OBH4 Thoughts

So I'm starting this thread based on this comment from dss on the 1st Bank Center (Colorado) NYE Run Rumor thread - I noticed that thread kinda got overtaken by OBH4 talk, so let's have that conversation here instead.

Here's dss' comment:

Really hoping they don't move OBH to the Barcelo. It's gigantic (I saw the inaugural phish fest there). The food is just awful, and the "special" experience about being in a buyout style environment does not translate since there are thousands of people having vacations, weddings, etc... The OBH crew will just be another large group at the place. Also, the stage was in a proper "venue" so you needed to actually get scanned into the venue and (depending on your building) it was a significant distance to go to/from to your room. Just nowhere close to being in the concert courtyard at Riviera Maya. Plus, at least for other events, the capacity was closer to 7k for the show, which just sucked compared to the roughly 2k for OBH's so far.

That all being said, I did some poking around and I don't see any obvious holds at the Hard Rock in the DR, nor does the Barcelo have "inflated rates" over those dates. But the Hard Rock Riviera Maya does have five events clearly being held. 3 Back to Back events in late Jan (similar to Zac Brown->OBH->Avetts) from last year, but moved up a few days so there is no event over the Super Bowl weekend. And another two events in March, one of which would be Panic in La Playa). Cloup9 did four events at the Riviera Maya last year, so unless they are adding two new events AND moving OBH to Barcelo, there is a shot we might be heading back to the Riviera Maya. Coming from the West coast, I really hope that is true. The DR sucks to get to from the West Coast and I think many of us let Cloud9 hear that in our feedback forms. Whatever and wherever it is, I just hope it is actually happening.

As for announcement timing, last year, they did a "save the date" in March (likely due to no OBH in 2016 and increased competition from phish and CID Productions who also announced early) with the actual announcement on 5/24. OBH 2 was announced the second week of June with no "save the date" so hopefully we will hear something in the next couple of weeks.

I agree with a couple of things in his post - namely that the Barcelo resort is huge and not ideal for a OBH type event (in my opinion).  Having to ride busses from one end of the resort to the other is not my idea of fun.  Also, coming from the West Coast as well, I really hope OBH isn't moved to the Dominican Republic.  That is a truly long day of travel from the left coast, especially compared with the very centrally located Rivieria Maya.

So here's to hoping we hear something about OBH4 soon.  And I'm hoping to see y'all down at the Hard Rock RM concert pavilion sometime late January 2018!!

Yes, after originally thinking I wanted a different venue and or destination after OBH 1, I changed my thought after OBH 2.   The Hard Rock has the system down and you can find good food, in my opinion.  Many people are starting to get familiar with the Cancun / Tulum area as well.  This is perfect for those looking to stay extra days and unwind in a relaxing atmosphere without having to go far.

The intimacy of these shows and the environment created by the group having full takeover of the resort is what makes OBH really special.   If the Barcelo rumors are true, it almost makes it a non-starter for us.  I'd hate to miss out, but it just wouldn't be the same and probably not worth it.

For me, Barcelo and the DR puts me in the same boat, very regrettably.  Especially the flying time from the West Coast.

At this point, I'm guessing the details for the next OBH, and probably for the next 3 OBHs, are already signed, sealed & delivered (being that it's been posted that the original run of OBHs were a 3 year contract).

Now it's just a waiting game.

I'm starting to align with this thinking - I've been to all 3 OBH events and part of me wants a change just for the sake of recapturing the "newness" and excitement of OBH1, which was literally electric feeling.  However, the other options aren't that great and I really want to keep this thing at the approx. 3,000 person cap it's at right now.  (1,700 ppl first year undersold, 2,500 at OBH2 sold out and I'm guessing about 3,000 at OBH3 with triple rooms added)

I knew the first year didn't sell out and the other years did, but it didn't realize it was that far away from a sell out in year 1.  It really feel that much more crowded in year two with the additional 800 people.   So if they can sneak in another 500 people and it still won't feel too packed (the resort, restaurants, and shows), then that would make a lot of people happy. 

I heard about the Barceló event from my friend who went to Phish.  That concept is not nearly as appealing to me either.  I could get behind the newness of the DR if it's all MMJ people and not too huge, which I don't think it can be since MMJ isn't as huge as Phish.

i've been to OBH2 and 3, and i can't imagine a more perfect place than the HRHRM.  maybe there are places that would be just as good, but they'd be hard-pressed to find anything better, top to bottom.

me too, as I'd like my first OBH to be somewhere that other Jacket fans have been to before and can recommend the best places to eat, things to do, time to do them etc.
Also, can anything beat three MMJ 2 hour + shows in an intimate setting in a courtyard, 20 seconds away from your rooms???

The Hard Rock Riveria Maya calendar is blocked out for five 4 night chunks in Jan/Feb/March.  This very likely means 4-5 music festivals at HRRM.  I have a hard time believing OBH4 will not be one of these festivals. 

The official One Big Holiday Facebook and Twitter account is getting more active, which means we will likely get an announcement in the next 3-4 weeks.

just general rumblings and logistical speculation given the NYE run that's about to be announced - seems unlikely that they would try to promote and sell both events at the same time.  But who knows?  just take my money!!

and it's not terrible long term strategy to skip a year now and then. I mean, they completely sold it out after taking a year off after not selling it out the first two years right?

i wouldn't mind them switching off between NYE 3night runs and OBH every year. For me personally it'd be hard to swing both within 2 months of each other.

yea, i had it mixed up in that OBH2 did sell out but had lower capacity than OBH3.  Still think it's a viable long term strategy to take a year off now and then to not make it so predictable that people go "I can just go next year when they have it again"

I haven't been yet, but hope to make it once the kids are old enough to stay with someone else for a week or old enough to travel with to a resort (got a 2 month old and a 2 year old).

i sympathize with you Parkervb, i haven't been yet either :( you seem to be the biggest fan on here who HASN'T been to an OBH.
