I was at a Christmas party back in January of 2008 at my brother-in-law's place and he was like "you have to see this." In the middle of the party he puts on the Okonokos DVD for me...I was hooked by the first note of JJ's voice on "Wordless Chorus." Being a big Grateful Dead & Phish fan I loved live music, but when I saw these boys and what they could do on stage...my face melted for the first time. I was hooked by "Wordless Chorus" because it was the first song, but I fell completely in love with this band when I heard "Dondante" & "Steam Engine." It was the biggest musical revelation that I had ever experienced...it was like my ears had heard music for the very first time.
This almost made me cry. Perfect my friend. "Like hearing music again for the first time". I've likened it to that feeling of "First Love".
Why does my mind blow to bits everytime they play that song?

The first CD I owned of there was It Still Moves.  Run Thru I'd say was the first song I really got hooked to.  The whole CD is phenominal but that song inparticularly stuck out to me as just about perfect.
And all that ever mattered will some day turn back to batter, like a joke.

On OKO, when Run-Thru comes on I'm gone Daddy, Gone. That song makes my soul weep with joy.

First song to intrigue me... "Wordless Chorus"
First song to make my eyes grow wide open... "At Dawn"
First song to make me get chills... "Gideon"
First song to make me smile from ear to ear... "The Way That He Sings"

Actually quick side note... the REAL obsession began in earnest on my honeymoon 6 years ago.  I was in Aruba and got up very early to walk along this boardwalk to get breakfast for us.  I had my ipod with me and on the way there the sun was rising and the sky was many shades of pink and blue on the water.  I walked down to the ocean and sat on the beach and listened to "At Dawn".   The rest is history.

Im The Dude

A friend gave me a copy of "At Dawn" back in 2002 or 2003? Loved it. Then saw them on Conan in 2003 and was hooked. Got "It Still Moves" for Christmas that year and was hooked on them ever since.

Wordless Chorus. I heard it on the radio when Z first came out and instantly fell in love. I was aware of Golden prior to this, and though I loved the song I didn't really know who it was by. Then when I heard Off The Record played on the same station I was completely hooked and had to get Z and know everything about the band. Now I have all their albums and consider Okonokos to be one of the best live albums ever released - definitely in my top 5 of personal favorites. So a late bloomer perhaps but I've been completely enamored of the band since 2005.
So, I do believe.....

Strangely enough, one that hasn't been mentioned and doesn't seem to get nearly enough love: Knot Comes Loose.

That is one song I have never seen played live.  Has anyone seen "Knot Comes Loose" played in concert?  I know they've played it before but it's pretty rare.  It is definitely one of my favorite songs.

*raises hand*

They played it at the Fillmore in San Francisco on New Year's Eve's Eve's Eve 12/29/2006.  I had no idea how rare it was at the time.  It was the show that busted my MMJ live cherry.  I even got a setlist at the end of the show.  They played a lot of rare shit that night.  The show started off kind of mellow and ended kinda mellow with a delicious rawky road filling in between:

Intro
Into the Woods (Jim Solo)
I Needed it Most (Jim Solo)
Hopefully (Jim and Carl)
At Dawn
Golden
It Beats 4 U
Gideon
What a Wonderful Man
The Way That He Sings
X-Mas Curtain
Phone Went West
Sooner
Picture of You
I Think I'm Going to Hell
Laylow
One Big Holiday
Magheeta
---------------
Wordless Chorus
Off the Record
I Will Sing You Songs
Run Thru
Anytime
---------------
Knot Comes Loose
By My Car
Butch Cassidy (Jim and Carl)
Bermuda Highway (Jim solo)

There's a decent audio recording here:

Edit:  This board has a problem posting urls from the live archive.  No matter what I do, the link comes out wrong.  So, if you want the show, go to www.archive.org, click on the live music archive and do a search for mmj2006-12-29.

Off The Record and that funky-ass breakdown toward the end.

Knot Comes Loose .... Well, they certainly must have played it at the Terminal 5 complete Z show in October. Maybe it'll make some appearances on the Circuital Tour.

That setlist is insane.  Open with Into the Woods?  Such an underrated tune

That is an intense setlist.  I saw MMJ both during 06 and 08 at Bonnaroo but they still never played "Knot Comes Loose".  I've only seen "Into the woods" once.  Wish they would play both of those songs much more often.

With the exception of "At Dawn" (substitute it with "Touch me Pt 2"), I could have made this exact list. "We're like soul brothers who've been brewing in the same womb stew!" "Mmmmmm... Womb stew... Throw in a piece of bread and forget about it."
Why does my mind blow to bits everytime they play that song?

I said earlier Im not sure if a song really hooked me, and if it was, it was OBH.

If it wasnt OBH, it was Off The Record because I didnt love the Jacket until after Z came out, and Off the Record was definitely the first song that hit me on that album

2006 Camden opening for Pearl Jam. Laylow. Still amazing live.
The Way That He Sings and Smokin from Shootin make me shiver each time I see them live.

Brother Beck

I think it was The Bear.

It's a little fuzzy now, but I think it went like this: in 2006 I read an article in The Boston Globe about some band called My Morning Jacket playing with The Boston Pops.  I went online to check out their music and the first song I remember hearing was Heartbreakin Man.  I loved it and think I bought it from iTunes, but then went to the store to buy the actual Tennessee Fire CD.  I put the CD on and played it and heard The Bear for the first time and it was magic.  That was the song that really got to me.  They have been my favorite band since then.

Nicholas Yames

Being a huge Pearl Jam fan... the "Quick One" video on Imagine in Cornice is how I heard of them... Then hearing Evil Urges (the song) the first time I listened to that album at least 100 times the summer of 2008... Really got into their whole catalog after seeing War Begun on ACL that same year.
and if all else fails, i'll come running back, wonderin where you went
with my heart.
