That Wilco has been going on longer than MMJ this tour? WTF??? MMJ should never be the opener. Really brings down my excited for this tour. Wilco kind of sucks bro.

Jaimoe

Wilco are a more famous band with hit albums and a larger following. Plus, they have a 20-year legacy. MMJ's sets are marginally shorter, which isn't too bad given they aren't well known in the mainstream.

It's been a while since we got hacksaw'd!

wilco will never open for MMJ.. I love MMJ but wilco have a bigger legacy, more classic albums and a larger fan base. Wilco can fill larger venues than MMJ.

Well I was only referring to this trolling thread of his.

I mean, I guess you can consider this trolling but I really feel this way. Seriously though, what are these "classic albums" ??? Does that mean they were Grammy nominated or highly reviewed by Rolling Stones? I would put up At Dawn or It Still Moves against anything in Wilco's discography. Like who cares though. MMJ is way better at live music. The only Wilco song I really like is California Stars.

As for Bobby D... I saw him once and it was terrible. I'll give him another go since he is a living legend, but i'm sure we'll leave midway through his set. It's unbearable.

The last four Wilco albums cracked Billboard's Top 5. Yankee Foxtrot went Gold in the US. Combined, Wilco has sold millions of CDs. Their concerts are huge draws. I'm a much bigger MMJ fan, but Wilco deserves props.

I'm with you that the first three or even four MMJ albums are as good as any Wilco album, but none have even come close to Gold.

bartel

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is considered generally as one of if not the best albums of the last 15 years. That alone plus very good albums ghost is born and summerteeth for starters... I love both bands I also agree that MMJ are better live but it's a different experience with both bands live.

I'd imagine payday/contracts play a role in set length too...

I know I shouldn't even post in this thread, but don't all acts play for ~75 minutes? Or at least MMJ and wilco. Bob may play longer. The opener definitely is shorter.
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...

I thought I heard something early on about mixing up the order of the bands.  Clearly that's not happening!
anything + reverb always = better

Clearly.

As much as I love (read: am obsessed with, worship at the altar of, etc) MMJ, Wilco are kind of in a slightly different category. Fuck, Tweedy, with Farrar et al, created a modern genre! Dude is a deeply important songwriter in the entire scheme of modern music.  And yes, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was a massively important album, propelling Wilco even farther into the stars. It transcends the genre Tweedy helped create.

That being said, I thought their Toronto show was a tiny bit flat after MMJ's rollercoaster ride of awesome.  The slow songs were a bit wishy washy, the challenging songs were a bit too challenging and possibly just not enough classics. MMJs set didn't seem to lose momentum even when it slowed down for such tunes at Slow Slow Tune and when it revved, it revved on all cylinders.

I know we had heard scuttlebutt that there would be rotating headliners but did anyone really think anyone but Dylan would be headlining?!
Babe, let's get one thing clear, there's much more stardust when you're near.

APR

Last summer both bands headlined amphitheaters in the D.C. area.  Wilco played two nights at Wolf Trap and maybe sold out both.  MMJ didn't sell out MPP in their one night there.  But for my money, MMJ is the best band on the planet, and I would definitely prefer a longer set on this tour.  That being said, I'm still very much looking forward to seeing Wilco for the first time.

Jaimoe

Look at it this way, if Jimi Hendrix were alive today, he'd still be Dylan's opening act.
