Ahhh come on, that seems like sensationalism. First of all, this was a tiny article for an upcoming show that selected a few quotes from a greater conversation. Jim James still loves rock music (jesus, look how hard he rocks out) he is just expanding his musical taste. He is allowed to listen to other music haha

this isn't the first time he's said he's sick of rock, or the rock type sound.

Still, this does not mean they will stop rocking.
I like Circuital, but it does NOT rock. They will always rock in concert, but what I got out of this article was he is not into creating rock at this time. I hope it is not permanent.

I still think that you and others need to calm wayyyy down about this - even if Circuital doesn't "rock," that is no indication of future work.
IT'S ALL GOOD.

Relax. It is all good man. MMJ is great because of their varied influences.

*all I am saying is you shouldn't read too much into that snippet of an interview. and that soul music is the dope shit

Although I can generally agree with you, the term "It's all good" is a pet peeve of mine. It is like if you are at a buffet and something taste bad, someone will say, "It's all good", when it clearly is not as good as it could be.

It is what it is

Isn't pretty much everything "what it is"?  I think someone could use that saying at least 50 times a day and no one would call bullshit, they'd just nod and agree.  Yep, you're so right "it is what it is"  You can't ever use that term and not get it right.  I mean, I just really wish "it's not what it is" would catch on.

it isn't what it isn't

so true, so true.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

I'm going to try and use it today, we'll see if it catches.
There's Still Time.........

and woodnymph, you make good points. to me jim has been getting more and more out there.  a little bird told me they were talking to the dbt's after a show on their bus and got into a conversation with them about MMJ.  apparently my morning jacket was at a truckers show and got into a conversation with the band, the member of the band my friend talked to said after jim was done talking they couldn't understand what he was talking about, he's just too far out there to understand these days. from what the little bird tells me, the truckers and mmj have been friends for years so it was an odd exchange.  that's a bad sign.  if he goes all syd barrett or something on us I'll be bummed.  it could be bullshit.  we don't know Jim personally, nor can we read his mind.
was the birdie named Ellis or Hacksaw? Just curious.

That is fucking hilarious.  Tears.

Also, if you guys saw me in my car last weekend at 2 am with First Light blasting on the stereo, you would agree, that Circuital, does indeed, ROCK.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

The weird thing about this is MMJ and DBT were both discovered by me at the same time, and in less than a year they became by far my 2 favorite bands, without me knowing any connection. I ain't no impressionable kid, my 50th is Tuesday.

I discovered MMJ and DBT in 2003.  Within a year they were both in my top 3.  I get to see both in September and can't wait.

i read this entire thread and then read the link expecting jim to sound like some freak.  much ado over nothing.  he's been saying the same stuff for years.

He didn't say ALL rock music is dark; he says:

"Rock music is beautiful and serves a purpose, but so much of it is about pain and darkness."

You're the one making the generalizations and assumptions; you're saying he said something that he didn't say.

no, just because he says it's beautiful and serves it's purpose automatically tells me he thinks of that genre as a lower genre for sure now.  "so much of it" is about pain and darkness I highly disagree with, look at Phish, they're not really about darkness.  look at Ween they're not really dark.   Hendrix wasn't that dark at all.  I think he's dissing rock too hardcore,  rock is what made them famous and now he's almost dilberately trying to avoid so he's not cornholed.  he should embrace the strengths of the band and not focus on highlighting the weaknesses (pedal steel over kill after the last too albums).  it's my opinion I don't anybody in this conversation can claim to be right.

Yes, actually I will claim to be right. He never said anything about "all of rock music."

Not dark at all? I suggest you listen to the album Electric Ladyland. Or maybe Machine Gun from Band of Gypsies. Do I really need to list all the dark Hendrix music?

Hendrix not dark at all?  :-\

Yeah, what ever happened with the book he was writing on the subject?  :)
