Minidisc Recording Question - Is it worth it?

I own a Sony Recording MD Walkman and am wondering if anybody has an opinion or insights on recording a live show with one.  I haven't used it for ages and even then only for listening (pre-iPod days).  As I recall the user menus are somewhat convoluted and terribly maddening.   Plus, I'll have to invest in some sort of microphone for it.  That being said, I wonder whether it's worth (soundwise) my impending frustration and time to bother trying to record a show I will be attending soon...

If any of you technophiles have any insight on the subject please enlighten me.

Here are some of my other ponderings:

For ambient recording where would you situate yourself?
Do I need to be totally discreet i.e., I won't be thrown in the slammer if I get caught, will I?
Do I need to worry about marking each song, or whatever, at the time of recording so that I can "easily" upload it into my iTunes program?
If I lose battery power mid-recording will I lose the whole thing?

I apologize in advance for being an idiot. ;)

sorry for the short answer but you should PM George_Savage ie. Low Dog and direct him to this thread.

He records to minidisc all the time and he's got some very nice tapes out of it for sure!
I don't know much about them beyond that so he can probably answer your tracking/battery failure questions...

Well, you're gonna have to get a really nice pair of mics if you want to record to MD from what I understand. We were looking into getting one many years ago for some video production work and we were told that you lose a lot of frequencies when you record to MD as opposed to DAT or these days, one of those JB3 player/recorders.

So if you're using poor mics and a MD recorder, that lessens the chances of getting a good recording.

Not trying to shit in your cornflakes here, I promise. But chances are, that someone else will be recording the same shows that you would be recording with newer gear.

Right on.  I appreciate your words of wisdom.  I'm far to techy-deficient to make a go of it I suppose.  I guess I'll not bother trying to capture it on tape and hope that it'll show up someplace to grap. I have a feeling it'll be a goodie when it do! I'll bring a camera instead.

Sorry. Didn't mean to completely discourage you, but there's a lot more to it than throwing a couple of mics in the air.  :)
