Fuck, Tweedy, with Farrar et al, created a modern genre!

They rode the alt-country second-wave more than created the genre. The pioneers of the genre are from the '80s: The Jayhawks, Cowboy Junkies and others. It gets kinda blurry with reference to history and timeframe I think because the music made back then remains so fresh.

I very much admire My Morning Jacket for opening up the shows.  For the following reasons:

first - eveidently they are confident enough to play first, second, third or where ever they can fit in.  In addition, I like to think that it was nice of Wilco and Dylan to "Close for the Jacket"  That's the way I look at it.

second - they've been touring their asses off the past couple of years and if you include  Jim's solo shows, then they are certainly due for a long vacation, and not just one big holiday in Mexico, but a huge somewhere out of the way vacation.  So playing earlier unfortunately, makes their time on stage shorter.  I told my friend who was seeing them for the first time at Toyota park that the set list was more like one of thier encore sets.  All this being said, maybe they like chilling out a bit after their set and checking out the venue, people, fans etc.

third - set list duration...yep Wilco's was longer, but I was in the pit for MMJ and to me even if they play one song, it's worth seeing them.  I don't feel like I got gypped, because in the past - especially Forecastle last year - I got to see them play for the better part of 3 hours.  They would never intentionally gyp any fans.  They are truly a giving band.  They give so much of themselves to their fans that I hope that we all know that if it's one song or a hunred songs by them (my miracle wish) they're the band to see, they are the band to hear and they are the band that gives energy to their fans who in return sends it right back at them right Jim, Carl, Pat, Bo and Tommy?  You get what you give.  I get so much happiness from them such a righteous musical feeling that it is hard to put into words.  Their music moves my soul.

fourth - What can I say?  I love them and I'll go see any and all shows that I can. So I can't be pissed at them but bummed a little that they couldn't play a killer 3 hour show.

I love this topic, because I felt the same way at first and had a real attitude because MMJ was opening for Wilco. In the ATL the MMJ set was great but then Wilco came on and I was like daaaaaayaaaam. Never been a big Wilco fan, but I get it now. I get it.

Breaking news, but MMJ are not the opening act; Richard Thompson or Bob Weir are.

Let's not forget the easy on the eyes and talented Ryan Bingham.

dmmjb

do we know what time mmj has been hitting the stage at these shows?

wilco will never open for MMJ.. I love MMJ but wilco have a bigger legacy, more classic albums and a larger fan base. Wilco can fill larger venues than MMJ.

This is an interesting topic.  I actually really like both bands, but admit to being a MMJ homer.  I have seen both bands at similar venues, drawing similar crowds.  That said, I saw MMJ at Madison Square Garden a few years ago, Wilco could never play a venue that large.  I know that may have just been a one time thing, but is worth noting......

They could. Whether they choose to or not, that's another thing. Wilco are a lot bigger, not sure how this is even a question. Agree with bartel above..

but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Duh...........just saying..........in fact I watched Richard Thompson and he was great.  But most people did not even enter the venue that I went to until MMJ was playing.
THANKS for the breaking news

Sarcastic breaking news. He's a legend and continually gets overlooked on this tour (as does his legacy overall), partly because of his impossibly early start time.

That's not true, Wilco has played Madison Square Garden before. It was a NYE show and I think The Flaming Lips opened for them. I'm not sure if they've played MSG since but to say they could never play a venue that large is false.

For a long time Wilco was my favorite band. Then I finally started going to MMJ shows and I now have a new number one.

You're right.  It was 12/31/04.  I went to the show.  It was Wilco/Flaming Lips/Sleater-Kinney and was a great show.

I was there too, Bill.  Great shows by all 3 bands.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

I thought people would find this interesting in light of the conversation: How Wilco's Jeff Tweedy learned to grow up and start firing his friends.
Babe, let's get one thing clear, there's much more stardust when you're near.

Look at it this way, if Jimi Hendrix were alive today, he'd still be Dylan's opening act.

Let's not get hysterical here.

With Dylan's tremendous ego and legion of admirers, including Jimi, he'd never be anyone's support act, and you know it (Hendrix is one of my heroes and Dylan is not).

Dylan supported the Grateful Dead in 1995. Sorry, not tryin to piss in your cheerios. I just like to talk music.

that's probably why Bob Weir opened for part of the tour!
