I think it would help if MMJ cut out the live recording tapers, yes i will admit I do like some of the recordings but when you allow the tapers you are one step closer to becoming a jam band! I would like to think MMJ is not and will never be a damn jam band! Keep away hippies!

You should never trust a hippie or a jamband for that matter.

have you ever been on indietorrents or even dimeadozen?  sure, the dead and phish are utterly immortalized for their taping, but nearly all bands of all styles allow it today.  sorry, but this is just one of the most fucking stupid bits of logic ive ever heard.  a jamband is defined by their sound, not their taping policy.  how much of a fan can you be if you dont want the band to be cool and allow taping?  should they do a drug test for everyone who walks in the door because someone might be high?  there better be no drinking either because then theyd just be a stupid 'southern-fried' band.

sorry, but this sort of logic cracks me the fuck up.

I dunno man.  I knew a guy who taped a motley crue show once and then, *bam*, it was tye-dye city for him. :)

it still moves was a very jambandish album.  a lot of extended solos at the end of the songs.  but a true jam band is defined by their live show, not their albums.  and mmj jacket is NOT a jamband.  they rip right through their set w/ little improv and small amounts of extended jamming (except on a few songs).  also, i didnt see a lot of hippies at the shows if been to, except bonnaroo of course and try not seeing a hippy there.  but you have to respect jam bands for their ability to improvise and their musicianship.  if you dont, then you havnt listened to many jam bands.

Jamband, southern fried, who the hell cares. MMJ has a unique sound all to their own.  Why is everyone so concerned with labels?

and as far as their taping policy goes, i think it's a blessing.
Hold my life until I'm ready to use it

i killed a hippie near Reno...just to watch him die.

I wish MMJ were a jam band, but I'm afraid they are nothing like it.

All their instrumental breaks are written and orchestrated. ISM does not have a single improvised guitar solo and there is nothing on the album that could be called a jam.

In fact, when the guys tried to improvise during the end of Steam Engine at Bonnaroo 2004 they fell down badly. They do not have the skills to be an improvised music band.

they don't have the skills?  are you kidding me?  have you seen them live?  i think they choose not to be "jam band" b/c they just don't want to be and they are amazing being just who they are!!!

go listen to phish or widespread man...if you can't appreciate the Jacket for what and who they are!

jim jams, tom jams, carl jams, bo jams, patrick jams, the jacket, as a whole, do jam. does that make them a jam band? do they go on long, meandering segues on the way to a big, rock 'n roll finish? yep! why would you rip a band for being of the jam variety? what, exactly, is the stigma here? is it the patchouli smell? is it the jelly sandals? the hemp peruvian sweater? if you dig it, it's good!
everything sucks. really.

i wish they were the next Grateful Dead..

who are the beatles? are they new? didn't they open for franz ferdinand?

when i worked at a record store this hirl came up to pay for the libertines' second cd and i said "you know, if you like the libertines, you should check out the re-issue of the clash's london calling with the vanilla tapes" and she says "i've never heard of them". swear on my mama... i almost swallowed my pen. i think i sputtered something like "oh, well, you should check them out, they're really good." it was a moment frozen in time...  :o :o :o :o

Logically speaking, there are many bands who allow taping , for example, Weezer,  Ryan Adams, The Flaming Lips and Tenacious D all allow taping. I hardly think that any of them can be tagged with the label of a jam band or artist. I really doubt that this band wants to be tagged as such either but we have been able to enjoy nearly every live show from this band's history because of this generous policy. I, for one, am deeply grateful!

Another thing that amazes me about this band is the fan base itself. There are so many people who have come to love the Jacket who might not share musical tastes at all, except for MMJ. I am always amazed at the the age ranges and different looks that people have at these shows...their music transcends labels!

Cheers~
