Ill line some cabs up for that day.  We have access to a couple of van taxis and they can make circles. Ill research the tarc route and find out if it is worth it.

So, The Monkey Wrench is about 3 miles from Galt House- a short drive but not exactly walking distance.  I'm flying in and won't have a car.  Is TARC any good for getting around?  How late will they run?

If the weather's nice, why can't one walk? I like to get a feel for cities by walking them. What say you, locals? Or is this plan the most likely way for me to not make an appearance?

it is certainly walk-able (about an hour), however your route choice may take you through some less than desirable areas.  that being said, the ville is pretty safe and if you are with a group of people, you shouldnt have any worries... or you will all get mugged at once!?

the last mile or so is all up hill as well... actually, coming from the river the whole trip more or less will be uphill.

Ok so I'll take it as not walkable in the bigger picture. Since the wife and I are going extended stay to just take in everything in addition to the festie, I didn't know if I'd be missing an opportunity. We walked all over Portland ME when we were there, prob 6-7 miles when all was said and done, but we did find ourselves in some less-than-desirable spots late at night.

Most midwestern cities are not set up to be walker friendly outside of a mile radius or so...these bars are spread out...if you wanna stick to going out downtown, there's the cheesy bunch of bars (Hard Rock Cafe, etc) but I think we should venture out...Portland ME is tiny, nothing like L-ville..

Im debating grabbing tickets for Saturday only, will probably drive down from Indy solo mid a.m... thinking the econo lodge downtown as its cheap... As much as I'd love to stay at the Gault house I dont work in the hotel industry anymore and dont get the awesome discount.... Anyone else going stag that wants to start an impromptu street gang?

There are good bars downtown. 2 BBC locations, Impalezaris, Bearnos, etc. You can't go to 4th street live where hard rock is. Please promise me you won't go to hard rock

Yeah, since the opening of the KFC Yum! Center arena in fall 2010 (after the last Forecastle Festival), a new crop of locally-owned bars and restaurants has sprouted on Main Street near 2nd, just up the street from Waterfront Park (and closer to it than the chain businesses in 4th Street Live).  There is plenty to do near the waterfront these days: Patrick O'Shea's, Impellizeri's, Doc Crow's, BBC, Troll Bar Under the Bridge, to name a few.

And then there's the NuLu district on East Market Street, one block south of Main and a few blocks east from Waterfront Park and the nearby hotels: lots of interesting local restaurants, galleries and shops.  Downtown is really revitalized, and visitors now have a lot more to do in the general vicinity of the sports and convention attractions.

Does Brandon Jones have a shop, studio, or somesuch?  I've been hoping to meet him after corresponding a bit last year.  He did the KFC Yum poster, the Montreal 11, the AppVox poster, and has his hands in Okonokos (as A. Man), Forecastle (as the Cap'n), Unstaged (as H. Man), and the Black Metal video.  I'm guessing he'll be all over Forecastle but wonder if he has a space with more of his art and such.

Here's his site.

seconded......i beg of all you visitors, please don't spend (waste) your time and money at 4th street live.   there are so many better, locally-owned bars and restaurants for you to enjoy.

C'mon,  No TGI Fridays love or Applebees  ;) .

I'm really excited about this trip. I can't wait to meet everybody that I've crossed paths with on this electronic highway since joing this community a long time ago. And get to see some old friends again.

Part of the reason I walk everywhere is to get a feel for the city that isn't on a Frommer's to-do list of touristy crap. One time in Madrid I accidentally walked clear across the city because I kept doing "oh, that looks neat" and drifting in said direction.

Going to hard rock is about as useful to me as going to a bar with only macrobrews
I'm surrounded by assholes

;D I've been kinda wondering if my "MMJ" sticker is a good idea, being a teacher and all...  Anyone ever determine if, all silly stories aside, "My Morning Jacket" has always been a reference to weed?  Y'know, kinda like the "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" bit...

In addition to referring to the best band in the universe, MMJ is also a common acronym for medical marijuana. So maybe watch it with those stickers when the principal comes around.  ;D

I get way more of a Michigan Math Journal vibe out of the band than Medical Marijuana.
