and she said No. I think that's the difference. I am completely jaded going into it because I have heard JM's music before and know how horrible it is. I also had the experience of seeing him live like 10 years ago on a coheadlining deal where I had to sit through his set to get to the band I liked and I thought it was awful. I said the same thing then I would say now: if all he did was play guitar and never opened his mouth to sing I could handle him. And if I faced away from the stage and didn't see his face that would help too. :p

I was trying to come up with something good to say, but this guys comment pretty much sums it up for me. I know what Mayer was in the past....but his dedication to this band has been UNREAL in my opinion. I respect all your opinions. I do. But when I look up there and I see all of them just smiling and grooving the fuck down, its nearly impossible for me to NOT like it. They are all having a blast. Also, Mayer is in my top 3 modern guitarists, (i know thats sure to get some flack, but coming from a guitar player, what he does is unreal) along with Derek Trucks and Carl Broemel

I'll go with the "go somewhere that you can". It's hard enough hearing Bobby butcher Jerry songs, change the entire arrangement and just totally ruin it. Add Mayer to the mix and it's an easy pass. I'm beyond grateful for all the times I got to experience GD/Jerry, and happy for those that still enjoy this. Luckily I have plenty of other options that still do it for me.

I'm with walterfredo on this one.

And I have yet to see JRAD but keep hearing incredible things. Wish they would travel this way.

definitely see them if you have the chance!  Incredible. Looking forward to them crushing it at High Sierra this July.

JRAD are damn fine musicians. The tempo they create is just too much for me. Sounds like 2 part delicious coffee & cream and the rest shots of jittery but not bitter expresso. Haha. But I listen.

Other than Dead&Co the Golden Gate Wingmen are my favorite Dead band on the scene right now.

Yeah, I'm in the camp of thinking that in spite of what I think about Mayer's solo music, his questionable personal life choices in the past and any of that, the dude can play guitar, he is sincerely passionate for the music of the Grateful Dead and you put him and Oteil on bass in the Dead and Co and the result is surprisingly impressive to my ears.

I really don't care who plays the music, I just want to hear it played well.  I think Dead and Co are playing it real well, from what I've seen and heard.

That Slipknot that they showed after the movie last night was tight, intense and to me it sounded as strong as anything from 7-2-89.  I can understand that some don't care for Mayer's vocals, but they don't bother me at all.  Its not likely I'll travel out of state to see Dead and Co, but I think they are doing it better than Furthur ever did and a lot better than the Fare Thee Well shows.  I'm not into JRAD either, can't put my finger on it, but it just does not float my boat.  I don't think Russo's drumming is to my liking, so the rhythm section is lacking for me.

Dark Star Orchestra and Xtra Ticket (with A-Bear) from Arizona/Colorado are doing it for me even more though.    Xtra Ticket are coming back to Phoenix in a week and I'm stoked for it.

Having a chance to see a show I attended almost 27 years ago at a movie theater last night, I am blown away by how great the Grateful Dead were.  I almost cried during Jerry's first solo of Crazy Fingers, had a massive smile on my face the whole night.  I've seen The Dead, Furthur, and Ratdog.  If I had to choose a guitarist to take Jerry's place, it would be Kadlecik.  But, honestly, I think I'll stick to my memories and recordings of the original band, 1965-1995.

That He's Gone was my favorite part. Dear Mr. Fantasy was pretty amazing too. :)

I agree. There's no shortage of amazing quality live shows out there. Listening to them makes me happy.

And what I REALLY like to do is pick out my own audio of the Dead in their prime and have a dance party at my house.  wish I had some more of my dancing buddies who lived in the same city, but what can you do.  I also wish there was more high quality video of the Dead in the early 80s and prior.  There are moments in the shows post-1987 that hint at how good the Dead were in their prime, but it can be hard for me to see them in their decline in the later years.  I thought the Dear Mr. Fantasy was the highlight of 7-2-89 and I will always be excited to hear To Lay Me Down, but ol Jerr just couldn't get that one going in that show and that was bittersweet.  His smiles all night were probably the real highlight for me, more than any of the music in that show.  Seeing Jerry happy and into it makes me happy.

I very distinctly remember the Dear Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude.  My original perspective was neck-deep in sweaty Deadheads, not very close to the stage.

His smile was mighty contagious, then and now...
