Albums that defied your expecations in 2011

Figured we need to counteract the other thread. I'll start:

Based on the previous album, wasn't sure what to expect, but love these:


Ryan Adams
Blitzen Trapper
TV on the Radio
Dawes
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Dawes
Jason Isbell - his debut was good, liked the new one even better
Hayes Carll - his best yet (imo)
John Hiatt- his best in years.
was some shakin' and some record playin'

Wilco's album gave me hope and proved that they had plenty left in the tank. Their previous two offerings had me wondering...
The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

All 3 were insanely hyped in mags like NME and they all 3 are outstanding.

Gillian Welch.

Beating expectations after waiting 8 years is a pretty good effort...

I could also say Wilco but I've learnt not to have any expectations when it comes to Wilco albums.
At my house, we call them uh-ohs.

Gillian Welch was the first thing that came to my mind as well.  To come back after 8 years and what was in my opinion her worst album (Soul Journey) with something rivaling her best work was great.

The Ryan Adams record was better than I would have expected as well, and in my opinion might be his most consistent record since Heartbreaker.

I'd put Iron in Wine on this list too, just because of how much Sam expanded his sound on their latest one. 

Also The Decemberists because, although I like all their previous records, their new one feels like it touched my soul in a way none of their previous records have.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

Beastie Boys "Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2"
Foo Fighters "Wasting Light"
Mastodon "The Hunter"
Motorhead "The World Is Yours"
