don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...

I've got tix for St. Paul on Friday and Moontaxi on Saturday.  I can live with that.  See you there...

A couple people left pretty harsh comments on Forecastle's FB post about the last late night show.  But I agree with them to an extent.  The festival shouldn't have waited so long to announce that anticlimactic late night show.

Caught a Benjamin Booker show last night and GODDAMN this guy is one badass motherfucker! No wonder he got the job opening on Jack White's huge tour -- he's got swagger, and lots of it. Not to be missed at Forecastle, and sure to be an amazing start to the first day of the fest.

Also, Moon Taxi is growing on me big time. I was planning to just go hard during the actual festival and not do any late nights, but I may have to alter that game plan. Seems like they'd deliver an awesome jammin' conclusion to day two.

Can't believe this is less than a month away, I'm pretty fuckin' pumped.

I'm making considerable efforts to arrive in Louisville Thursday night, as its a 7+ hour drive from Iowa City and I don't want to miss Ben Bookers set at 1:45pm on Friday.  Otherwise, I'd have to leave at 6am and head straight to Waterfront Park.  Heard BB on the radio and didn't realize, at first, he was on the Forecastle lineup.

I know nothing of Moon Taxi but have tix for the late night show, so I'll soon find out.

Any of you Louisville residents want to recommend some good places to eat and/or drink over the weekend? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

So glad you asked....

Absolute best food in Louisville = Hammerheads. Its a really, really shitty, 8 foot ceiling, hole in the wall with amazing southern fare. They only serve beer as far as alcohol goes.
Holy Grail... beer snob/bar food heaven. About 20 taps, with really hard-to-find beers. Beautiful beer garden. high-brow bar food (best burger in louisville, but costs 14$). cheese plates, pickle plates, sliders, beer cheese, etc, all great.
Grail House - HG's next door restaurant. Lunch/Brunch 7 days  a week, 10-4. Best brunch food in the city. Biscuits and Duck Gravy . They make their own Sodas, and have great beer as well.
Silver Dollar - This place complete's my trifecta of favorite spots (along with hammerheads and HG). Honky Tonk themed, low brow menu items (not necessarily cheap though), and amazing bourbon selection. GQ's top 10 Whiskey Bars in the nation 2013.

El Camino - Silver Dollar's sister restaurant (same owners), and my place of employment. Tiki bar, authentic mexican food. No chimichangas, no liquid cheese. It's not tex mex, its mexican. I would definitely recommend going at dinner time, as our lunch is a pretty limited menu, and the best part about the place is the tiki cocktails. Its the same price point as the Dollar (9-14$ cocktails) expensive, but worth it. 20-30$ entrees, but you can eat 3 tacos for ~10-12$ also.

Those are my suggestions. There are plenty of other great places closer to Forecastle/Downtown (Proof, Rye, Mayan Cafe, Side Bar, Harvest, Decca) that are all highly recommended as well. To me, high quality drinking is just as important as high quality eating, and Holy Grail cant be beat for beer, and Silver Dollar can't be beat for bourbon (selection or in cocktails), while El Camino can't be beat for Rum/Tequila selection and cocktails.

Just what I was looking for, thanks so much man! This Hammerheads menu looks unreal, I don't think one trip will be enough...

I actually just ate Hammerheads last night, for the billionth time. It's ridiculous. The owners now own 3 restaurants in Louisville, but Hammerheads in the only one of the three that I find to be unreal. The other two arent bad by any means, but just not as good as their first venture.

Mr. Clements!! I just bought two tickets for Moon Taxi.  I'm getting pretty pumped to see these guys.  I noticed on one of their recent sets that they threw a One Big Holiday jam in the middle of Southern Trance.  If they played an MMJ cover at this show I'd go insane.

Anyways, is there a certain song that kills live from them?  I've made a pretty solid Spotify playlist of them.

Also, do they play anything live prior to Cabaret?  Trying to gauge which songs I should focus on, since I have such a limited time until Forecastle to prepare for the live show.

Here's a live version of Southern Trance that has a OBH-esque jam close to the end:

I wonder if they have changed it to sound like OBH recently or if its the same jam that is referred to on this setlist:

I heard from somebody that was at the show they threw in the OBH jam!

The great thing about Moon Taxi is when you see them live, not one song sounds like the album version.  They are truly a band with 2 identities.  There are certain parts of songs they only play live.  Some of my favorite songs live are, "Whiskey Sunset", "Square Circles", "Hypnus", and I really like "Change", and "Suspicious" off the newest record.

They primarily play songs off Cabaret and Mountains Beaches Cities nowadays, however, since the set they're playing is lengthier than normal there will be some fun covers and maybe some cuts off Live Ride added into the mix.  I believe the last time they were in Louisville in February they played 2 songs off Live Ride.

Think there's a good chance to hear the OBH bit at Forecastle?  If they played it in Ohio, surely they'd play it in MMJ's hometown.  Anytime would sound cool covered by them too; it has that right level of energy.

I'm also digging the Pink Floyd and Rage covers.  Blinded By the Light would be cool too.
