We are interested in giving back in some way to the local community while we are down at OBH. We were excited to see that they are offering the Positive Legacy Day of Service opportunity, but then were a little disappointed once we read the description. Doesn't sound like a whole lot of "service" to us, or at least not what we're looking for. We are considering giving to the donation drive as well, but would still like to do something more personal to help the community. We've googled around and found some local organizations that we might be able to visit and donate to, including the Little Yellow School House (www.littleyellowschoolhouse.org), Friends of Puerto Aventuras (http://www.brisacaribe.com/fopa.htm), and the Akumal library (http://www.travelyucatan.com/akumal_library.php). We're curious to know if anyone else headed to OBH has a similar interest in an alternative "service excursion" or has any thoughts on this?

We're very interested. We have not had time to look at the details. the last Cloud9 excursion we attended we missed out on the Positive Legacy day of service because it sold out so quick. We've been planning for either my wife or I to take our 13 yr old out on the PL day. If there are better options, we're certainly open to ideas. We'll look at the research you've done. Thank you.

I've tried to reach the Little Yellow School House via multiple avenues without any success. Today I looked into the Educentro/Friends of Puerto Aventuras a bit more and I think that looks like an excellent opportunity if they are willing to field visitors. I learned about the organization on TripAdvisor and it sounded like others had visited and taken donations there, so I assume they would be open to us stopping by. From what I understand, they are based in a community in P.A. that houses a lot of local families who work in the tourist industry. The Educentro has enrichment programming for children and adults, such as English classes (before and after school classes for the kids). They also have a library and other various programs to help the community. It looks to be quite close to the resort compared to the other options. I emailed them today and will hopefully hear back regarding whether we can schedule a visit and what kind of materials donations they need. I'll be sure to let you know what they say. Is there a particular day you would prefer to visit if we have options? We have excursions scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday right now, but otherwise are open...

I so appreciate your research. Please keep us posted. And if it helps, we're renting a mini van. As I mentioned before, my wife Shea wants to do something to help the community and take our 13 yr old daughter Hadley. I'm comfortable speaking for Shea in that she would be willing to drive a group.
