Idea for a Roll Call Contest

So after seeing some of the song requests of older and rare MMJ songs that many people have made for this tour, I thought of a cool contest for next years anticipated MMJ tour that potentially we can get the band behind for Roll Call Members:

After next years new MMJ album comes out and a new tour is announced, it would be very cool if Roll Call Members could register for a chance for the following:

1. Two GA tickets to a show of his or her choosing. Transportation/Lodging doesn't have to be included just the show tickets.
2. Opportunity for the contest winner to select 3 songs of that show's set list. This would still let the band choose at least 17 to 18 songs and would give the opportunity to see some rare songs performed.

To take it a step further, we could submit to MMJ management or whomever, 5 songs and out of those MMJ would play 3 of those that they choose. We could even see if the winner would be willing to let the MMJ forum vote on one of the songs so that way the contest winner gets 2 songs and the MMJ forum gets the song voted on most.

Just an idea, something that is inexpensive for the band/management and way to get some rare songs out there and I think it would draw some interest.

Curious what other Roll Call members and fans think of this idea? I know we have some people on here that are very close to the band and potentially could pass this idea along to management.

I've thought about this before myself..  On one hand it's very cool, pretty much the pinnacle of fan interaction with a band short of a fan coming on stage to sing or play.  On the other hand, this is just my personal feeling about it but to me it would take away some of the mystique that goes with a Jacket setlist.  I can't really explain that a whole lot, but it's real...to me at least.  Kind of like how back in the day you could either play a video game as they created it, or you could use game genie and just totally change things to your liking... that latter option always got super old to me and i much preferred the original.

That said, and not to hijack the thread, but Band of Horses did an all-request, super laid back acoustic set at OBH2 and i really really enjoyed that.  It wasn't set up like a normal BOH show, everyone was pretty much in "hanging out" clothes, just sitting around.  If there were to be an MMJ version of that, maybe tickets provided in a similar fashion to the first Waterfall shows at Headliners, i think that would be pretty cool.

Just my two cents, i'm sure many people will be all over this idea

I agree - the acoustic BOH set was very cool, very laidback.
Cuz it's been so long since someone shattered me.

Double cosign. Ben said "We really don't have a setlist, so we're just going to play some stuff and feel free to shout out whatever you want." And he meant it ... evident by me saying "Detlef Schrempf" and him going "Yeah, that sounds good" and then the band diving into it. What an experience that was. Doubt MMJ would do the same but you never know...

Sorry Chifan, I'm not a fan of this idea. I'm content with the band accepting suggestions ala Spontaneous Curation. That's way more than most bands do.

Another reason is there's no guarantee the fan who wins would pick deep cuts that we'd all like. What if they chose Wordless, and I'm Amazed? Nothing against those tunes but it's possible the fan who wins could be going to either their first show or close to it, and doesn't know Wordless is almost always played, and IA is in rotation often as well?

I've seen stuff like this before. I'm a big Springsteen fan, and years ago he started this "stump the band"request thing that has pretty much turned into a nightmare now, especially for people in the pit. It Started out as requests,  and turned into people bringing signs to shows. To the point where he now has a part of the show dedicated to it, collects some, and plays a few. Funny thing is though he almost always  only picks, and plays songs he wanted to anyway! Another thing is I can't tell you how many times I've seen signs for Hungry Heart or Waiting On A Sunny Day. Songs he plays at EVERY show. Or people holding up signs all show long, and sometimes for songs already played!

I realize your suggestion isn't the sign thing but my point is it takes all kinds. Fans can be strange sometimes, and there's no guarantee we'll be happy with how this goes. What started out as a fun, cool idea evolved into a nightmare.  It could be worse than what we have now. Can you imagine the posts, and bellyaching if whoever wins picks hits instead of deep cuts?

My last, and probably most important reason for not really liking this type of thing is this is infringing on the band's expertise IMO. It's their craft, their art, and something I think they do pretty darn well. I'm not artistic in any way but sure can appreciate it, and would never in any way think I could do it better than them or any other musician/artist. Even for a couple of songs.

Let's be happy with Spontaneous Curation. If there's some tunes people really want then let's do something as a Roll Call to make that happen. How about pick a show, make a poll with say 10 tunes, and a cut off time to vote. Whatever wins the Roll Callers all band together, and flood Spontaneous Curation with that one request. SC is great but when the vote is split it hurts everyone's chances of getting songs they want,IMO.

Just my .02

Edit to say: now if the band tried something like Steely Dan has done where they do an Internet request night, I'd be all over it.  they let you know what night that show will be, and after you buy your tix, you're sent a list of 30 or so songs where you can pick 20. They tally all the request, and the top 20+ get played. That would work for me provided MMJ has a wide list of tunes to pick from, and hopefully more than 30.

Eric makes many good points. If an asshole like me won something like that, you'd have to endure stuff like Good Morning Dove, Hard Helmet, Holy, Octoplasm, Lil Billy, Isobella with the White Umbrella, and other such nonsense. Ain't nobody got time for that!

An all-request show like Steely Dan, Wilco, and others have done would be fantastic.

Pearl Jam had some sort of contest a few years ago where the winner got to write the setlist.  He then got to sit with Eddie Vedder to edit it a little, but basically it was his choices that they played that night.

Definitely some interesting feedback that I can respect. It was just a thought and I wanted to gauge what other fans thought as well.
Let me clear up a few things, I definitely was wary when coming up with this idea that it would be infringing too much on the "art" of creating a set list for MMJ. I guess I lean more towards how interactive the band is with it's fans and this would be a one time deal as well.
We do run the risk of the winner picking songs that the band would normally play anyways but at least one song voted on by the board would probably be a rarity.

In my mind I can see next years tour pulling out some older songs and thrown into the rotation and who the hell am I kidding, I'll be going to 5+ shows next year too hopefully so its all good.
I just really want to hear them play "Come Closer" live! haha

Hey man, it's all good.  nothing wrong with some suggestions, and starting a great discussion. I'm not saying I'm in the right here either, just my take.

I believe Edison failed 2,000 times before succeeding with his lightbulb. Maybe if we keep this thread alive, one great, workable idea will pop up that everyone including the band likes.

Here's hoping you get your "Come Closer". Make sure to post what shows you're going to, and I'll be sure to cast a Spontaneous Curation request for it.

Appreciate it, yeah I might be waiting until next year as I've gone to 5 shows this year so far...still holding out hope for another one this year but we'll see.

HEY I wanna Come Closer too! So everybody, if you have the time after posting for your own shows, post for #MMJMagna and post Come Closer, How Could I Know, How Do You Know, They Ran, Masterplan, Cobra and Steam and I will die a happy man if I hear two of those :)

Come Closer, like CHIMMJFAN, is my ultimate. That and Oxen...of course, as you can see, ive only been to 1 show, so there's a lot of mine that are ultimates: I still haven't gotten a Dondante or a Steam yet, but alas: because ive only been to one show.

Yeah a night or rarities would be a dream! Can you imagine starting the show with "Weeks go by" then into "Into the Woods" ....etc
