Whoa,  "Easy Morning Rebel" -- VERY different on this new mix! New intro, some piano I've never heard before and WAY more definition on the horns. Very nice!

Easy Morning Rebel was a song I HATED when I first had ISM as an 8th grader in 2004...I hated it...always skipped it...then, in 2007 or 2008 i heard a bootleg with Jacket playing it with the Dearland Horns (I think, could've been another section) and it knocked me out...and as time has passed, it's become one of my very favorite live songs.

That first mix did that song no favors, it seemed, in comparison to live versions, to have no umph, no groove......  very intrigued to hear this new mix !!!!!

Great Jim interview.  Here's a good bit...

STEREOGUM: Where did the name It Still Moves come from?

JAMES: It's just a feeling of something still moving you after all these years. Something that still moves you when you hear it, like listening to an old Willie Nelson song. And then I also wound up thinking about photographs, still-motion...something that's still or seemingly not doing very much can still move you. I think about that in nature a lot. Looking at a flower or a tree or whatever. I feel like the world gets so consumed and gobbled up by action, and the pace of life is so frantic, and people feel like in order to move somebody you have to do something shocking or violent or something insane and fast. I was just thinking a lot about how sometimes the most moving things are completely still or seemingly very simple.

STEREOGUM: Originally there was talk about the potential for a quick followup, a companion piece for MMJ's last album, The Waterfall: something dancier, more electronic, but rooted in the same sessions. Has that plan been abandoned now?

JAMES: Yeah, for the time being. There are a couple of those songs that are going to find their way into the world in the next span of time on soundtracks, or Record Store Day, things like that. As an entire companion record...there's still a lot of songs that haven't been used, but for now I'm moving onto something else.

Does anyone know who is playing the the spanish classical guitar on En La Ceremony? I am amazed by this beautiful tune. I understand Carl studied classical guitar in college, but he wouldn't have been with them during this recording, would he? Simply beautiful.

dogwoody

My god, I just can't get over En La Ceremony. I wish there were a word stronger than "incredible" to describe this band.

I will be needing jaw surgery to repair the fact that it has detached from my head and has fallen to the floor.

I was thinking that I had read that Carl had added some classical guitar to that track.

Didn't all the songs get redone by current band members? If so, it very could be Carl.

The top link pretty much nails how I feel about this reissue.  I think they tweaked it enough to make it just a little more accessible and clearer, but it still maintains all the otherworldiness that gave the original its charm and power.  This will likely be the version I go to when I want to listen to ISM.  Jim did a great great job.

The Pancakes and Whiskey review had this gem which without resorting to much hyperbole shows me that the reviewer must have had a little too much pancakes and whiskey before writing: "Nor did I think that any part of it screamed unfinished. In fact, before the release of last year's The Waterfall, I would have told you that it is their best album. (The Waterfall is their masterpiece, no ifs, ands, or buts.) "

I'm not a Waterfall fan. Even for those here that are is there anyone that even thinks its a top-3 album?

It Still Moves
At Dawn
Z

The Waterfall
Tennessee Fire

Circuital
Evil Urges

I don't think it's near their best album, but I do really really love it. And moreover, I can see where, in a career retrospective, The Waterfall is the most "all-encompassing MMJ album", in that it captures the spirit of both old-school, rocking MMJ and the post-Z MMJ. I think other albums capture specific versions of MMJ much better, but I don't think there is a single album that shows all sides of MMJ, and yet still feels like a cohesive album and keeps up the quality throughout all songs quite like The Waterfall.

Your rankings are exactly like mine.

That placement is totally reasonable. Everyone has their albums that they like more than most fans. I'm sure there are Pearl Jam fans that think Riot Act or the self-titled album are top-4. I'm sure there are Stones fans that think Bridges to Babylon or Voodoo Lounge are vastly underrated. But to call any of the above albums (or The Waterfall) the artist's best in INSANE.

By the way the deluxe edition is available on Spotify (free).

En La Ceremony is such a ride....what a fantastic production...That's Too Bad isn't really some mysterious WANNA HEAR IT SO BAD track..once you hear it, you kinda get why it was shuffled aside, but still a good song and glad to have it.
