So, The Monkey Wrench is about 3 miles from Galt House- a short drive but not exactly walking distance.  I'm flying in and won't have a car.  Is TARC any good for getting around?  How late will they run?

you know i havnt been on a tarc bus since probably high school, so i am no authority.  not even sure where by the galt you could catch it or where by the wrench it would drop you off.  i however, could not imagine it would be too hard of a trip to make.  maybe even without transfers.  otherwise, it would probably only be a $6-$7 (maybe $10) cab ride, which if you split it up a few ways wouldnt be too much more than the bus.

CABS! The Galt will call you a cab and they're cheap. Plus you just call them when you're ready to be picked up. It'll be dirt cheap with all of us staying there.

I'm envisioning a long line of peeps at the hotel cab stand, much like at the airport...no riding in the cargo area, Ruckus! Or was that me?  :-\
Makes sense.  This here NH hick has only been in a cab maybe twice in my 44 years.

No lines. Just call down to the front desk a few min before you're ready to go. I haven't had a car in 10 years, trust me, you're in good hands. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?  ;) ;D
Some of us will have cars too. I will probably be in a van and I don't plan on consuming lots of alcohol due to health issues I have; although there will be times when I will not be able to drive anyone anywhere. ;)

Girl talk will play the main stage followed by MMJ.

I hope not. Girl Talk is a miserable highschool dance party with the volume turned up too loud.

however with these pit passes we don't have to be early for GT

Too bad Girl Talk can't be a late night show. It can be quite a fun show for those of you who enjoy it.  It will be a weird act leading into MMJ, but not as weird as Trey Songz. The crowd will get so ramped up that they may crash before MMJ.

There FIFY!

So will there be other stages playing during the headliners or is it like Roo where everything shuts down during the HLs? How many stages are there?

Thanks for the reply wind. I'm doing some theoretical schedule making!

Thanks again!!

Damn E, now you're answering my questions before I can even type them!!  The force is strong with you.  I'd love that particular setup.  Hope that's the direction they go this year.

If I recall from 2010, there was a little overlap between the main stage (Great Lawn) and second stage (Wharf), at least on Sunday.  I remember that Against Me! was playing opposite Wilco, but not for the entire time of Wilco's set.

And in the 2010 set up, the second stage viewing area wasn't that small.  The main stage was on the huge Great Lawn, but the second stage was on the Wharf (on the other side of the boat slip at Waterfront Park).  It's a narrow grassy strip that goes pretty deep from the stage, and is where the local public radio station hosts its once-a-month free concerts in the summer, which draw crowds several-thousand strong on Wednesday nights.  It's nowhere near the capacity of the Which Stage at Bonnaroo, but then again, the main stage is not nearly the capacity of the gargantuan What Stage, either.

i didn't want to complain but when i read that this morning..i thought ...well that SUCKS ?! We're gonna be down front for all those mashups... that should have  been a later night set or on a different stage...weird/bad set placements... that's a get hammered, dance around and sweat till you can't move show? they need to CHANGE THAT.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

maybe that's why the band was so adamant about people with pit passes being the only people in the pit. we won't have to worry about being up front for girl talk.

If the weather's nice, why can't one walk? I like to get a feel for cities by walking them. What say you, locals? Or is this plan the most likely way for me to not make an appearance?

it is certainly walk-able (about an hour), however your route choice may take you through some less than desirable areas.  that being said, the ville is pretty safe and if you are with a group of people, you shouldnt have any worries... or you will all get mugged at once!?

the last mile or so is all up hill as well... actually, coming from the river the whole trip more or less will be uphill.

Ok so I'll take it as not walkable in the bigger picture. Since the wife and I are going extended stay to just take in everything in addition to the festie, I didn't know if I'd be missing an opportunity. We walked all over Portland ME when we were there, prob 6-7 miles when all was said and done, but we did find ourselves in some less-than-desirable spots late at night.

yeah its doable, but you really wont get a feel for louisville by walking it. you'll walk through a poor neighborhood, thats about it. theres no point in louisville that you could end up in between the waterfront, the highlands, u of l's campus, and churchill downs that would be an immediate threat to your well being. there are bad areas, but theyre further west for the most part, that being said there are areas immediately downtown like shepherds square that i wouldnt walk around in alone or even with a single friend.

if you like to walk about chode, you should walk around the area within 5 or so blocks of the event, then take a cab to the highlands and walk around Barret Ave (the monkey wrench locatiaon), and Baxter Ave/Bardstown Road. Other than that I'd say the one tourist-ish thing to do thats well worth it is Churchchill downs. I've lived in louisville my whole life and have spent 95% of my time here in a couple square mile radius (downtown plus the highlands) and unitversity of louisvilles campus. Clifton area (Frankfort Avenue) is nice, but its very similar to the highlands, with less businesses.

and anything that is any further than that is all Strip Mall Land so don't worry about it.
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...
