I have never been to this venue. I am trying to decide between Austin and Grand Prairie, since I don't think I can swing both. I mostly see terrible reviews for Austin Music Hall and mostly good reviews for the venue in Grand Prairie. Does anyone have any opinions on this venue?

Cameron

i was a little bummed to see it was the music hall.  for the larger venues in austin it's my least favorite but if you're closer to the front the sound is good.  i saw mmj last time they played grand prairie and don't remember having thoughts either way about it.  it is a drive out of dallas where the music hall is at least downtown in austin.  and there are 2 shows here.

I'm assuming Austin will be all GA floor and reserved balcony.  GP in 2011 was GA in the front and seats behind that.  All 3!

Yeah I'm not a big fan of the Austin Music Hall as I think the acoustics suck. It's just a big open room with upper level balconies. Either way, two shows in my city.. Sold

Yeah, the 2 shows vs 1 might be what sways me to Austin. Now just to figure out how to squeeze Vegas in

We have been jonesing to come to Austin for a multi-night run of any of the bands we follow, like MMJ, Wilco, Black Crowes, etc.  because we always like to mix some rock n roll in with our vacations to cool cities and places. We don't dig festivals and when most of the bands we dig play Austin, its for ACL.  So I got so excited when I heard about 2 nights indoors in Austin, but EVERYONE is talking about the crappy sound in this venue!  What a bummer.  I can see going there if you live there or close by already, but I just don't know if I wanna build a whole trip around seeing a fave band in a crappy venue.  :undecided:  If we do Austin, we can't do three nights in San Francisco.  If you had to fly to get to the shows and had to pick between Austin and SF on this tour, which would you guys who have seen shows at this venue pick?

I guess we'll just have to come to Austin when we can and not wait any more years for it to coincide with some rock shows.

Well two things to consider. First off, San Francisco is way more expensive to stay in for 3-4 nights than Austin is. Austin is pretty cheap compared to large cities for lodging/food/etc (so that's points for Austin).

Second, two shows in Austin vs three shows in San Fran? (points for San Fran). I can't speak to the sound quality of the venue in San Fran, but out of the mid-large venues in Austin, The Austin Music Hall is my least favorite. It's not horrible, but it's acoustics just suck with how they built the place. Now the last band I saw there was Weezer, and they were having technical problems the whole show, so that made me really not want to go back as the sound was so bad I left after 10 songs (tops).

Both cities are awesome, but sound quality is important to me, so I think I'm gonna have to go to SF.

Thanks for the info, helpful in my decision!  One day we will come to Austin just to hang out, eat and see local music, but not this year.

For the travellers, some points about AMH:

- Sound can actually be good if you get there early and get a good spot in front of mixing desk on the floor (i.e. don't stand under the balcony overhang).  Last show I saw was Jack White, and it sounded great where I was.  Probably has a bit to do with the band's sound people.
- Do not buy balcony tickets.  Apart from average sound, the sightlines are horrible and even giants will struggle to see the stage unless you line up for hours to get in first and near the rail.  It is beyond belief this venue even exists due to this.
- Because of above, you will find a long line of people before doors open.  I'd get there at least 30 minutes before doors (you'll still be a few hundred people back) to have a chance at posters and a half-decent spot on the floor.

I wish bands would just play at the Moody down the road.  Capacity is a bit less, but they could just charge a bit more and nobody would complain.

I bought tickets for Red Rocks when no Texas dates were announced, but I plan on being there for both nights in Austin and the show in GP. Being from the Dallas area, I've been to Verizon many times. It's just a pretty alright venue, nothing spectacular.
It's DON FREAKIN DANTE by My Morning Jacket, just chill the hell out and listen!

Hey everyone, noob here, so apologies for a likely dumb question.

How does the Roll Call pre-sale work for the ATX shows? Thanks

Hoping to get tickets to both shows. I've never seen them before but it's been on my bucketlist for years.

1 - Justbcuzido + 3 both nights
2 - Millerjustin + his little Sis (both nights)
What's in here won't disappear

raheuer

1 - Justbcuzido + 3 both nights
2 - Millerjustin + his little Sis (both nights)
3 - raheuer + girlfriend both nights.

Side note: I now have tickets to see MMJ 3 times this year, how varied can I expect these experiences to be?

Well I expect if you're doing multi night runs, they will be very different shows each night. They have stated they don't plan on doing repeated songs on those multi night runs. For the one nighters I could expect similar sets of mostly the new album. However, you said you're going to Red Rocks and that venue always brings out something special in bands.

Just noticed the F1 festivities start on the 23rd. Should be pretty packed downtown. If you're coming from out of town book a hotel now!

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking about making 'yet' another road trip from San Antonio to see MMJ for a 6 or 7th time.   Not a big fan of Austin music venues and you guys are scaring me about Austin Music Hall.  I saw KOL years ago here and was in the balcony.  Not the greatest standing postion.

Does anyone have experience w 'General Admission VIP Tower'?  I see its $150 but is it worth it?  Thanks
