Curious to c if anybody attended both 3 night runs & if so..do they favor either or and for what reasons.

i gotta believe from the feel of it Wiltern took it slightly.

I know a couple of people who  were at both runs, but I never even thought to ask. I was just a tad envious that I wasn't one of them!

I too got the sense that the Wiltern reviews were more superlative ("mindblowing, best ever" etc)  but I'm curious too.   It might be that us East Coasters are just a bit more spoiled w/ more opportunities.    There were definitely people at both I can think of so I hope someone chimes in.

And I was also waiting for someone with a lot of time on their hands to do a statistical breakdown comparing the runs, e.g. how many songs per show and for each run overall, what got played in LA and not in NY and vice versa, etc etc.  I know there are folks on this forun who are all over that kind of thing!

I wasn't at the Wiltern, but I saw some of the other real standout shows this year (Forecastle, Red Rocks 1 and 2, Merriweather).  I'd put Port Chester Night 3 in the league with all of those.  Not saying better than, but in the same league.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

I was at 2 of the Wiltern nights, not at PC though.  I thought Red Rocks was a teeny bit better than Wiltern - maybe because of the novelty of the "no repeats", the special venue, long shows etc.  But these Port Chester bootlegs are amazing and I think every bit as good as the Wiltern shows.  Who was at both - Ms Y? Tubetop? Exist10z?

exist10z

Yep, at both  I am a lucky man indeed.

Not sure how to compare.  The Wiltern being first just gives it an edge, same sort of edge jaye describes with RR, I suppose there is a special-ness about a multi-day run that can only be experienced once, or once in awhile.  Port Chester was amazing.  But the Wiltern is sticking with me more.  We'll have to see how the shows play out in my mind too, and after listening to the downloads.  Carried Away and Honest Man are jumping out as highlights at Port Chester.

I saw the first two nights of the Wiltern, and all three Port Chester nights.  Both runs were awesome, but conversely PC stuck with me more - but I suspect that's because I was jetlagged as hell in LA and I didn't see all three nights.  Looking forward to listening to the PC shows again (after my download codes are resolved).

Fully

As someone who has listened to both tapes and was present at Port Chester, I would just like to mention that Funky Improv Jam was not played for the first time at the Wiltern. Nor did they do that great outro jam on Outta My System. And I'm pretty sure that Jim morphed into Jerry during Phone on Friday night - even though on NYE it was even better and I'm still partial to the first time I heard it played this way at Red Rocks.

I was only at Port Chester but I did download the Wiltern shows.  I've never been to the Wiltern, but I can't imagine it could compare to the awesomeness of the Capitol.  I mean, the mind numbing incredible sound at the Cap is enough in and of itself, but then there was that freaking incredible light show dancing on the ceiling???   :cheesy:  How can the Wiltern beat that???

And as Fully pointed out, there were a TON of added jams to songs during the Port Chester run that added even more to these shows!

I think PC night three was the show of the year that I saw and I think right up there with Radio City in 08 as my favorite all time, but there was no RR or Wiltern for me.  As great as MPP was as a stand alone date, probably in my top 3 jacket shows ever itself, the extended jams especially on War Begun were just epic.  I really can't wait to hear these downloads once they fix the problems with the Roll call tickets.  Forecastle was great, but I was also sick so that doesn't really help my memories of that one.

Listen I wasn't at Wiltern nor was I at all 3 PC nights. But Night One was the best concert I've ever seen. Hands down. Beats out 'Roo 06 and NYE '09 and Forecastle and any of the other dozens of shows I've been to. We crossed some line during that night - in to a new realm. To me, it's my level of Hunter Thompson's "beautiful wave". Songs weren't played in the same way they always have and they played a true "fan's set" in my opinion - a level of awareness that indicates to me they're starting to become self-aware.

Agree with this (Somewhat!) hands down one of the best ever. After Night 1, I wondered how they would top that. It was special...brought out the oldies, kept the newiest to a minimum...great covers...Strangulation was so intense...I'm pretty sure Ruckus peed his pants.

True story.

Obviously I wasn't at the Wiltern and no repeats wasn't as novel having done T5.  But this was my first time at Capitol Theater and I can't say enough about that place.  They did everything right!  Sloped carpeted floor, amazing lighting and projection system, smoking area, bars everywhere and off course the impeccable sound.  Only issue was the urinals made for stick figures.  Could only go three wide on the five urinals or stagger your distance.  People in the 1930's must have been real skinny or their penises were connected to their hips.

I appreciate the big chart, but it's hard to read. Here's the differences between the 3 night runs:

Wiltern: Picture Of You, Hopefully, Rollin Back, Isn't It A Pity, Rock The Casbah, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, Oh Sweet Nuthin, Move On Up

vs.

PC: The Bear, Nashville To Kentucky, Bermuda, Movin Away, Sooner, Welcome Home, Where To Begin, Octoplasm

ms. yvon

i was one of the lucky assholes able to see both 3 night runs but i can't give you any comments on which was better.  having a difficult time quantifying that statement without sounding like a drip.
"Hell" in la was astounding.  kicked my ass.  whew.  maybe i'll have to compare my notes from both runs.
