Just curious Steve, why have you never felt compelled to post in the forum before today?  Serious question.  I'm trying to get into the mind of someone who only feels compelled to speak out when they have something negative to say.

I don't see what the big deal is here.  It's not like he's trolling.  This board is filled with die hards and at times I've refrained from expressing an honest opinion just to keep the waves calm.  It's nice to have a counterpoint to the redundancy of so many of the album reviews.

I never said it was a big deal.    I am just always skeptical when someone's first post is negative.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Is there a rule like where you must say 5 nice things first before you say anything mean?

I sometimes wonder why people feel compelled to post thousands and thousands of times on a web forum. What gives?

I agree with a lot of what Steve says but I'm hoping and guessing that it will "grow on me" as well. Circuital (the song) may become a "best of" with time... but hell, what do I know?

If some stranger walked into your house and the first thing they said was your home smells...what would your reaction be?

Hubcap

Just got done listening to it.

The Good:
Victory Dance
Circuital
The Day is Coming
Outta My System
You Wanna Freak Out

So sick of Wonderful, Holdin On To Black Metal just does not fit on this album.  And Slow Slow Tune and Movin Away should just move away from this album.  I love all that my morning jacket has done in the past, but these 2 songs are un-listenable.

Circuital - 5/10

I have and without giving too much away to anyone who hasnt please please please do not get too excited.
I rate this band probably higher than any band I have ever seen or heard but this recent offering is many a mile away from a promised return to what the band are known for and I would go as far as say this album drifts further away from what we know them for.
Apart from the first couple of tracks and another couple of half decent ballads this is not a very memorable effort whatsoever after all the anticipation.
Gone is the haunting melodic vocal effect, gone is the roots/folk/country rock sound and even the jam rock guitar solos are kept down to a minimum.
I would struggle to place any track on a best of album and dont think many of the tracks would make much of an impact live if it wasnt for the brilliance of what MMJ are live.
In comparison to previous albums this one must rate very low. I can not pin down what has happened here. Is this just the band trying to pin down record sales in middle America and the UK? or just another change in style/ to a middle of the road pop/rock band.
It certainly is not a back to the roots album.

Perfectly put...and not what I was hoping I would be saying after 3 listens. This so far is their weakest album, and that should not be the case for a band so talented and in such a position to really break through.

Can't I just ask Steve a question?   He's a big boy.  I think he can handle it.

I didn't realize that a public web forum was somebody's "house."

Dude's comment wasn't that negative, it was an honest critique. He's obviously a fan. Why are folks so sensitive? You'd think they wrote the songs themselves.

I personally only post on web forums when I feel I have a genuine question, concern, or contribution to make. Of course that's all subjective, but I don't fret over whether or not my comment is positive or negative. As long as someone isn't being a straight up ass-hole, what difference does it make?

the point of a message board is to talk about music....sometimes it is not going to be a lovefest.  I like boards where there are people expressing their actual opinions..and not just saying nice things so everyone likes them...as long it is not in a ridicuolously offensive way I see nothing wrong with that.

EXACTLY! If you want to see what happens when a fan base becomes a bunch of sycophants, go over to Ryan Adams' forum...fancy tap dancing Jesus, that crew is beyond hope!

Am I the only one who thinks it strange that the negative posts always seem to deserve their own thread?  Like they are somehow more important than the other 87 opinions that all managed to find their way into the same forum discussion.   Again, I don't know how to make it any more clear that I could care less if someone doesn't like the album.

I think the critique would be more helpful if it was based on more than, "It doesn't sound exactly like [Insert Album Here]" After the initial reaction to Evil Urges, and now Circuital it seems a lot of people fell in love with an album (AD or ISM) instead of the band. You guys are going to continue to be disappointed if you are expecting MMJ to make an album identical to a previous one. It's. Not. Going. To. Happen. Period.

Next time an album is released try to let go of your irrational expectations before listening.

This is my first post as well, and I wouldn't necessarily say that my initial reaction is a positive one either.

As of now, this is probably my least favorite MMJ album.  I'm not sure I can qualify it as their "worst" album, objectively speaking, but it probably sits at my least favorite.  But I think the reason for that is it is the first MMJ album I have had any sort of expectations for whatsoever.

I didn't become a fan until shortly after Evil Urges was released, but I wouldn't say that album was my first exposure to them.  I was just told about them by a friend, played a few songs, and being a completist, I bought everything all at once.  As such, I have never had the experience of anticipating what MMJ songs are going to be like before.  I have just consumed them as what they were.

In the time leading up to this album release, I have certainly had an opinion and expectations.  And when you have expectations, you are going to find yourself more disappointed than when you don't as a general rule.  I know I represent a unique portion of the fanbase in that this is the first new album I've been around for, but it certainly hasn't lived up to my expectations (expectations which for the most part were set by hearing the song Circuital, which I loved.)  I think it will grow on me, but aside from Victory March and Circuital, I have been somewhat underwhelmed.

Gotta defend Steve here. He's clearly a big enough fan to be compelled enough to register on a forum. Everyone should be able to express themselves, whether it's a first post or 5000th post (for postaholics like me).

Just from lurking for a week or so, I find yours unoriginal and boring. There are 15 of you on every message board on the internet.

My Monkey Friend

from what people have heard, has there been any pedal steel on circuital?

I would agree if you just changed your statement to read "second post or 5000th post."

If a person was never moved enough in the past to even post one time, why would they do it now?  Just confusing to me is all.
