I like the instrumentation a TON and think it will sound BIIGGG live. But i don't know how to feel about the lyrics, i feel like they made a whole song (very good one) out of a single verse and very similar "chorus".

Also, whenever i was listening to this song over and over- it has grown on me- and once i didn't hit replay fast enough and Youtube automatically played BD right after and i LOVED the way they sounded together

So spending nearly $200 on Roll Call and a Deluxe vinyl package gets me zero early downloads, while spending $11.99 on iTunes gets you two? Trying really hard not to be grumpy about this, and not finding much success.

the frustrating part has to be that all they need to do is give you a code to download the tracks. As much as they are putting into the marketing of this album and all the different packages, that something that simple hasn't been done for the people spending the most money.

Exactly.

I've never been a lyrics guy, at all - or at least, it's very easy for me to overlook lyrics if I enjoy the music.  And I think that's beneficial for me as far as my digging MMJ goes, because I do feel that the past couple albums Jim's lyrical content has maybe taken a bit of a downward turn compared to earlier stuff.  Lots of just repetitive lyrics that don't really feel to go anywhere.

I'm digging it, just wish that guitar solo would have gone for a bit longer...

I remember when Cobra was an outlier in their catalog. I was so excited for the future to think maybe they would explore that sound some more. Now that we have more weird music from them, I want them back in the grain silo. I like it way more than big decisions but its not even close to them at their peak. But people change and Jim isn't making music for people like me who would have gone to the first three terminal five nights if they were in Iceland.

FetusTree

But there used to be an element of heartbreaking vulnerability in their music that is largely seemingly gone now and that sucks. I mean I know moving away was sort of emotional or whatever even though that song  sucks... And thank you too among the worst in their catalog... I don't know I'm sorry to come here and lament and bitch bit I try to bring an open mind to their new music every time and am still disappointed. Its not like the first four albums are gone or negated by the newer shit so I will de commence my whining.

Stevie

Im right there with you Fetus, to an extent.  For me, my favorite part of any jacket show is when Jim gets on after the break and before the encore and plays an acoustic track or two..  Like a bermuda highway or IWBTWYD.  Or even when its the full band and they pull out Butch Cassidy or They Ran or Rollin Back.  Every time MMJ or Jim does something new im always hoping for a return to that sound and more importantly a return to that sort of emotion.  But recently ive come to the conclusion that unless something really bad happens in Jim's life its just not possible.  In simple terms, i think there was probably a lot of heartbreak in Jim's young adulthold.  Now, not so much.  And judging by some of his interviews i really dont think he is interested in reliving those emtions even for creative purposes.  For better or for worse, I think Jim is just too happy to make another At Dawn.

Stevie

By the way, this song is ten times better than big decisions.  Live it will be even better.

I agree with you that the element of heartbreaking vulnerability may not be there, but are you the same person you were in 1999-2005? Jim clearly isn't either and I believe he has come into himself and found confidence/security within himself. It shows in the optimism of his lyrics as of late. While I'm with you that the silo days are what I love most, I really don't want another ISM, nor do I think it will ever happen. I'm excited for all the new ness and for them to keep growing and changing and I'll be along for the ride. Cause at the end of the day, it still sounds uniquely MMJ to me.

Also, Thank You Too is far from their worst track.... Love that track

Yeah and good for him and everything and I'll be at boston calling so if anybody wants to come piss with me while they play big decisions just lmk

FetusTree

No I'm not the same person I was or maybe I am just without quite so much heroin but my music doesn't suck more than it did back then... It is just as crappy as it has always been. Here is Bernie's list of god awful ballsuck mmj songs to piss off you newer fans:

two halves sec walkin look at you wonderful ( been hating that song since 2006) you wanna freak out outta my system touch me pt 1 although part two rules and I will always boogie to it and so does the title track of EU and circuital and slow tune is good shit remnants blows

Basically what you are saying is if he just kept releasing the first 3 albums over and over you would be here bitching just as loud as you are now?

Carry on, I'm enjoying it.

Fetus Tree is angry.

I suppose I might be, too, if I was still on AOL IM.

You know what I was pumped for their artistic leap on Z but if this... And 'this' refers less to Spring Among the Living than Big Decisions... Then yeah give me more Rollin back and fuckin I needed it most and shit. It felt good just then tontype new my morning jacket song titles. I am no longer on aim that was just the way we talked to each other when I joined this forum, when people were complaining about Z. But I can be reached by telegram. And I love this band so much it hurts, but they just hit me because they love me

MOWJO8185

I feel confident based on the first two songs released, plus the live version of Only Memories and the snippets of the others, that this will be my favorite album since Z. Whether it tops any of those early albums remains to be seen, but I'm feeling very optimistic about this one.  LOVING HEARING SOME GUITAR AGAIN! Circuital was definitely lacking on awesome guitar licks.

Good news is, I saw something where a music reviewer wrote that this is their best album since It Still Moves. I know it's going to be killer. I dug Evil Urges and some of Circuital, even though the latter was basically the failed Muppets album. While I don't see this being anything like ISM/At Dawn, I feel were going to have that feeling of progression and artistic leap like we did with Z

So I've been listening to it on repeat and it gets better and better like many a jacket song. And like someone already said, there's a lot going on. Very interesting song that has the potential to be a killer live. I'm not sure if this was already mentioned, but I'm pretty sure I hear Britney from Alabama Shakes at 4:49 singing backup so that's pretty cool.

FetusTree

Hey just bcuz I do thanks for giving me a reason to listen to visions of Johanna again... Have you heard mmjs versions of tonight I want to celebrate or the man in me? Choice material from the past I am living in! However incongruent it might be that you like Johanna and thank you too (with that insufferable exclamation point) man just bcuz I hope you are right... Seeing your reply now that would be way bitchin if this or the next album were better than middling...

POSTSCRIPT: something I sat in slackjawed amazement of before my morning jacket began sorta wiping their ass was how most bands release like thirty five minute albums... But Tenn fire and at dawn and ism are so long that if they had staggered the releasing of their material we would probably be hearing run thru for the first time right now... So they already practically released like six masterpiece albums considering the double size of those CDs and the EPs. I am not bitter I promise or okay maybe I am that fleet foxes released the best mmj album of 2008 but I still love all of you LETS DISH
