Someone post here as soon as they know about the after shows. Those are going to be a big convincing point for me

I attended in 2010 and I wasn't aware of any after shows. There could have been some, but I didn't know of them if they did happen. Except I seem to remember The Avett Brothers playing a short set on top of a crane or something. I might be just making that up.

As for convincing...I would just say go for it. The line up is great and I think we're going to see a lot of Jim playing with the other acts, not just the ones he is his being billed for. I also imagine we will get some guests during Jackets set as well (Ben Sollee, Pres Hall Band, Conor Oberst). It's a very laid back festival. Relatively small crowds compared to other summer festivals. It is a bit of a trek from Louisville, but it is well, well worth it.

In 2011 deer tick did 3 after shows with tons of guests. Theyre doing it again I know. Wether I can get tickets for them is a deciding factor for me. The flight+hotel is what I haven't been convinced on yet. Living  in central America this summer for a month, so money's tight
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...

Hey Eric I was busting your balls a bit and maybe giving you the push off the fence if it helped.   Newport is a budget buster for sure and if you have to fly to get here that's even worse.

Seriously though, tix for the Deer Tick shows did not go on sale until the Tues before the festival (7/26 according to my credit card statement, and I bought them the second they went on sale).    So if you are waiting to see if you get tix, that may not work.   It was a bit of a shit show.    I think anyone trying should try and get 4 and sort them out later.

Maybe it won't be so last minute this time since they seem to be planning a bit more in advance.   Last time they were $15 too which may not happen.   I'm all for keeping ticket costs down but that contributed to the frenzy.

The Friday night show is held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. You have to buy a separate ticket for this night. When I went in 2010, Steve Martin played with Steep Canyon Rangers. It's outdoors and very intimate. Totally worth going to if you like whose playing that evening.

And- as if there weren't enough tickets to buy- there is also a Sat evening BBQ at 7:30 which bridges the time between end of festival (7:15 pm) and late shows (11:15 pm last year).   I did not go but reviews from people I know were good.  Lots of musicians hanging out.   Some good youtube floating around.

This roll call is lookin better and better! July cannot get here soon enough!
Amen, Trish.  Two fests within two weeks with epic roll calls.

This NFF roll call is shaping up much stronger, I think, than 2010.  I know jYac and his spawn and I and the ms were there.  Were any other forum folks there in 2010?

I was also there in 2010 but wasn't a member of the forum at that point.

these are on sale today and there are only 250.

$135/each is awfully steep on top of an already expensive weekend.   But, if sitting under a tent with 20 "wedding-type" round tables, sharing food and drinks with the artists and watching them take turns hopping up to play songs sounds like fun, I'd consider how to find a way to make it happen.   Espec since the lineup this year is MMJ, dawes, deer tick, brown bird, alabama shakes, etc on Sat.

It will sell out fast.    Last year it sold out in 3 days and, if like everything else, it'll be faster this year.

Br00ke? Penny?

someone asked on facebook what it was about and here was someone else's response:

It was a very intimate event in a tent behind the main stage with dozens of artists playing whatever came to mind on a small stage. Last year it was about 3.5 hours of non-stop awesome music complemented by an open bar & buffet. Don't question - just get a ticket. It was the best thing I did last year.

johnnYYac

I'd be all over it but for the pricetag and ticket limit.  I'm coming Saturday with my Mom, sister, and three little girls ages 8-10, so its a no go.  Definitely would do if not for the baggage.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

MrWhippy

Thanks very much for the heads up, Kyle.

I spent a while balking at the price, then caved in and grabbed two for me and the mister.

Of the crazy things MMJ makes me do, I will have to add being a vegetarian who just bought a $140 ticket for a barbecue to the list.

Also, FYI, the NFF twitter feed says that the BBQ tix are almost sold out.

My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

This may be the best thing I've read all day! Very funny, Whippy! ;D

Awesome!  It'll be good to see a familiar face.    Thought your comment was great and gave me a chuckle-  I am a vegetarian too and so in the same boat.    I shot a comment to them requesting vegetarian options...

This is a fun read to kill the time while you enjoy the 80 degree weather and dream of Newport.   Good paragraph at the end about the bbq.

I got a ticket and could care less about the food!!  This sounds way too awesome and unique to miss.  Mahg33ta...... I owe you a beer or veggie burger for alerting me/us to this ticket sale.  I would never have learned about it otherwise.  I am in for Saturday day but not on the roll call list as I am + ?

Now I'm likely + 0 with this added event, but I am stoked.  Looking forward to seeing you again in RI and Mr. Whippy as well, who I met briefly at the Birchmere last week.

mahg33ta

No prob - glad to help.   Damn that sold out fast.    It'll be good to see you again too- see if my wife recognizes you from your DVD again lol.

Here is a little more info about the event... doesn't seem to be a link to this from the newport website but if you go straight to http://www.newportfolkfest.net/benefit it works.   Drinks are free, so I will do my best to get my $$ worth.

CountSA

I'm going back and forth about getting weekend tix or just Saturday...Carl, New Multitudes, and Conor Oberst are the only acts I'm really interested seeing on that day.
