THe moving apostrophe takes that word from literal to figurative.

God's = belonging to God, that old bugger up there in heaven beloved by many. Gods' = owned by vices, those vicious gods of lust, fame, success (without effort), etc. Eventually those gods demand payment for what they've given. If it's Gods' Man, it implies he's enslaved to his unchecked desires.
The apostrophe is definitely at the end (see book cover pix above) and the story line follows along your second description. How did you know that a slight shift of the apostrophe could make all that difference?

However, I thought the Faustian bargain he made for a special brush to allow him to produce masterpiece paintings was with the Devil not a "god".  In any case, whoever that dude was, he came a calling at the end with contract in hand and the final couple of woodcuts weren't that pretty.

It's a common literary device to figuratively describe vices as "gods". So, the devil character is not a "god",  the fame he gives is the "god".

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

learning a lot from this thread...from all the posts..

I've learned quite a lot from this thread as well, Miss Penny Lane.  Dare to say a life-changing amount.  The reflexive relationship between life and art, particularly that of Mr. James and the wonderful heroes in My Morning Jacket, so coincidentally coincides with my cold insides...that I feel as though I am inside some kind of holographic museum, where all the pictures are visions giving me deja vu.  Some would call it Voodoo Kung Fu...I let it do what it do like Erykah Badu...but any way you cut it, it's got my head spinning around...no vacuum sound upon this hallowed (is it hallowed like in the "Our Father" or hollowed like "empty"?) ground.

I seriously think that given the caliber of talent and brainwavery on this Forum, that we should do a collective graphic novel about our superheroes. Mr. Blankenship could help write it, too. I bet all the boys would help. It is my belief that if we started a collective storyline using the evolution of the band as seen through the fans, it would make a Marvel-ous volume of work. And it would be collective like The Smurfs.  And every tour, we'd publish a new volume...so that the action of the Spontaneous Curation is really unfolding before your eyes.  And every person in attendance is a character, an artist, and a storyteller. Like what if after every show, people posted stories and drawings and poems and weird little non-sequitors and we mashed 'em all together into a living online album?

Sorry. I've been writing serious shit all day, and needed a mental break to be a weirdo.  Thanks in advance.

I'm so confused.
So those butt-chuggers over in the Port Chester PARTY post are "gods"?

LeanneP

If you could buttchug, do you not think you'd deserve godhood?! <-- Sorry, no enema smilies

Sorry for being so off topic, but this makes as much sense to me as some of this thread: Leanne, your statement made me wonder,

How much butt could a butt chugger chug,if a butt chugger could chug butt?

I will now turn this thread back over to the topic. Leanne, I enjoyed your point about the apostrophe. I've been "reading" this book myself. The jury is still out for me. So far all I can tell is that I don't really enjoy novels that are all in woodcut and the amazement over it has not struck me yet. I'm waiting to be struck senseless at the wonder of it, but it hasn't struck me yet. I'll give it another, more close reading soon.  However, I am still enjoying the song although I haven't been as profoundly moved by it as it has been reported here to have occurred. In truth, i would prefer not to be so moved by one song because this love of this music is already too much to bear at times.

Troll much...

I'll try to wait till it's released before I start bashing it, of course I'll probably have to since I won't hear it until then, but thanks for crapping on it before I even hear it.

Love the single, will be shocked if my reaction to the overall album is negative.  I guess a 'meh' is possible, but only time will tell...

From your description it sounds like I'm going to love it!  Thanks, can't wait till it comes out, much more excited now.  It's also reassuring that I completely disagree with your current overall assessment of the band, so that helps too.  If you dislike it that much, chances are I am gonna really like it.  People have different tastes I guess, as much as I love Run thru and guitar driven rock, I really love other stuff too.  Can't wait to hear Jim's new direction in full for myself.
