I rarely listen to any MMJ (or pearl jam for that matter) unless its a live recording. Thus far I've only downloaded shows I've been to, shows that really stick out to me (NYE 08, Bonnaroo 08, Lebowski Fest 04 - thanks to mr.yak), and  just a few others. Got any recommendations on other recordings? edit: I wanna base this on set list, covers, and QUALITY. it'll be hard to beat NYE 08, i know)
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...

My favorite might be the Planetarium in Louisville in 01.  It's vintage MMJ and it's legendary. The recording clips a bit but it doesn't change the fact that the show is just straight amazing!!!!!!!
p.s. It's best to turn the lights down and try and create a planatarium type vibe in your house while you listen.   :)

"This show was fabulous! If you're a fan of the two discs released thus far by
My Morning Jacket (Darla) but you haven't had the opportunity to see them live....
MAKE IT HAPPEN! You absolutely must experience the energy pouring off these guys
live! I won't say it's totally different than the albums but the live show seems
to have some kind of magical force surrounding it. I have seen them play live a
few times and they have a wonderful way of building tension around the music.
The songs are built up in a very deliberate way that makes it absolutely delicious.
For me, it's not just "the way that he sings"; it's the way they make me wait for
it! The crescendo. It makes you feel that if they stopped at a critical point, you
might just die...or burst!
The light show was cool too. It was the only thing that kept me from getting up and
dancing in the darkened aisles. I am a strong supporter of local and national talent
and I go out to see many bands, lots of different genres. It seems like that would
make it easy for me to describe this band live for you. But that's impossible. This
group defies description; they can't be classified into any genre. They are unlike
any band I've ever seen. You simply must see My Morning Jacket LIVE!

J."

Bonnaroo 06 is also awesome.

I have the perfect spot for this.  I rennovated our attic into a playroom for my girls and we plastered the cieling with glow in the dark stars so they could camp out in the winter up there.  I'll have to try giving the Planetarium show a listen up in our attic/planetarium.  8-)

I do agree that live MMJ is much better to listen to.  Seeing as I've only been to one Jacket show in my life (and I have yet to find a recording of that show anywhere) I just look for good reviews of shows on internet archive and if the sound quality is decent, I download it.  I also look for shows with a good Phone Went West as well.    8-)

i was at columbus and want a recording badly. you should download the nashville show from the same tour. same entrance, same covers, friends again, nearly same set list. you would like it as a substitute for columbus.

Bonnaroo 2004 by far. My recording. After it was over I escaped into a dirty stinky nasty fucking porta potty to keep my gear from getting anymore fucked up. No telling how long I was in there but I was not coming out until the storm stopped. I think myself and Joe Waldron who was on my stand were the only ones who hung on until the end. I saw a few mic stands go flying at which point I held on to mine for dear life. One of the best shows I have ever seen and in contention for one of the best shows by any band of the aughts. It had that special something and always takes me back to the time and place. What an adventure it all can be. As a matter of fact I even listened to this again yesterday.

I was blown away by that story. Also, hearing Stevieray and TC talk about it is crazy. (and i think that woodduck was there, too)...The most infamous taping around.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Yes, Yes, I've probably listened to the Bonnaroo 04 (Return To Thunderdome) recording more than any other bootleg.  It's been a while, I need to dig it out.  If I could go back in time and go to any MMJ show that I missed it would either be this one or the planitarium.  Great Story!!!

I mean obviously you can just buy the Okonokos DVD and CD set and that's an awesome recording and the DVD is amazing to watch after a few beers with some friends. If you're looking for a heavy setlist they really rocked the Canal Club 1.24.04. It's great quality and they really jam on some of the songs. I found that on the Steam Engine. I love The Bunbury Theatre recording from 1999, its the first listed (by date) on the archive site. The transition from At Dawn to Heartbreakin' Man is awesome. Those are a couple of my suggestions.
and if all else fails, i'll come running back, wonderin where you went
with my heart.

Setlists aside, which taping do you guys believe is the perfect marriage between sound quality and performance? I have very, very few MMJ live shows (only two -- Bonnaroo 2004 and a video from 2001) and I'm looking to cram one more smokin' show onto my iPod.

Just dusted off my copy.  A short, festival setlist, but great diversity of tunes, awesome energy from the band and audience, and solid sound quality.  I'm giving this to my wife to listen to as part of gearing her up for the Portland show.  Epic Steam Engine with pounding rain!  At Dawn with THUNDER!  Cobra!  O is the One!  Dancefloors!  PWW!

It may not be the best, but its currently top in my mind.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.
