So I have to spend the next five weeks in ATL and was hoping some locals could suggest some cool things to do on the weekends, or whenever.  Thanks!

I'm not a local but somewhat familiar.  I highly recommend The Vortex.  Excellent burgers, great atmosphere and superb beer selection.  http://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/

I also recommend the Clermont Lounge.  This is a very unique experience.  It is much better if you have a friend to witness this with you, but might be worth checking out on your own - just to say you did.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clermont_Lounge

I lived in Atlanta for three years.  I second the Vortex suggestion.  Like Jon said, their burgers are great.  There is one in Little Five Points, which is an interesting area to check out shops and walk around.  Since you are there for so long, keep an eye on what shows are coming up at the Variety Playhouse (also in Little Five Points).

Also, downtown Decatur is a cool area to kill some time as well.  MARTA takes you straight there.  If you do go to Decatur, I would suggest a pint of Sweetwater 420 and some grub at Raging Burrito:

The Virginia Highlands is a nice area for shops and food, too:

Two other good music venues are The Tabernacle and Smith's Olde Bar.

I don't know if it's your bag or not, but over the next few weeks it looks like there are some good (depending on your taste) shows in town: MMW, Trey, The Raconteurs, moe., The Whigs, etc.

The Georgia Aquarium is really neat; avoid Underground Atlanta at all costs.

SweetWater Brewery is in Atlanta.  Their 420 Extra Pale Ale is pretty tasty.

Oh, wait...

i went to the tabernacle in February to see a show.  i think everyone should see at least one show there. While i was in Atlanta for the weekend, I went to the Aquarium and World of Coke. I would highly recommend the aquarium just for the whale sharks alone. I didnt care for World of Coke. I ate at Anatolia Cafe and Hookah Lounge, which was delicious and i had the famous burger at Holeman and Finch. SOOO delicious.
