On occasion I hit the genius mix in iTunes, where it matches up songs that are in my library. I have almost 800 albums on my computer, so there is a significant range of music styles to pick form. Unfortunately usually the choices are very predictable. If you pick a song from any era it usually chooses songs of similar style in a window of about 5 to ten years. Pick an MMJ song and it is Wilco, DBT, Son Volt, etc, with lots of repetition of same artists. Today I picked a song from a band I feel is very difficult to define style wise. Here is a list of artists picked by Genius for them.
Teenage Fanclub
Gram Parsons
Dead Kennedys
The Beatles
Matthew Sweet
The Clash
Flamin Groovies
Townshend/Lane
The Lemonheads
Big Star
The Byrds
Squeeze
The Who
That is a nice broad range. If anyone thought of New Pornographers, (which would amaze me if anyone did), that is the band the songs by the above listed bands were derived from. If you are not familiar with them, this is pretty good evidence you should check them out.
