I like that MMJ is varying their supporting acts throughout this tour. There is one band that I am particularly fond of - Floating Action (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPd2L6u6szI) - and I wish I could make it to one of the shows where they are slated to be the opener (highly recommend checking this band out if you are an MMJ fan - Jim is a big supporter of Seth and Floating Action).

I would love some feedback on the other listed openers: Hiss Golden Messenger, Hippo Campus, Lizzo, Lucius, Jason Isbell, Floating Action, Mini Mansions, and Sylvan Esso.

I am particularly interested in input on Sylvan Esso since they are the openers at the Red Rocks show I will be attending. Thanks and long live MMJ! :drum:

Sylvan Esso is one of the only electronic bands that I like.  Coffee is an awesome song!
I wonder why we listen to poets when nobody gives a fuck

Jason Isbell is the greatest songwriter to emerge in the past 15 years. That's not a recommendation, that's just a fact. To see him only play a 40 min opening set is a travesty.

isn't it kinda odd its just one show for him to open too? And I'd take 40 minutes of Isbell over Band of Horses at this point.
Don't you ever turn it off

Agree with Penny - Isbell is great and one of the reasons I am so excited about MPP show.  (That along with the fact it is not a weekday night and won't take me three hours to drive there from the wrong side of DC.)

40 minute set > no set at all from him

Penny - am I correct that I remember your name from checking out DBT TDD board from time to time?

crooney

hiss golden messenger is fantastic.  a new favorite that i know i will follow for a long time.  check out the latest album, lateness of dancers, or poor moon or haw.  all so so good.

will be a perfect opener for the jacket in chicago.  can definitely see jim coming out for a number or two with hgm.

and as previously mentioned, floating action is the bomb.  they were the perfect opener for the jacket the third night at The Cap and all of fa's albums are worth owning.  love that seth and his crew are part of the jacket family.  makes me smile.

all around could not be happier with the opening acts hitting the road with the jacket!!

Unbelievably excited for Floating Action in Milwaukee. They are a perfect example of how you know music comes from some transcendent source, because right when you hear it, it sounds like you've known it all along, which you have...because it's just there "floating" in the invisible matter, waiting to be transcribed...
This is a cool thing to watch:Seth Kaufman solo piano: http://youtu.be/hp2oueHQ8yY

Yeah-I used to be on that forum a lot (www.threedimesdown.com) Not so much in the past couple years. That's a really good and active music forum--lots of good music discussion and info even if you're not a huge DBT fan.

I think that is a different Seth Kaufman (Floating Action dude = Seth Kauffman I believe). But that piano Seth is cool too! Here is a better video with FA Seth playing - he is the one with the red beard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJADLEn2_hQ

MusiKel Mama

Two savant Seth Kaufmans. Weird. I feel so lost inside.

Thank you for clarifying!!! I am obsessed with men with red beards!!! Im pretty sure I was married to a Viking in a past life. Or I really like that comic Hagar the Horrible...

MusiKel Mama

Oh man. Game over. Red beard and funky licks?  :cheesy: :cheesy:

It's weird because at Amazon you have to type in two "ff"s to get Floating Action Seth to show up but when it does, it lists him with only one f.   If you type in only one f, you get piano Seth.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

MusiKel Mama

Which one is the multi-hyphenate instrumentalist?! I think one of them needs to change their name.

I can't wait to see Sylvan Esso again. Red Rocks especially. She killed it at OBHII and has the sickest vibe. I was on another planet during her set in Mexico.

Haha. I am much less familiar with piano Seth, but I do know that Floating Action Seth plays all of his own instruments and vocals when he records albums (for the most part), and he just gets a band on board for the tour. So drums, bass, guitar, percussion, etc. is all Seth himself, which is neat because I feel like Floating Action songs and albums have a lot of depth to them and cover a really broad range of sounds. I agree with Crooney that all of FA's albums are worth owning, but a great one to start with is the self-titled album.

As part of the MMJ family, Seth is also pretty close with Dr. Dog. I think a lot of those semi-East coasters (Louisville is the furthest stretch) have a little love fest going on, which is fun.

a good sampling of hiss golden messenger can be found at a recent benefit show they performed with some friends.  here is a link to a taping.  i'm hoping it's ok to post this.  thanks nyctaper!!!

definitely worth a listen....great setlist...and for a worthy cause!!

I thought Sylvan Esso were great at OBH2, and with Amelia joining the band for a couple of covers on nights 1 & 2.
Cuz it's been so long since someone shattered me.
