darkglow

no.. the backup copy is the same.. i have a copy of the promo cd and it's the exact same as the original except the option to copy the disc is grayed out

Dee.

I personally don't own any copy-protected cds, but it disappointed me to see that Z would be one.

tomEisenbraun

riny? any clue if we'll be able to import to iTunes?

Quotewhats copy controlled mean?

Means you can't burn copies of it,or in the case of Z ,you can only burn one copy...the copy you burn is also protected.

I HATE Copy protection.
I don't think anyone should tell me how and where i can listen to my music...
I bought the newest Frank Black CD recently and it won't play in the cd player in my VW Golf. but every other CD i own does.  It sucks
Hopefully Z won't be like that.
I can always find a way around the protection and make a copy that will play everywhere, but i shouldn't have to.  I bought the album its mine to do with as i like...

I'm sure you've read up on DMCA and all that, the reason behind copy protected CD's, so I won't bore you.

The fact is that this debate has been around since the dawn of P2P networks.  I find it amazing it took this long for this to reach the board here, but I guess since this is the first MMJ cd to have protection so that brings the "debate" up again.

I'm not sure what exactly to say about it;  I'm all about live music trading, which isn't burdened with protection (if band approved), but I've got some mixed feelings about copyright protection per se.  I can't decide if "owning" a CD means I can do whatever with it-including offering it up to trade with 100000000 other folks.

Just because the world does it, doesn't mean it's right.  Feel free to flame away, I'm just on the fence about this.

honeycomb was copy controlled? really?

I guess with this issue, I think about tapes.  Mixed tapes in particular.  I loved them.  They held a very special place for most of the beginnings (and endings) of relationships.  Or new friends.

That part stinks.

And it's kind of like saying "We don't trust you, so we're just gonna make sure you won't do it."  But the problem is that people (sometimes honest people) get fucked if the cds can't play on their various media forms.

tomEisenbraun

i think the concept is good, but maybe they should find a way that you can import it onto your computer as a protected file, like the Protected AAC files you get when you buy music from the iTunes store. I'm sure they could work that out. It just sucks, because my stereo consists of me plugging my computer into my Dad's 30 year old Pioneer receiver and speakers, so it sounds great, it's just that this kind of CD won't let me do that.

I think the big question is, what kind of sacrifice do you want to make?

Do you want to let it not be protected, like almost every other cd, allow people to make mixtapes and burn illegit copies for eachother so as to turn people onto the band and promote sales, if the numbers of the promotion are not insanely great.

Or do you want to prevent this type of trading, turn people off, because they can't play it in their computers, or even in some cars. It's a format that needs a lot more research and practice before it will really be actually useful, because right now, it really is just a nuisance. True, it may be the "better" option, so as to prevent online trading, but the true fans out there, and the number is steadily growing with each show with Wilco, with every bonnaroo performance, every appearance on Conan, with each amazingly kickass show that someone goes to with their friend. People are getting turned on. They may still be a little underground, and thats not a bad thing. People know about them, you just have to know where to look.

And here's a new debate. I was thinking yesterday, I hope MMJ never contributes a track to the OC, not because I want to keep them in my pocket, but because the popularity will take a turn for the worse. If people find it "cool" to like them and go get Z and are enthralled, and then pick up the earlier stuff and it's waaay to country or classic rock or southern rock for them and they just like the new stuff, the fan base will begin to suck. I don't know, I think the fact that they are making low-key appearances in interesting places is giving them a little shove, it's helping us fans to be able to spread the word.

"What was that kickass song in that Coors commercial?"

I guess, it boils down to the fact that I don't think the copy protection is necessary. It is nice to know that you are safeguarded against the perils of the internet, but I think that too much worry in that aspect could give a nod to the wrong direction. I will respect their decision, though, as I think we all should. It's their music, to do what they want with. I think we should respect them enough not to file-host on Kazaa or whatever in the first place, anyways.

(people keep mentioning OC, and I have to admit once again that I don't know what that means.  Damnit.  What does it mean?)

In lieu or my ignorance, I will offer suggestions:

Octopus Club
Orange Car
Oregano Curry (wait, I said oregano for something once - did somebody already tell me what it was and I've forgotten?)
Ox Cluck
Ogre Creon
Ozzy Crew
Orchestral Clutch
Ono Confusion
Offered Confession

Operating Crush

Olive Cacaphony

Ohio Cellophane

stop.

I think that the P2Pers will find a way around the copy protection and the honest people won't.  That's what I think sucks about it.  Oh and yeah the mix CD thing.  Oh and the making copies so you don't have to be uptight about scratching your CD.  Oh and everything else about it.

btw, now I'm REALLY glad that I got the "leaked" mp3s, because I can use those to make mixes and everything else.  Further proving my point: the more honest you are, the more you are going to get screwed by copy-protection policies.

I think it's a TV show. I think it stands for Orange County. I think  :-/

Ugh.  This entire post was wrong.

What I meant to say was that aMillionDreams is almost on the dodgeball team.

Whoops, posted before I saw that.  Thanks, doctor.

(Orange County like the movie?  Like, perhaps the worst movie ever made aside from Spanglish?  I. do. not. understand. tv.)

OC is a horrible teenage soap opera along the lines of Beverly Hills 90210.  It sucks almost as bad as copy-protected CDs.
