Would either of yall mind converting this to .mp3 on the archive?  I hate being that guy, but space and time are limited on my work computer (the only one that hooks up to my iPod).

I'd highly doubt the taper would like for this to happen, just wait a few days, Joe usually offers up the 16 bit source as well.

what he said...
it'd be a bitch to convert these to mp3 by the way... 24 bit would require resampling and Joe will do that, he wouldn't want anyone else resampling his files...

I understand.  Honestly didn't realize it was much more of a process. Thanks for the info and thanks for taping in general.  I have the two Athens shows, the other ones on the archive, and am still enjoying the hell out of them.

Why is this?  I've seen the disclaimers about not converting to mp3 but I thought it was just legal stuff.  Why do tapers not want it converted??

Kory

They probably don't care if you convert straight 16 bit files to mp3 for your personal usage. They don't want them spread rampantly though as it's kinda a taping rule to always trade losslessly. Things are more easlily tracked now as they usually stay digital and more people get their shows from bittorrent and websites.
Back when people did more snail mail trades someone could burn you a disc and it having been from mp3s and you really don't pay much attention and you burn it for your friend who doesn't know much about trading and rips it to their computer and from there burns a cd of the new mp3s to a disc for his sister and so on and so on. That's degradation of data and hence there is a loss of sound quality. That is the short story for why people ask to not convert to mp3.

As far as the 24 bit resampled to 16 bit, I'm not too knowledgable about the process but I think there's a bit of kanoodling around with the sound and stuff and that should be left to the taper or to someone he/she wants to do the resample.

Im not the authority on this subject either, DVD audio is a bit too expensive a pastime for me.  However, I have downloaded a few 24 Bit shows in the past and here's my experience.  If you are OK with listening on your PC, then just get Winamp, and you can play it there.  You can't burn 24 bit to CD however, I just discovered that when I converted the 24Bit Flac files to .aiff on my daughters MacBook, I was able to simply use iTunes and convert to .aac for my ipod.  So I imagine Windows iTunes will too.  If not, I did convert to .aac and for anyone who wants this for their ipod I can help you out so long as you don't circulate it.

Btw, the 24 Bit does sound great, try to keep it in 24 bit if you can, but I can't listen to tunes on my computer 98% of the time, so conversion is necessary. ..

Don Dante

Would you mind giving me some pointers on that, downloading the 24bit and then getting it to .aac for my iPod?  I had to delete my BT program a while back, so please send me the name of the best software to use to get these files and convert.  Would be much appreciated!  Really wanna here this first show in the best sound possible.

All you need is the Bit Torrent Client of your choice, but I use the original available here:
http://www.bittorrent.com/download

This is a big file, over 2 Gbs, beware.

Than to decode the Flac files, just get Flac Front End.
http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

Once the files are decoded and you can drag the files into iTunes, and then hit Advanced and convert to AAC.  Now be advised that when I did it I was on a Mac.  Not 100% sure it'll work on Windows, but I don't see why not.

Don Dante

Great, thanks CT!  I'm gonna give it a shot right now.

Carter,
I didn't see his mics on the 7th. I think he had some trouble with people hitting his stand and didn't really want to deal with it again.
