I have a theory about the hat. We know that Jim had a pretty serious back injury during the recording of The Waterfall. What if his doctor basically said, no more rocking out to hard. So the hat is kind of his guide to say, "If it's falling off it means I'm rocking to hard bending over and jumping around". Cause I can imagine while he's playing he doesn't feel it cause he's on that high of playing, but after it could be really painful to recover. I have noticed recently in all of their performances he has been a lot less mobile.

I'm hoping I am wrong about all of it and it's just his fashion choice for the moment. But it really did seem like his injury was serious.
