The Boar

Tomorrow I'll be joining a bunch of pals in a time-honored Midwestern/Southern tradition of going to the lake. As it is April, and still pretty cold, I doubt we'll go in or on the water -- we'll just stick to lying in the sun and drinking cheap, cold beer.

Perhaps in an attempt to warm up the temperature of everyone a bit, I have constructed my 2005 MMJ Lake Mix CD that is as follows:

1. Mahgeeta
2. One Big Holiday
3. Golden
4. The Bear
5. Lowdown
6. The Way that He Sings
7. Sweetheart
8. Just Because I Do
9. X-Mas Curtain
10. Death is the Easy Way
11. Evelyn is Not Real
12. Phone Went West
13. Run Thru
14. I Will Sing You Songs

Remember this is a playlist that is made A) for people that don't know MMJ and B) by a dude that doesn't have the Early Recordings (yet, I swear). So I tried to go for songs that weren't too sad or too weird or too long, etc., and that have a bit of the country-fried feeling about them. You know, happy and sleepy stuff for the lake. What do you think? Any suggestions?

I think You MUST have Steam Engine on there.
There's Still Time.........

That's a good entry-level compilation.  I used to get frustrated when my buddies didn't "get" MMJ at the start.  MMJ is like all good bands though--it might take a few listens to get it, but the payoff can be unbelievable.  Hopefully your buddies will see the magic in that compilation.  Have fun at the lake dude.

The Boar

Thankee. And 'board, I have indeed added Steam Engine.  ;)

EC

That's pretty good Boar.  I did one a while back.  Maybe I should do one for my neighbour...  Anyhow, the other one was:
1.  At Dawn
2.  Mahgeetah
3.  The Way that he Sings
4.  Lowdown
5.  Hopefully
6.  Bermuda Highway
7.  Phone Went West
8.  Come Closer
9.  Evelyn Is Not Real
10. Golden
11. The Bear
12. Tonite I Want to Celebrate With You
13. O Is The One That is Real
14. Nashville to Kentucky
15. Strangulation!
16. X-mas Curtain (jazzy version from Christmas)

Huh.  I don't have Steam Engine on there.  hm.  That's dumb.

Oh yeah - have fun on your weekend, Boar!  I love weekends like that.

The Boar

Thanks EC.  :)

Oh, "Come Closer" -- that is a good one. I'm gonna have to make sure I can fit all of this on one CD though. Hmmmm.

EC

Aint nothin' wrong with two!!

"So I tried to go for songs that weren't too sad or too weird or too long, etc..."

Just at quick glance they all fit one or more of these criteria...especially -

Phone Went West
I Will Sing You Songs
Evelyn Is Not Real
Death Is The Easy Way
Run Thru

But I think your friends will like it...I gave my buddy a "Sampler" disc of the following...

One Big Holiday
The Bear
They Ran
At Dawn
Rocket Man
Evelyn Is Not Real
If It Smashes Down
O Is The One That Is Real
Masterplan
Run Thru
Phone Went West
Strangulation
Bermuda Highway
I Will Sing You Songs
Mother

And he was hooked after one listen...now his favorite is "New Morning"...go figure

Also IMO Steam Engine and One In The Same are musts!!

tomEisenbraun

what are "Mother" and "New Morning" from? Is that the Pink Floyd cover?
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

PhOneWentDead

"New Morning" is a Nick Cave (Australia?) cover - I had never heard of it either...was on "We Wish You a Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year" EP

"Mother" - Yes Floyd cover...was on "Little Darla Has A Treat For You" CD
