The dynamic wasn't as playful as MOF, but it worked. Anders commands the stage but Jay really stole the show for me. It helped that I was right in front of him but when he sings and plays, there's just something rootsy and solid, I'd never seen him before and was really impressed. Jim and Will had fun jamming together and Anders joined in a few times. Jim's hair was having an amazing night, seriously. I think it's the best I've ever seen it, I almost couldn't concentrate on the songs.

TSarge--sorry we missed ya. I was on the lookout the couple times I went back there...Saw Ghosts friends from T5 on my way back up front!

Brooke--we talked to BBJr after the show and I'm gonna be mad if it's JIM who's the guest...he was hammered and offering to sleep on our couches (lol). I was giving him hell for having a house party on a week night. If I wasn't so hung over, I'd probably go.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Another review:  http://houselist.bowerypresents.com/2012/03/15/this-jam-is-your-jam/

While the stage was loaded with talent last night show at Webster Hall, the real MVP might have been the lone roadie/guitar tech. The crowd watched this guy tune about a zillion guitars—acoustic, electric, bass—getting the stage ready. It was an impressive feat and all that work was absolutely necessary because  every single instrument was used to its fullest extent over the course of an awe-inspiring show. This was a modern day supergroup playing music written to accompany unfinished lyrics and writings of Woody Guthrie. The band is Jay Farrar (Son Volt, et al.), Anders Parker (Gob Iron, et al.), Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic, et al.), who nominally played rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass and drums respectively.

They performed with a communal spirit that would have made Guthrie proud, sharing lead vocals and swapping roles throughout the night. As far as supergroups go, this one is about halfway between Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Blind Faith, matching hefty harmonies with all-out rock and roll. The first part of the show was expected as the band rolled through all the material on New Multitudes. It was great to watch each member take the lead role and see the others transform into a backing band in the style of that leader. So that Farrar's opener, "Hoping Machine," embraced Son Volt's twang-with-grit feel while James's "My Revolutionary Mind" had a distinct MMJ arc, starting with a focus on his voice and then exploding into a flesh-crawling rock jam. Practically every permutation of two-, three- and four-part harmonies were realized, with each voice distinctly on its own making powerful music together. My personal highlight was "Chorine My Sheba Queen" with James sweetly harmonizing with Johnson's lead vocal while Parker and Farrar beautifully laid down atmospheric drum-melody behind them.

The set lasted about an hour, and the crowd, which had been a perfect balance of enthusiastic and attentive all night, howled for an encore. What they got in return would better be described as a full-on second set as each member played a solo acoustic tune of his own, capped by James's spine-tingling sing-along version of "Wonderful (The Way I Feel)." Again the show felt satisfyingly complete, but the band wasn't yet finished, as each member highlighted another of his songs with the whole band in tow, each seemingly topping the previous in a playful we-rock-harder competition. As the "encore" reached the hour mark, the band played a ninth song with every member taking lead for a verse. What followed was a blistering, jammy  rock out with noisy guitar interplay shaking Webster Hall that went on in glorious feedback, surely exactly the way Woody Guthrie diagrammed it many years ago, until each musician left the stage one at a time to rousing applause (and a nod to the guy who had to tune all those guitars). —A. I'm so glad you guys all enjoyed BBJ!   It makes me so happy.    He's been doing those house shows for a year or so know.   I've seen him about 4-5 times but I missed the local house show he did.    They sound like a lot of fun and I guarantee he will stick around and drink all your beer afterwards!    What a great showman he is.    How am I not surprised that Christine talked to him?    :)

Here is one more NON-house show up in that are if you want to see him again on Saturday.   Where is Islip?

MARCH 17 – ISLIP, NY – Grey Horse Tavern – with Carey Kotsionis
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

It was a treat to be with Penny, Headhunter, ericm, Brooke, and Tired Eyes, and also to meet someone who we hope will be joining the forum.  A lovely lad from Ireland (in NY for 14 yrs now) who has been seeing the band since they opened for the Doves in 01, and has been to all NYC shows since then - including all of T5 (even after his twin daughters were born on the Sunday before the shows started).

i think bluesky was at that show, too!

I wish I had been at that Doves show, shit...I really liked that Doves record and the following day my friend Greg said he saw this band open for The Doves (i was upset hearing i missed the Doves) that he thought I would really like and described them as such they're all barefoot and longhaired haha.... Eric and Brooke, Greg is the guy I introduced you to outside of the PHJB show at Carnegie Hall.

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

i thought the show was really cool yesterday.  me and my buddy were about 10 feet away from jim, so that was awesome...never really seen him preform that close before.  best part of the night was prior to the show starting, i was at the bar waiting for my buddy to get out of work....lo and behold i see some dude with a scruffy beard walking across the street, haha...i ran to my waitress, told her i'd be right back...dashed across the street and it was mr. james....he was very cool, very humble, was able to snag a picture with him which was awesome.

all in all, good times yesterday.

I was 10 feet in front of Jim at the L.A. show. Did he ever open his eyes in the opening set? He either had his eyes close, hair covering his face, or back to the crowd with 2 tiny exceptions the first half. Then after the encore he was looking directly at fans and smiling for the rest of the show. He seems like the kind of guy where he is totally aware of what he is doing, and everything he does is for a reason.
