Band of Horses at OBH

MMJ612

There seems to be a lot of discussion about War on Drugs and Dr Dog, but less about the Band of Horses.  I, for one, am a huge fan of BOH and am thrilled they will be joining MMJ this year.  I've seen them multiple times, including opening for MMJ at Red Rocks and in Wisconsin with MMJ and Trampled by Turtles.  The one critique I had when they played Red Rocks was that they played a pretty similar set both nights.  So, I'm really excited that they will be adding an acoustic set this time around.  Live at The Ryman has some beautiful songs and hearing Marry song, Funeral, Monsters, No Ones Gonna Love You...etc acoustically will be awesome.  If I don't cry a little during Monsters I'd be surprised

Anyway, it sounds like most folks can't wait for Dr Dog and WOD, but wondering what other thoughts there are on BOH.  I am also curious as to what role they may have played in the event selling out, if any.

PS Lets try to bury these threads that take a nasty turn.  We are My Morning Jacket fans, not Juggalos.

Good idea,  but I'm not going to be nice in my opinion of Band of Bores, Band of Snorlaxes, or MMJ lite. Whatever you want to call them. The best thing about watching their set is that they make MMJ look twenty times better than I already think they are because Band of Bros is so boring. Having said that,  I respect your opinion and anyone else's who likes them. I just think that once is enough to see them for a lifetime, and I'm cursed that the band I follow has them open for them more often than not lately.

What Johnny said. I've tried. I'm not a hater, just not a lot to get excited about.

I really like a lot of their music but the live shows have been a bit underwhelming for me.  Not bad just not great.   I do think the acoustic thing sounds like it might be cool but I may skip the headlining night.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Hoo boy .. this one will definitely get some replies.

I'm a huge fan of Band of Horses, think Ben is brilliant and they're superbly talented. When the MMJ/BOH tour was announced a couple of years ago, I was floored. And yes, I put them at the top of the list in the post-OBH survey for "bands you'd like to see in 2015" (with Alabama Shakes a close second).

But hey, I get it. Not everyone's cup of tea. Same could be said for many bands. You can't rock out to their every song, and if that's your bag, totally understand. I do agree that The Funeral is supremely played out and that's how they're known to many. But there's so much more to BOH ...

So yep, I'm pumped to see them, especially the acoustic sunset show. Has chance to be really cool

Layin low, it looks like there will be plenty of space on the rail for you and I at the BOH shows

I agree that their last two albums were not as strong as their first two.  They are currently recording a new album, and based on the producer they have chosen, it will be more like the first two albums.  I hope they debut some new stuff at OBH.

When BOH opens for MMJ there really is no comparison.  MMJ is soooo much better in concert.  However, I have seen BOH as a headliner and I LOVED this show.  It still didn't compare to a MMJ show, but nothing does.

Strong emotions for BOH.  I'm torn.  While I think their first two albums are outstanding, I am not even the smallest fan of their second two albums.  I've seen them open for MMJ and Pearl Jam a few times and their own show once.  They're not the most exciting but do have a lot of great songs and sound really good live.  Personally, I would prefer something new and different or the War on Drugs to get two slots and BOH one.

Thanks 612 for the intel about the new album and producer.  I'm more interested now.

This just makes me more excited to see BoH.

If they were not on the bill, I wouldn't have even purchased tickets for OBH.

I myself am super excited to be seeing Band of Horses.  I've seen them a few times, the last being their acoustic tour.  I know they will be playing an acoustic set at OBH during sunset.
I've read descriptions of them like Band of snoozes which I personally think is very witty.
With that being said, the eclectic nature of all the bands playing is a reflection of what My Mornig Jacket seems to be about which is embracing all music.

It's interesting you say this, during the spontaneous creation tour, it seemed the majority of the people at the Milwaukee show were there for BOH. After BOH left the stage, a large portion of the crowd did as well. Worked for me as I got to go up to the third row.. Also when I talked to people, most of them said they were BOH fans. But I definitely wouldn't fork over this kind of money just to see BOH. I do really like them. But regardless of the bands accompanying MMJ at OBH, I would be there.

To each their own, and people can hate all they want. But at the end of the day I really think the haters will wind up enjoying their sets.

Agreed!

I'm just really looking forward to seeing my two favorite bands in Mexico.

I've tried getting into BoH soley due to the relationship they share with MMJ. I've done so on multiple occaisions, but I still can't seem to jump onboard. For me, the first time I heard and saw WOD and Dr Dog live, I was totally infatuated with their performance - it was unparallel to the BoH show at Forecastle this year. I don't "hate" them, but they're certainly at the bottom of the list with this year's lineup. That being said, if you mix a beach and a live gig, especially with the likely possibility that Jim and the boys could sit in on a few songs - then hell year, I'm there.

I'm a huge Neil Young fan and I read a while ago that Neil likes Band of Horses.  He heard them in San Francisco years ago...it's one of the reasons I started listening to them.

Snooze Fest.
I'll say it again, Band of Snorlaxes are the band mmj would be if mmj was boring.

pattilovesmmj

Ah...our Jacket...never boring!!!!

Pseudonyms for band names never gets old haha.

Did someone say " Band of Loraxes"[sp]???
Also, there was mention of "My Boring Racket" a long time ago.

Ha, seriously. I don't get this really serious hate BOH gets. I mean they're no means my favorite band. however, when I saw them open for Jacket I thought they were a great band. Their energy is lower than MMJ, but how many other bands can bring what the Jacket does. Still they make some good music.

I like them and am really excited to see both sets of theirs. Their Ryman Acoustic show is awesome. Clearly, Jim and the boys see something in them or they wouldn't have toured with them and brought them here. I have a slight suspicion all the people who hate will enjoy the set. I mean, you're on island time, BOH is perfect for relaxation music.

How many people saw them open for MMJ in an outdoor amphitheatre atmosphere vs. a smaller indoor venue? I saw them at one of each and while I felt they didn't really get the larger, spread out outdoor crowd going, I really enjoyed them when I saw them at the Peabody in St. Louis. Their sound just seemed to fill that space better.

And yes, OBH will be outdoor, but will at least be more intimate than an amphitheater I would think. Maybe that's wrong though.

for sure. i wouldn't be surprised if they don't open for mmi on the supporting tour this year.
