Thought about when this was first done etc so I thought why not write a history of it?
Here we go with all or some of the answers

That Red Rocks 2012 War>IWSYS is pure bliss. Good write up Lonn.

It's more like a Dark Star > Dew to me. I think the only time I saw this was MPP 2012. I loved War and Picture of You back to back when they did TTF, but I don't think they really segued that.

Yes War can go into a lot of things, which is why the band experimented with order etc.
But "War Begun" into "I Will Sing You Songs" is eternal.

they should start fixing "Steam Engine" into "Where To Begin"

Lonn, if you get a chance check out The Bear > Steam from Red Rocks 2011. Pretty tasty!

Yeah it would be cool if they did more of  the epic > ballad/slow song segue that the Dead were famous for. I Think I'm Going to Hell out of Dondante, Rollin Back out of Run Thru like on the album, etc.

It's like how they'd do Wharf Rat out of Terrapin or something too. They did Wharf Rat coming out of a lotta big jam songs during the second set. Jacket have an infinite amount of those type of comedown songs to make even more moving when coming out of something so epic.

Bear and Steam together has some history hasn't it been done more than just RR2011? wasn't it Steam into Bear at Forecastle 2012?

Yup Wharf Rat, Stella Blue, China Doll, etc. The closers of the 2 Waterfall LPs probably work in that slot too.

I think Steam>The First Time belong together. that NYE '17 show pairing them was just utterly perfect

I'm too lazy to run the stats, but they separated the songs for a bit in 2017 and then again (obviously) at OBH4 - then they was like peas and carrots again in 2019.
