Mr Whippy-  when I saw you had posted in this thread, I was sure you were going to be mentioning when you and I were fighting for the rail in Forecastle w/ Andrew Bird.   Now THAT was a long set.

Quite possibly the longest 90 minutes of my life.  I didn't really think of that as an opening band for MMJ as it being a festival, but if I do think of it that way, that takes the cake as the worst for me by far.  If there is a soundtrack to Hell, Andrew Bird will provide the whistling.

Kyle, you bringing up our fight up at the rail at Forescastle reminded me of your response to the young girl trying to squeeze in front of you.

Girl to Kyle - "Do you mind if is squeeze in front of you?"
Kyle to Girl - "Yes, very much."

Classic.

Ah I remember that! I was the kid in front of you by the way. I'm with Fully, there is NO way that the Andrew Bird set was only 90 minutes. It was horrible.

Well lets just go ahead and end this discussion right now.  Worst. Opener. Ever.  I dare somebody to try and top this one...

But the reason why I came here was to bring this up but I see someone already beat me to it. That is still one of the strangest and worst pairings I've ever heard of.

i agree worst pairing ever...but i waited at the front of the line from 3:30 on with some of the funniest, most hardcore black women i have ever met in my life...trey's angels

Fully

Seth, does that make you one of Trey's Angel's too?

I know that, silly.  You're very easy to pick out in the Forecastle webcast, but the way, if you haven't noticed.

I couldn't remember if I ever told you my name on here. And my parents are quite.... proud?....of my frequent appearance on the Forecastle webcast

It was horrible, but I'll never forget the 10 minutes he spent complimenting all the girls on their outfits. "Baby Girl, I see you in that yellow skirt. Looking Good."

Yeah, I love people who then respond with "mmj is my favorite band!!" like that should grant them access.   What do they think we've been standing there all day for?

I hope Andrew Bird was worth not joining me for the Bourbon tent and Futurebirds

I can't believe all the knocks on Andrew Bird?    Really?   When did this happen?   I love that guy.

The Futurebirds, however, wear also amazing.   I saw half and half.

I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

I was watching the webcast and thought I would dig Andrew Bird...but it was painful.  Blergh.
anything + reverb always = better

You guys should watch the DVD that came with his new CD.   I think you would get a better idea of the genius of the Bird.    I do wish he would go back to just him and Dosh instead of the big band but still, something's definately wrong with your guys ears.

The last club tour MMJ had (through my area, Boston) a now defunct band called the Slip opened for MMJ. They were a former jazzy jam band which switched gears to a more indie sound. I used to follow the Slip (prob close to 30 shows) and may be a bit biased but it was a dream combo for me. I saw them open for MMJ at the Avalon in Boston, knowing it would prob be the last time MMJ play a club and it was on my bday!  Additionally the Slip closed out the MMJ Boston Pops show and I stood next to Jim James as he watched them from the shadows of the lower level lobby of the Boston Symphony Hall.

Also:
-saw Dr. Dog open for them in 2004, 1st time hearing them, toothbrush just came out.
-Neko Case was great, as was Kathleen Edwards.

I am jealous of those who got to see Portugal. the Man open, that's a great double billing right there.

I join the masses in thinking Deertick, J. Roddy and the Biz, and the Futurebirds each need to open.

Andrew Bird is indeed a very talented musician.  If he's playing by himself and looping sounds, then I can see why people are complaining since it takes a lot of time to record the music.  But if you get beyond that and listen to his music, it's very good and you can hear just how talented he is.

Best= Trey Songz (I was actually listening to him years before MMJ)/ Band of Horses
Worst= Andrew Bird

semi-defunct.  They play at High Sierra music fest almost every year still.

I love Andrew Bird, too, but I can see why some don't dig him; his lyrics are pretty deep and his musicianship is so above the regular bands that come around, he often confuses people who aren't used to listening to sophisticated music.

Never underestimate the  power of patience and having an open mind.

I like Bird as background music, but he's not something I enjoy listening to very often. Maybe a song here and there. Perhaps one day I'll be sophisticated enough to like him. I don't dispute that he is talented; I just don't enjoy his music - particularly right before I'm going to watch MMJ...actually I really have no desire to see him perform again. Twice is enough Bird in my lifetime.
