I'm just not crazy about Evil Urges. I've listened to it several times, and it just doesn't grab me like their others do. It does have its moments, Sec Walkin, Touch Me Part 2, Thank You, are some of my favorites. I just believe that it lacks as a whole compared to their previous efforts. It picks up momentum and lets me down. Just my opinion, still can't wait to see them for the first time at Red Rocks though, I know that will be amazing.

it kind of reminds me of another my morning jacket record...  different then before, a little rockin, a little soulful weirdness, plus some new stuff (omnichord).  in the long run, if they hopefully make another few albums it will probably make more sense.   I get what you're saying about it getting really slow feeling in the middle.  the album feels extremely long to me.   I don't dislike the songs persay or anything, it just feels like a long listen.  Z was like 10 compact tracks and they were kind of in the same color area... evil urges seems more multi-colored.

the beginning 3-4 songs remind me of a style of tension and release.  they build you up to a peak. then drop you back down and turns you introspective for a while, but slowly and subtly up until finally "look at you". then it feels like it peaks up at smoking from shootin and I always feel like that's the end of the album but then TMIGTS pt2 comes on and it's back to outerspace where the first track evil urges started.  so in a way it does go full circle.  is completely successful?  who knows.  I think if they weren't under time constraints of 12pm to 12am or whatever it could have been better but at the same time I have faith they did the absolute best they could with the time they were given.  it seems like they've been trying to vocalize very clearly this was a completely different atmosphere recording and basically like work more then lazing about starring at the stars.

i'd say thats a fair assesment.  this album just has a mood i'm not crazy for, makes me too anxious, and impatient or something.

agreed. seeing these songs played live makes a lot more sense out of the whole album -- they fit in real naturally with Z and the live standards from ISM and AD

Hey there's nothing wrong with saying you're not crazy about the new album, esp. if you've been listening to 'em for a while and have other albums to compare it to.  Personally, I've been listening to MMJ since 2002 and they have been one of my favorite 2 or 3 bands for the past 5 years; however I'm not in love with the new album.  Don't get me wrong, it's better than most of the crap out there, and I love the last 4 songs on the album (not counting Good Intentions), and I especially love Touch Me Pt2, but overall it's my least favorite album of theirs.  At Dawn will always be one of my favorite albums by any band ever, obviously I love pretty much their entire catalog, yet this new album will not go down as one of my favorites.  But I still love this band, and in many ways feel they do very few things wrong.  I admire them a great deal for changing it up with each album, and they certainly did it with this one.  We'll have to see what the next one brings.  And, yes I'm sure the songs on this album sound great live, and I look forward to hearing them in that form.
yeah, so if it's sad, well you still gotta live till ya die

Honest Man

Good Intentions is by far the most amazing song not only on this album, but throughout their entire catalog.
The fact that my hearts beating, is all the proof you need.

DaFunkyPrecedent

anxious is a good way of putting it.

While it has some of my favorite MMJ songs of all time, it is my least favorite ALBUM as a whole.
God damn those shaky knees.

I must say that, in my opinion, the new album isn't as great as previous efforts. I love that they have mixed things up and experimented a bit more on this album, its just the some of the songs aren't up to scratch. I actually think the album would have been better if they had trimmed a few songs off it. The middle section, with tracks like Librarian and Two Halves could have been sacrificed in my opinion (Or released as a seperate EP). A bit of quality control. 'Z' is so great because it doesn't drift, it just packs a punch and then its gone. I would agree that the Evil Urges tracks work alot better live. I like 'Highly Suspicious' on the record, but I loved it live.

Having said that, I also respect the boys for doing what the hell they like. It's like a long term strategy that reminds me of Wilco or even Neil Young. The idea being, if you don't like this one that's O.K, we have another record out soon.
